completely agree tbh. punchout is certainly not meant to be offensive, the stereotypes are used in a lighthearted way and turns what would normally be a dumb thoughtless stereotype into a genuine, fun character, not meant to literally represent every person in their respective state, but with the state of the internet, youre often encouraged to actively "seek out" things and percieve them in an offensive way, "they have been sensationalized to get people outraged" is a very clever wording. its quite unfortunate, at least with every dead game series there comes a bunch of inspired games like pizza tower with warioland

If we can't get a new entry, I'd at least like to see Wii get remastered for Switch.

I feel like the reason we might not see another Punch Out game in my opinion isn’t because of its “offensive stereotypes” to me its more “where do you take the series from here”, because it feels like the game on the Wii is the most polished and refined gameplay wise out of all the games in the series that it’s like what could we add to keep it interesting? Best I could see them doing is putting punch out for the Wii on NSO if they make a Wii equivalent player on the switch. As much as the series does use a lot of national stereotypes for its characters that at first glance seems very iffy, if maybe not a little offensive, it does subvert the stereotypes in several respects (I.E. as much as Glass Joe is a weak French man, he never gave up or surrendered like the French is made out to be) or at least doesn’t vilify the boxers for having them and instead adds to their personalities. Gaijin Goombah made a really good video on the subject that goes into a lot more depth and Nintendo has been improving on how they depict the nationalities of the fighters, even if it isn’t perfect, but to be fair nothing regarding this kind of this is gonna be perfect. At the very least, they aren’t trying to erase the game or hide the characters Ala song of the south style, like they didn’t remove the spirit fighters of the boxers from smash ultimate or anything, and if they were going to make a new punch out game, I have a feeling they will be very careful on how to approach it while still trying to make it fun and have personality, Nintendo at large doesn’t follow gaming trends for the most part but they are being mindful on how they go about things and becoming progressive in a slow gradual way. But that’s just my 2 cents on the matter, sorry for the long essay

If they are gonna make another Punch-Out game, they should at least bring back some of the characters who only had one appearance in the series. Kid Quick, Pizza Pasta, 9 of the 16 opponents in Super Punch-Out (SNES), and Disco Kid.

Ordinarily I would say "There's no way Nintendo would let backlash get in the way of their games" Then I remembered them removing the feather from G&W's Forward Smash, and now I have to agree. I miss when games were separate from reality, now they have to cater to the beliefs of the general public or else they'll make little to no money due to bad publicity, at least, that's what the big companies like Nintendo, Xbox, SEGA, and Sony believe.

As a new PO fan. I think I get it that the reason we won't get another PO games might because of it's offensive stereotypes being presented in the series. But I feel like there's a chance that it's still possible for a new PO game being made even with the stereotypes (but in this case, they probably slightly toned down the stereotypes) (Take street fighters or any fighting games for example)

Having owned ARMS I can definitely tell you that you’re right it doesn’t quite play like Punch Out because it has many types of customization options for the boxing gloves you could use with your player character as well as the home stages for each character is more dynamic with obstacles and power ups and more movement to go around your opponent than a simple boxing ring for all of them, and that you could choose one of the 15 characters in that game vs being Little Mac all the time. Not to mention the game has multiplayer modes that allow you team up and fight against others

Well Mike Tyson said they will make another punch out game. But I don’t know if it’s going to be another punch out, probably a remaster of the Wii, or a new story to the game but we’ll have to see by the time the switch 2 is released.

In my opinion, the idea that Punch Out is offensive is blown way out of proportion. Vodka Drunkenski and Bob Charlie doing a shuck and jive in Super Punch Out are the only legitimately problematic bits of characterisation, one of which was quickly addressed with the pivot to Soda Popinski. The way I see it, if you’re a smaller Nintendo series, you need somebody to champion you at the company to see any sort of ongoing development. Pikmin has Miyamoto, Metroid has Sakamoto, Kid Icarus had Sakurai until he dipped. The Wii Punch Out only got made because the team at Next Level Games explicitly requested the opportunity to work on the series.

You know what I wanna see? I wanna see a women's boxing reboot of Punch-Out. Our main character is Margaret Rivera, a.k.a. Lil' Maggie, a Little Mac fangirl since childhood. Now that she's grown up, she's gunning for the top just like him. One of the characters we fight here, I imagine, would be a woman who's a yamato nadeshiko in daily life (look it up) and releases her bottled-up anger via boxing. :)

It's kinda sad how we haven't gotten an entry in the series considering the deep roots punchout has with Nintendo. It's a unique but simple game that you can make alternatives to, but can never replace.

I have to disagree with your reasoning, as there are plenty of games out there even now with stereotypes such as Metal Wolf Chaos, that are beloved because of their exaggerated depection. What is a likely issue is that punch out is a niche franchise, beloved by its fans, but not moving units like other Nintendo mainstays, suffering the likes of other fanchises like Kid Icuris, lacking mainstream demand to push for a new title.

As someone going into the games industry, I feel a bigger reason is that Nintendo doesn't think Punch out would be profitable enough. Nintendo, like most game companies, is trying max out profitability, thus, they only invest in very strong titles like mario, zelda, etc. I mean a lot of franchises are being ignored that DON'T have offensive stereotypes like starfox and f-0-, yet games like Zelda, which has frequently and repeatedly been criticized for taking from cultures and designing characters offensively get a free pass. It's not about offensiveness, nintendo doesn't give a shit about that, most companies, especially in japan, don't, it's about what can be most easily marketed and sold to the most consumers. Thus, widely beloved, pg games like mario and zelda can do whatever while punch out gets thrown out. Plus the gaming market (At least for triple a titles) nowadays is geared towards open world adventures and huge stories, often with decision based gameplay. It's what the market finds trendy and pushes on to the consumers. Punch out is a mechanics driven game that has little story and only one playable setting. It's a formula that isn''t the current and thus not profitable enough to invest in. So what would make nintendo make a new punch out game? Market incentive. Either more consumers demand a punch otu game or the formula punch out is based on gets popular again.

Nice to hear your voice btw, friend. And I also agree, albeit there is another reason people often forget: Punch-Out is also not very popular in Japan itself... at all. Not to say they hate it though! Just doing a bit of research, when Little Mac was announced for Smash 4, most Japanese fans had never even heard of him, or thought he was an obscure pick for the game due to being only popular in other countries; kinda like how we think of how we think of Fire Emblem, and the initial inclusions of Marth and Roy in Melee. So I don't think it's only due to being potentially offensive to newer audiences. I think it's also that Nintendo HQ in Japan simply don't think of it very often. It's worth noting that even latest installment on the Wii wasn't even made in Japan, but by a Canadian studio! (yes, they went to the effort to include Bear Hugger and update his personality, so they're in on all the laughs) I think it's Nintendo of America (or Canada) who will have to take the reigns of the series to make it their own. (Sorry for wall-of-text)

I think that punch out has always had this architype, With Nintendo making characters such as Mario(fat Italian mascot) and Kirby most of the time, The fact these characters exist at all is a miracle. Another thing, Nintendo loves to experiment, that's what the Wii and switch are. motion controls jank revolutionized gaming and is the first domino to making VR. If they draw the line at a verry popular and marketable series for being "offensive" then guess I'm wrong. Even then they can always create an entirely new cast of characters and maybe shine a light on pizza pasta from, the arcade games. Overall, I don't think a game with this much of a following is getting discontinued.

Punch Out really isn't offensive. Every character is wacky and stereotypical, but it really doesnt matter. People hyperinflate how "cancel culture" is. People get cancelled for real reasons now, not for saying a light-hearted joke. Maybe if it was 2020, I'd understand, but it's 2024. Nobody overreacts like they used to, except a VERY SMALL minority. And people (mostly conservatives) massively blow the proportions of that minority out of proportion. There isnt a new Punch Out game because... Well, what are they gonna do? Wii was already the perfect Punch Out game. They should just release Wii on Switch and call it a day, no need for a new game. Would i like one? Of course Does the franchise need one? No, not at all

TL;DR - If Nintendo tried to make a new Punch Out game today in the 2020s, they'd immediately get attacked by cancel culture, which could cause the game to have terrible sales, thus killing off the franchise for good, since companies don't want to associate with properties that end up being a financial liability for them.
