why we oil bearings, and what happens when we don't

Governor bearing caps on the black 102 that seem to have not ever been oiled since the 30's. Freeing the tiny ball bearings inside is part of servicing these motors. The bearings must have freedom to move, and be properly lubricated.

Thanks for all these videos. I used kroil to loosen and that worked. I’m a beginner and wouldn’t have even known it was there. Victoria ix

Thanks for the tip about using the torch to get the bearings out. They are such a pain.

The torch is the last option, first just tap the cap onto a soft cloth and see if they just fall out. Sometimes they will be that easy, next is soak in solvent. Put them in a plastic pill jar or something similar that can seal up, and then shake the jar. Most of the time that will do it, especially if they are the larger ball bearings. Heat is the last resort, everything has failed, even weeks of soaking in everything from PB blaster, Evaporust, even white gas. Because this 102's motor hadn't been taken care of even when still in service the bearings rust locked into the caps. If it had been oiled regularly then there would only be old oil shellac to dissolve. That can be a pain, but in time the bearings would come out with solvent. That is one criticism on the 102's design, they should have made it possible to oil the bearings from the top without removing the entire motorboard.. This would still not get the gears greased up, but the governor bearings need oiling much more frequently than the gears need greasing.

Taping them didn’t’t work.

Most of the problem is the crap lubricant HMV seemed to be using at the time. I rarely run into Victor bearings stuck this badly. I don't think I have ever had to resort to such measures with a Victor bearing cap. Fire up the torch, remember the solvents you are working with are flammable, and so will be the hot ball bearing once it hits the rag, so dampen the rag. Be careful.
