This crosses into the tube rolling lane a bit, but more so for those who want to immediately swap out vacuum tubes in a new tube audio component. Our recommendation is: don't.

Well done, again Lou! I've done exactly as you've instructed with Rogue Audio! I will only deal with them! Most recently replaced my 3 year old tubes with updates and they were also an upgrade. Really happy with the amp, their service - consultation, and most importantly, my music!

I also believe that manufacturers have more to risk in terms of reputation when selling spare tubes. If they started to sell bad ones, well, the sales of their products would likely take a hit. Those who just peddle tubes, well, until their reputation would catch up to them, the market is wide open. These days, folks selling unworthy goods just shut down the business name and create a new one.

Tip for tubes .............in the past I always bought quads or sets with an extra spare one.......saved me sometimes problems when one tube failed .... For saving tubes ( especuialy expensive or rare tubes -nos ) I do preheaat the filaments before applying high voltage and I shut down the power supply before shutting down the filaments to bleed the storaage uin the capacitors ............this way I have tubes that last for decades and still perform great , some sound even better than when new...... A differnece between many older nos tubes and current production.........the latter sounds high fidelity performing for the first hunderds hours then when the youth is gone one feelds the need of replacing them..............many nolder nos tubes continu to sing even when the youth has gone...the difference between great sound and good music .....the brain versus the soul......... In a sain society the elderly have stil their place to live and share their experience or tell their story , in modern society they are doomed to end their live in homes waiting to die, forgotten by their children. Music is a timeless vibration of emoptions for the human soul...........a sharing and vibrant connection to the soul of something that has no relation to the time........

What a delightful contribution to the channel. Well done, sir, well done. Thank you for taking the time to both give advise, provide insight as to vintage vs modern tubes and then to finish it with an understanding of how important music is to mankind. It is, in fact, the one true event that is present in every significant part of our life from birth, graduations, marriage, children, and our funeral that is present.

I have had a number of tube amps and preamps over the years and used a lot of aftermarket replacements. I would say it depends on the brand if it is successful. In gear from ARC and McIntosh I have had the best reliability replacing tired ones with ones from Audio Research or McIntosh. On a Mac putting expensive NOS does not do much, their use of auto former and their voicing tries to conserve its in house sound. Zesto I was directed to go to their supplier but did not need to buy direct from them, just use the same source. With products from Sonic Frontiers, BAT, and Prima Luna I could get away with quality tube from a reputable reseller. Although on BAT power amps it is best to stick with tubes obtained from BAT, I could roll on the preamps to pretty much any make. Stay away from volume resellers with prices that are too good to be true, Amazon and e-Bay.

Chinese tubes look nice . I have heard some tend to be highly microphonic which is what put me off buying a tube amp from there.

I am not exactly sure of what quality is coming out of China these days in tubes. They seem to be selling tube products. I don't know much about their longevity either and perhaps some folks can speak about that. I too remain distant from their tubes for durability reasons.

@@audibleeleganceinc Agree with you on this topic ..... Using tubes for almost 7 decades I stick to my own stock of nos tubes ever since, no copies or whatever current ( often doubtfull ) production ... .....I solved several of these problems you mentionned like in the case of the P100 from Bill Beard using two KT88 GEC( genuine UK ) , no tube could hold it without failure ( 100 watts with a single pair of KT88 ) ........the solution was at that time when the GEC became obsolete to instaal the pre yougo war KT99 EI .........a sturdy tube capable to do the job ..... Thanks for the upload .

@@frankgeeraerts6243 Thank you for your contribution to this channel. Here in the States the willingness to do things on the cheap without thinking is, unfortunately, common. They learn, ultimately. Please subscribe to the channel and tell others about my work.

"Better" is not why one tube rolls. Different sound characteristics and experimentation is the joy of trying different tubes.

Well, it's a hobby, is it not? Thank you for your contributing your opinion about this and, from my perspective, I try to remain faithful to the design specs, parameters, and longevity. But, there's always room for play as long as you are careful about the longevity side.
