No, there is no confusions at all. She doesn't know how to use this book. All that stops at lesson 76. Those little symbols help the child to remember the rules so they can read and write. If you read the first part of the book before the lessons start (and I mean ACTUALLY read all of it) it will explain the method and even teach you how to use this book properly.

Good video. I would like to share my perspective. My sister-in-law, a very successful home-schooler of eight children, used a more traditional approach with a different program, but similar to the one you used. She had the financial resources, patience and time for that type of instruction. I needed something simple, smaller, cheaper and quicker! And I suppose I like new and different things so it was intriguing to me when I came across the 100 lessons book! (What??! Really?) So I used this book 30 years ago and it worked so well. I was working full-time, and needed to have fast progress with each session, with a sense of completion by the end of “100 easy lessons”! My kids read real books, their own books, at 4 and 5, after finishing this. At the beginning I did have to help them sit still, not ask questions, focus… and follow instructions to the T. But then it’s for such a short time for each lesson. The 100 easy lessons book teaches the parent how to do those things, and emphasizes keeping the lesson to under 10 minutes, one lesson at a time, and to NOT EXPLAIN why the orthography is different, just do what it tells you to do. I didn’t have the extra pink stuff in my version of the book- the parent instructions were all separate. And it changes to regular orthography in later lessons. I found it easy and very effective to just closely follow the very specific and simple, straightforward instructions.

Honestly I don’t remember details exactly but she might have used Writing Road to Reading, Hooked on Phonics, McGuffey’s Eclectic Readers, or more likely a combination of all of those and more. I do remember that she drew from many resources for all of her schooling. She still has all or most of her materials and loves to help others with their home schooling quest, even though her youngest has just graduated from university. As for what books my kids read, we had very many books from picture books to chapter books and were frequent visitors to our local library for them to find more books. They all read prolifically, whatever was of interest to them. We read aloud together, all kinds of books from The Hungry Caterpillar to the Bible to Tolkien. (I guess you get the point!) 😃 They started loving books long before they learned to read. They loved to be read to, to talk about the pictures and tell their own stories.

I am using the ordinary parents guide to teaching reading. My son is 4.5 and tested on a first grade level with reading. We're on lesson 75. We started just before he turned 3. For most of that time we did one lesson a week. After he recently tested at a first grade level and told me I was taking too long we started doing one lesson a day. I was nervous about that because I wondered how he'd remember all of that but he's doing fine. He's flying through now. Even when it's kind of tough he catches on quickly and rolls with it. And we're not awesome. Totally ordinary...

I did! My daughter is super picky about what literature we use and I felt it was safer to try to isolate the different strands of language arts rather than buy an all-in-one LA program. But I hear LOE is great!

We started with level 1. She's now about to finish level 3, and I'll continue with 4. So she'll have done all the levels except Pre Reader.

We used the 100 lessons book and Hooked On Phonics

This really made me laugh!! I love that you've done all this sleuthing! You must have a lot of time on your hands. I actually have used the book - from start to finish. My mother also used the book with my brothers and I as students. So yeah. I'm QUITE familiar with the program, how it works, and the research behind it. I also know that every kid is different, and not all students will respond to any resource or curricula the same way, regardless of how well-designed said resource is. I still think that Teach Your Child in 100 can work beautifully for a lot of kids and families. It just didn't work for my little over-thinker. We are now wrapping up the final level in All About Reading and I have ZERO regrets about switching over. AAR has given my kid such a solid foundation in reading, vocabulary, spelling, literary devices, and grammar in a way this book never could. Everyone has to find what works for them. I'm curious... It looks like Hooked On Phonics teaches the content of the first 2 levels of AAR... Does it go further than that?

@@OdetoAbode They have it up to Second Grade which is level 8. I recommended it to another homeschooler and she's now using it with her Kindergartener and he's already doing the Grade 1 level and doing very well with it. She's got 3 kids so she'll be using it with all of them because it's so simple to implement.
