Like most homebrewers, I started my brewventure with bubbler airlocks - liquid valves filled with sanitizer or vodka. I was tired of topping them up, checking liquid levels, etc. One day, I came across a website selling “breathable” silicone bungs. I bought one. You can buy one here: amzn.to/3bYxUhP
I once aged a blackberry merlot under one for three years. It worked perfectly. Now I can't stop using them!

Great idea for a carboy. I still do my fermentation in a 6 gallon bucket. I have used plastic food wrap for 5 years now, I just use 5 layer of wrap in a star pattern and carefully push the wrap down into the bucket. When it is fermenting, the plastic wrap is pushed up into a bubble on top of the bucket. Now that is impressive and you know without a doubt your yeast are working pretty hard.

I normally just ran some tubing from an airlock or bung to a mason jar of water, but as you probably know this can get a little funky as long time passes. So, thanks for this - a solid clean investment. For those interested, as of the date of this post, they go for 12.99 from the link listed in the description.

One guy I met recommended filling the airlock with Vegetable glycerin as it never dries out.

I almost exclusively use S shaped air locks. Because other types are unavailable for me. I just ordered a few of those three piece air locks on Aliexpress, just curious to see how they work.

Love your jingle. So it seems the only reason to go with these is the amount of product being done. You mentioned having this on for three years. After fermentation why would you do that?

do these work well with 1 gallon glass carboys? I've seen mixed reviews on that, with some stating that they pop out easily.

1 gallon carboys normally use a size 6, I'm only seeing these in size 7 or 10. I have tried using other size 7 bungs meant for regular airlock but it doesn't go well. I mostly make 1 gallon batches as well, but I can't find them in the smaller size.

Well, I tried it and have to say... slippery when wet. I was able to get the airlock on and deep as presented in the video, however the next morning when I checked on the brews. The silicone airlock had popped off. Took me by surprise and I popped it back on dry and I found that it was much harder to get the airlock back in to the initial depth I had it in. But my only suggestion is that don’t put it in when the silicone is wet.

I just bought a few of the 2 piece ones, after seeing this video. They are the same ones you show here. I'm a bit concerned in that they seem to let air in as well as out. Specifically, there is a seam under the flap which prevents a proper seal. Is this normal? Does it pose an issue? Thank you for the great content!

@@MrPenroy I sliced off the excess silicone with a razor blade, and only use them for relatively short term storage or during active fermentation.

How are you getting the bungs so far into the Carboy mouth? Mine only go halfway at most.

you have to really push on that bunghole to force it in, perhaps using some lube would help

No, but we usually ferment open (paper towel rubber-banded over the carboy neck) the first few days of fermentation while it is most aggressive. Been doing that for many years now. In the couple of times I've had foam sputter through it, it's done a good job of trapping it mostly. A quick swirl in sanitizer and it's ready to pop back on.
