Don't just go to pharmacy school because you don't feel like you're cut out to be a doctor, you have to be very disciplined and have a lot of passion for hard sciences like organic chem/biochem etc., the reason I want to be a pharmacist is because I want to specialize in something like oncology or immunology and bring something special to the table and hopefully contribute to public health

I was pre-med and switched to pharmacy also. I noticed that I am still stuck between the two, and I heard that if you want to succeed in medicine, you have to have no doubts in your mind. So I decided that medicine is not for me, and I enjoy chemistry and biochemistry and the pharmaceutical side better, so I chose pharmacy.

I think, to a point, we all considered becoming physicians. Who wouldn't?! There's a certain glamour and prestige to obtaining a MD or DO that our society overly puts on medicine. But, there's a lot of risk to going into medicine and it really is NOT for everyone. I found nursing while working in a hospital and fell in love. It has afforded me a wonderful job and a career that I can build upon at each step. (Meaning that I have a well paying bachelors degree and I can go back to school later on, if I choose so.) Allied health care -outside of medicine- is very much developing professionally and becoming better understood/appreciated.

yea pharm is cool until you can't find a job after pharmacy school because of the influx of pharm students. over 80% acceptance rate nationwide. you'll end up at a part time floater position and then your hours slowly getting cut and salary too....only to see your job being replaced by fresh pharm grads who will work for even less. every pharm student/graduate always think that they will be at the top of their niche but to get to that level, it takes years of work. i think pharm is ever so more dangerous to go into now. it's not worth the debt.

First and foremost I want to applaud you, Kevin, for giving back and volunteering. However, there is a lot things in the video that I disagree with and feel are quite inaccurate. 1. Reasons stated in the video that would preclude one from going to med school. Talk about "generalities" and extremes when several of you mentioned doctors being on call and working 24-7. You guys are using surgeons as the norm, who also train for 12 years, make close to a million dollars, yeah they work a ton. How about the majority of general practice doctors, urgent care doctors, dermatologists, neurologists, and other doctors who work M-F 9-5 and are closed 12-1pm for lunch, off every weekend???? Have you tried getting a refill or clarification on an rx from an MD on saturday or after hours? How about the answering services that most doctors have for after hours? It's like me saying don't work as inpatient pharmacist because you have to work grave yard... Or me saying most pharmacists work weekends and work till 9pm in retail.... Again generalities.. A lot of people go into pharmacy nowadays bc it's the least competitive admission. A lot of newer schools will admit student with gpa in lower 3.0's, without an admission exam, and without a bachelors degree. Unfortunately, a lot of newer students have no idea what pharmacy is and go into for the wrong reasons. 2. The notion that the current pharmacist saturation won't affect me, and the notion that if you are the best you can create a spot for yourself anywhere. I will give this a pass bc maybe this student was brainwashed by a pharmacy professor or a dean who just wanted her tuition money. As a pharmacist, this maybe the most myopic, ignorant, and stupidest statement that i heard, and i will explain why... First, pharmacists are a community, a fraternity, and you are doing as well as how your colleagues are doing, i will elaborate. Look around you, 2 of the three people in your class will end up in retail. They will be looking for chains for jobs when they graduate. With the saturation, most chains now offer ONLY 24 hours of guaranteed hours per week, and most jobs are now in undesirable living locations. Your professors are teaching you information for the jobs that DO NOT exists. Sorry to burst your bubble. They are employed by the school and have their salaries paid by your tuition. Put down your stethoscope, most jobs are in retail (close to 70%). Odds are your will be a retail pharmacist. differentiating yourself in retail is very difficult, some pharmacists are a bit faster and have better communication skills. That's about it. Most chains value pharmacists who are good little puppets, don't complain about working in shitty conditions, and stay quiet. You can maybe differentiate yourself by becoming a transplant pharmacist, and look for a organ transplant institution. good luck. 3. A retail pharmacy job is easy. Make sure correct pills in the correct bottle, and pt knows how to take them. What makes the job difficult is the short staffing and metrics that chains implement. If you had ample technician help who will do the register, fill rx, adjudicate insurance problems, the job is a cake walk. We can't be replaced by a machine bc if something goes wrong, they need someone to blame, which is a licensed pharmacist. Point is: keep it real and think about your profession as a whole. Don't listed to biased professors who proly never held a real job in their lives.

Tim Kirk I have to agree with you. I am only a pharm tech and ALL my PharmD managers tell me not to go into pharmacy. They say if you are going to do 4 years might as well do MD. Pharmacists don't only count pills but there aren't many who say they haven't considered being an MD

I enrolled in medical school 🏫 and started doing MBBS till I finished first year and was ready to go to second year until I came to learn about good things I can do in pharmacy which is also a medical field . I have interest to do clinical immunology and studying pharmacy can let you have a much more stronger foundation than medicine. So , I am graduating from pharmacy school in 2022 and will have residency before going for postgraduate studies in Immunology. Another course I also thought of after pharmacy is oncology

I've been in your shoes before, I totally know what it's like. I eventually changed to study psychology after studying biomed for 1.5 years simply because biomed had nothing to offer except depression and bad grades. At least in psychology I got to understand myself and other people a bit better. Additionally it's also a useful degree to complement many other professions down the line. Currently, I've received a conditional offer to study Pharmacy at UoA so hopefully that will turn out to be a full offer soon. I chose Pharmacy over other science related professions for many reasons: 1) It's closely related to Biology, 2) You work closely with people 3) Offers good work-life balance compared to other health professions and at the same time 4) job satisfaction is amazing 5) great job opportunities in New Zealand and 6) pay is decent. What more could I ask for? Regarding other "science jobs" there are heaps of jobs that are heavily science based but not so much health related. For example engineering, computer science, food science, geography etc. Regarding clinical jobs possible options are optometry, audiology, nursing or even clinical psychology. I'm not sure where you live so job opportunities/pay may differ. Even now I'm still "searching" for my "passion" too. Just hoping that I'd find something that will just so called "light my fire" instantly. Soon I realised that it's just a wrong way to approach it. You really gotta sit down, evaluate your strengthes and weakness, your likings and dislikings and your priorities. Also, ignore those snobs who look down upon all other health professions and are simply studying medicine because it has more prestige. Those will most likely be the same people who will eventually contribute to the staggering number of depressed and suicidal doctors around the world. You need to tailor your job to suit yourself, fuck what others think. Personally for me, I like working with people, I prefer a good work-life balance. I'm interested in biology, job satisfaction and job opportunities are important to me and the pay isn't so much. So yes, pharmacy seems ideal to me right now. However, I still don't really know if it will become my "passion". This is why I really liked what one of the guys said in the video, "passion is cultivated". I guess it's like a seed that you have to plant and water daily for it to flourish. Good luck with finding your "passion", heres just my 2 cents. A random guy on the internet.

I'm a pharmacy tech now, ive been one for my entire undergrad and I'm sorry to say this. Pharmacy is 4 years, and so is Med school. Every tech I know which is 21 techs that were also techs with me and are now p1 and p2 tell me they went to pharmacy as a second option for Med school. It is what it is. Let's be honest here, pharmacy isn't very competitive and you can get a contract in ur last year from any retail pharmacy. So pharmacy is appealing because it is easier to get into than medical school. Because answer this honestly, why be a pharmD when medical school is the same amount of years? Say what u want about residency but at the end of 4 years you are an MD. Loans will be taken for pharmD and MD. Other people that I know that are pharmacists now did the 6 year program from high school. I don't know any pharmD that 'wanted' to go into pharmacy originally and never gave MD a thought...sorry just being honest

Don't underestimate med residency. It's the hardest part of the curriculum and it isn't part of the "4 years". Also, most med students are looking to specialize, which adds a few more years of training.

Only four years for medicine!!? Where I live medicine is 6 years and then you can specialise after the 6 years to be a gp : it takes 4 years of training consultant..: 6-12 years for pharmacy : 5 year in college and then u can specialise in industry/community/hospital and for every school it costs around the same , 3000 euro is the average for students who live in Ireland both pharm and med but for international students : 18k a year for pharmacy and 35k a year for medicine

Well I want to be a doctor,Ob/gyn. I got accepted twice for med school but I cannot afford it which is sad. Student loan will only fund one third of the tuition. So yes pharmacy is the 2nd option which is less expensive by far in my country. I hope i like it. I believe pharmacists are just as important as doctors. Doctors diagnose, pharmacists dispense the meds. They help to save lives. We need them both for success in the health sector.

Pari A I knew I could get into med school if I wanted.. but I chose pharmacy because the role pharmacist's have in a healthcare setting is tremendous. A majority of medical conditions require medications and we need drug experts like pharmacist's to ensure that quality care is provided and to help reduce medication errors which has had harmful effects on over 1.5 million Americans. Pharmacist's will help solve the incredibly high healthcare expenditure costs in America especially with the shortage of physicians.
