Let's ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto

From the end of the Heian period (794~1185) to the Kamakura period (1185~1333), there was a popular dance among the nobles and powerful samurai that were done by women called
白拍子 Shirabyoshi.
The origin of this dance is believed to be the dances of the 巫女 Miko Shinto maidens who danced as an offering or prayer to the gods. Shirabyoshi wore the common fashion (hat, clothes, hakama) of the noble men at the time and even had a 太刀 Tachi katana on their waist.
Why did these women wear men’s clothes to dance? There are many different theories, but this is my opinion…
Because of its original culture, dancing was considered to be something that only women do. However, the end of the Heian period to the Kamakura period is exactly when the samurai started to gain power and rule Japan. In order for the dancers to be in favor of the powerful men who won their authority with military force, Shirabyoshi dressed as men with katana to further entertain the warriors.
Famous women in history such as 祇王 Gio, who was loved by 平清盛 Taira-no-Kyomori (who built the age of samurai) and 静御前 Shizuka-gozen, who was 源義経 Minamoto Yoshitsune’s lover were all said to be Shirabyoshi too.

I like the mix of masculine and feminine for different types of people you discuss...it's cool how those lines get blurred and how different humans saw the same things differently in Japanese culture vs the Eurocentric one I grew up in.

I think Shinomori Aoshi's swords technique is based from Shirabyoshi, albeit he using two swords as opposed to one katana.
