The Fifth Estate

Жыл бұрын

Amid the ongoing fight to protect British Columbia’s forests, The Fifth Estate investigates how the province has become a leading exporter of wood pellets that are burned to fuel energy needs in the U.K., Japan and South Korea. The industry is billed as “green” and “renewable,” but many scientists disagree and activists say Canada has made a mistake in supporting the industry.

I live on Vancouver Island, it was a life long dream. What I didn't realize was how the island was 90+% owned by logging companies. 😳 There are large steel gates everywhere to keep people out of the woods. The logging companies don't want citizens to see the devastation happening before our eyes. Trees are left by the roads we are allowed to drive, so it looks pretty good until you fly over the island and see how much it's been scalped!

I live in northern BC, and the government has totally sold out the province. The trucks leave this area by the hundreds, every day of the year,,,the clear-cut areas are horrendous, and no local forest industry is left, from the strong forest economy that used to flourish here. As well, the wildlife has vanished,,,its a crime.

I am in no way here to promote the practices of these companies . Although in regards to the slash piles I am strictly assuming that there are there left to dry out. Dried materials are easier to chip and lower moisture levels means less water weight to transport , which makes them more economical viable. There is even evidence of such practices, in previous clips you can see them processing slash piles, and the landscape has is covered in regrowth something that would take a handful of years. Other then that great presentation really brought forward problematic issues within our global energy system.

@@wildtwindad you obviously haven't grown much weed (hemp) You are lucky to grow one crop a year outdoors in Canada. Like corn, hemp is a heavy feeder and is always grown with some form of fertilizer. Other amendments, such as lime are necessary to grow hemp . Forest soils are too acidic to grow hemp without being limed to significantly alter pH. Hemp is an amazing plant, and can be used for food, oil, fibre, and medicine. It is not however the panacea.

We have to give credit to the politicians who are not rotten, such as the Mayor of Quesnel, Bob Simpson. His town has a LOT to lose by criticizing the forest industry, yet he was very harsh (and accurate) about the true costs of the way forestry is now practiced. Also the Liberal MPP near the end of the program was not afraid to tell it like it is, very bluntly.

It was called "the Wet Coast" until the '90s After clear-cutting the coastal rainforest, it stopped raining much in this region, dis-including recent flooding on the Southern Mainland, not the kind of precip useful to farms, industry, or residents.
