🤰 Why would a pregnant guppy abort its own children? The simple answer is stress. I’ve had two experiences where stress overtook two momma Guppies’ pregnancies. The first case was moving stress. About 7 years ago I saw a SUPER pregnant momma guppy at the fish store and I wanted her - so I took her home! Within 15 minutes she had prematurely given birth in the bag. I got super lucky that most of the babies were already fully developed or else I would have lost them all (spontaneous abortion). The second case was very recent. Coraline (one of the female blue koi guppies) was close to giving birth but towards the end of pregnancy, I noticed her belly deflating. After two days there was no more gravid spot and she was back to being flat. She had completely absorbed her babies (stress defense mechanism). I assume this happened because of the stress that came from being constantly chased by the males in the tank. Poor water quality, breeder boxes, and bright lights can also cause unintentional guppy abortions. It’s super important to make sure Momma guppy feels safe and secure during the end of her short pregnancy. :) Portals and duckweed available at FishPortals.com! 🌱

It often happen in pet stores sadly, pets are mixed between males and females and not neutered yet so if some of them started puberty early you can accidentally buy a pregnant pet. Pets from stores also had terrible breeding conditions so it's not a good choice, either go to an animal shelter or at least meet the breeder yourself.

Fun fact tho: Rabbits, if they feel the environment is not safe, will also absorb their litter (or trigger a miscarriage can't remember rn) Lots of animals have different ways to abort or absorb if environments don't meet their standards, which is a cool evolutionary trait to have!

Nah, when fetus die in any mammal, thats usually when they get absorbed. They can get absorbed slive by another fetus, thats a different case

Are you serious? I got scolded as a kid for calling miscarriages abortions. Now I do think it's better to differentiate because a miscarriage is out of your control and an abortion is a choice. It's just more precise and easier for communication purposes. Like how am I supposed to respond if I don't know if you just told me that you got rid of a parasite or that you lost your unborn child? Two wildly different things that warrant very different responses.

Yup. This is common all over the animal kingdom, that mothers in great distress or in danger will eat their young, abandon them, their body rejects them, or otherwise. A part of the reason why fighting betta fish need to be separated after mating is the females have a tendency to eat their own eggs, which leads to the male killing the female to protect his offspring. Cousin primates to humans may sometimes be under such duress that spontaneous abortions (miscarriages) become more likely.

@@misheo7741 it’s a real story, but it didn’t happen because she was scared to give birth. Sometimes a fetus dies in utero, which can have several outcomes: the body yeetus the fetus (aka miscarriage) or mom goes into premature labour and births a stillborn, OR, very rarely, the body reabsorbs part of the fetus and calcifies the rest. Calcification means that the fetus gets covered with a hard calcium, bone-like shell, in order to protect the mother from toxins that would otherwise be produced as the fetus decomposes. The woman in question had the thing inside of her for more than 50 years I believe? But that said, this is exceptionally rare.

@@zwischenburkaundbikini2418some can fail. It's rare. But people with arm implants also occasionally become pregnant. You can't even make the excuses with IUDs about things moving or whatnot. It's rare but this can happen. With allll contraception, failure can happen. That's why plan B and other methods are important. No one is currently petitioning for better quality of life for all the kids in the foster or adoption system. The system is overloaded and these kids are overlooked.

My fish had a miscarriage, it was rlly pregnant and one of the other fish had been hitting it for weeks and it poked it rlly hard so the Prego fish flew across the tank and it’s stomach ripped open as dead baby fish scattered everywhere. It had a scar on its stomach and sadly passed away a few days later😢

Just to clarify, miscarriage isn't the same as an abortion. Miscarriages happen because the body rejects the offspring for whatever reason. Abortion is the intentional ending of a pregnancy and the surgical removal of the unborn offspring. If a fish "aborted" it's OWN babies, then it most likely laid eggs first and ate them after they were fertilized, which does happen sometimes with some kinds of fish.

@@iris_becker.7037 Not really, because an abortion would be her taking the fish to the vet and surgically removing the offspring. Stress induced miscarriages for early and super early pregnancies can cause the body to reabsorb the miscarriage instead of flushing it out.

@@WaryJester an abortion is not always a surgical. An abortion is the termination of a fetus, animals naturally abort their babies in the wild. For instance some animals wild deliberately consume something to interfere with their pregnancy. Other animals have to function to induce an early birth on command if they feel that conditions aren't right or they feel like their baby will be put in danger in some way.

@@iris_becker.7037 This fish didn't eat something toxic during pregnancy and abort it's own fetuses. During any stressful pregnancy, across animal species, the body's stress chemicals can induce early labor, like in the first case, or it can induce a miscarriage and then either be flushed out or reabsorbed, in the second case. This was NOT a fish abortion. This was a miscarriage of a fish species that reproduces by live birth. Unless the owner deliberately put an abortive in it's habitat (nobody did because they wanted the fish to give birth) or took it to a specialist vet, it's not an abortion.

Lol, you’re insane. Humans are able to control their environment and situation, fish can’t so they are able to absorb the guppies into them. Women can kill their babies due to extreme greed and selfishness. Female fish can absorb their guppies because they’d die already if they were born. It’s an evolutionary trait due to harsh environments, stress, or danger.
