Pro Tools is the "industry standard" because of the corporate capture of the music education industry since 1997. Pro Tools systems were "donated" to schools so that it was the only DAW taught in schools. Just like Microsoft has done.
@PrantoKoX
@PrantoKoX Жыл бұрын
Exactly.👍 That, plus the fact that the merging/buyover with Avid suddenly made it brand linked and a "must" (for NO technical reason whatsoever) for film & TV studios. Plus their absurd tying the software to specific and very expensive hardware through the years makes it very, very hard for professionals & studios especially in America who have invested thousands in Avid/Digidesign stuff and are chained to their thievish auto-update subscription payments to now say "Ah, well, yeah, let's let all of that go now." Psychlogy, ego, and geography. Oh, and marketing. 😉

Yeah this is just not true. As someone who worked for Leo’s Pro Audio/Spitzers Music in the 90’s, California Recording Institute and co founded NorCal DJMPA in the early 2000’s Protools was never given away to schools. It was taught because it was adopted by studios from day 1. Not sure where you got that info from but yeah it’s totally incorrect,
@RussArteaga

@@PrantoKoX again this isn’t true. Pro Tools was used by audio post production studios because it could slave to sony 9pin. A very technical reason that no other daw could do.
@PrantoKoX

@@RussArteaga Yes - but IIRC it was the Digidesign hardware that synced & slaved to the 9 pin Sony ACE protocol interfaces, not a merit of the software itself. In EU we did it with in other ways, not just in video editing, but in mastering (to U-Matic tapes & machines), too.

@@RussArteaga Yeah, it was actually Apple who "donated" the gear to the education industry on which Pro Tools was developed for. Funny thing is the popularity of both the Mac and Pro Tools kind of comes from the fact that the Mac was so underpowered that it needed to be hitched to powerful Pro Tools DSP hardware which could do all the heavy lifting. It's funny because people would buy a Mac and Pro Tools thinking it would give them some advantage when they were relying upon native processing.

I used to work on Pro Tools for many years and I wholly agree about the editing. I use Reaper now for all of my professional projects and I even mapped all of the editing macros to be the same as Pro Tools. I also love how I can have more than one session open at a time in Reaper, so handy for instances where I want to just copy SFX or a music cue from another session. I hated how Pro Tools was so rigid with having to import audio.

Huge fan of your channel! I'd like to see a "Why Pro Tools (the leading DAW in modern recording studios) is good for hardware but still sucks at anything else! Like 20 years ago" video...Cause I really can't explain all the bad stuff about AVID (as a company) and the fact that other DAWs that cost a freaking fraction of PT's price, are delivering crazy updates, so fast that PT would never catch them up even in 20 years. Those features really speed up our workflow a lot (either production, MIDI, recording, mixing, or whatever else), I'm not talking about silly stuff. I think that at this point, it's more convenient switching DAW (from commercial studio to our personal studio) than keeping Pro Tools for compatibility with commercial studios. Mixing in something like Studio One is so faster and easier that you will still save time, also if you have to bounce the multitrack from PT and import it into Studio One. I know you're a smart guy, just try other DAWs out if you haven't done it yet. I used PT like you for 10 years before switching to Studio One, you're right the editing might be a bit better in PT but everything else is on a totally different level.

I'm a full time songwriter/producer working mainly in the Latin tropical/Reggaeton scenes, and also some Latin pop and rock. I'm also starting to work on music for film and documentaries. It is SIMPLY IMPOSSIBLE to work without Pro Tools on any of those scenes. Film audio mixers down here will simply not accept stems: they demand a PT session. Most tropical producers don't know there are other DAWs out there. I work remotely with a lot of American clients and you'd be surprised how many commercial recording facilities in the US are unable to export their PT sessions as stems, or import stems into PT. So I'm not a fan of Pro Tools, I do all my songwriting and producing/programming on Logic Pro X, but... I pay my monthly subscription because I need to work with other people. PT may be unnecessarily clunky and crashy but it's a fact of life.

I also work in Film music and Mixing. I use only reaper. I Founded my own Sound For Film Company and we have a little inside joke about PT being banned from all of our facilities. if they ask for a PT session we just Save a copy, Print in place all of the items and then convert it to a Ptx file using Vordio. Voila! easy as cake, and no one even dares to complain. Using PT just because everyone else is doing it is just lame. why the F would I use an overbloated, overpriced, slow, underdeveloped, nasty, crashy, POS, that always tends to slow me down, or let mi hanging, while taxing me with the burden of paying an exagerated amount of money for less tools and capabilities when I can use one of the MANY alternatives that are not only cheaper, but more stable, flexible, and overall more capable in any way shape or form (today all daws can do the same integration with hardware just the same or even better) Standards are meant to be changed when new better alternatives arrive! so why live in the stone age, when we can rise the standard to something good instead of something shitty?

But on the last update, PT stopped recognizing AAF files to import so I was forced to go to PT, kicking and screaming. The first couple of weeks were hellish, but then I started to see its advantages, and I'm digging it now. The transport still sucks major butt, but mixing on it is so nice.

Anyone that you work with should be happy to bounce their stems or raw tracks to work with them. If the process goes songwriting, production, editing, mixing then mastering, I'm sure either person doesn't mind just bouncing whatever they left the track as. If they want to change something they can just work with the producer to change it.

I contacted avid about the situation and the representative literally mocked me as if someone would pay $700.00 for something and not own it... especially a studio program! when I expressed me displeasure with his ignorance they tried to pacify me with a (one time license) like that was going to make me forget that I just payed $1100.00 on a polished turd that I couldn't even step on because I didn't own it!!! I still have that license and I have yet to activate because I am so discussed with that situation and I wouldn't use that program if it was free! good thing I bought Studio one about the same time and realized that it was much easier to use and you can do everything that you can do in pro tools but easier and I'm tempted to say its better... Great presentation, Colt. These discussions often come with a bit of . . . emotion. My first experience with a DAW was in College, and yes, it was Pro Tools. My Pro Tools class professor was none other than Frank Cook himself. When the time came for me to open my own studio, I went with Pro Tools. Then came the issues - oh boy! I finally reached out to some producer friends, who really made me question my needs. I settled on Apple's Logic Pro X. I'm very, very happy with that decision. Each producer/studio owner has to take an honest evaluation of their needs and expectations. In the end, there really is no "wrong" path. As long as you reach your goal, no one cares how you got there. AND - bottom line: no one ever won, or was snubbed a Grammy depending on a DAW.

At that time I absolutely loved it, yes it was an insane investment but was super reliable and fell in love with the editing tools and workflow. Stopped music for decades and started back a couple of years ago. I tried Logic Pro, was impressed with the midi features but absolutely hated the audio edit and never felt connected with the interface and menus. Now back to protools with the studio version since last week. Slowly getting back to the shortcuts and tricks but wow it feels amazing and super comfy. I guess it just all comes down to what you are comfortable using. There are just so many options now, plenty of reviews and opinion videos, trial offers, just go around, check what fits your style, your budget and go for it, whatever you pick it’s just a tool, the important is what you make of it.

It was tough trying to break away from FL Studio for a while as that DAW was what I used for the longest time. Now that Full Sail gave me Logic Pro and Pro Tools, I feel more well rounded on what my needs are for a specific project. Although I know Pro Tools is the "industry standard", it has been the most troublesome to fully learn in my studies and at times has me shaking at the knees for our workshops. Especially feeling that I can work much faster in FL and Logic versus PT. Thanks for another awesome video Colt, you answered some of the thoughts that come through my head on why I need to learn this DAW.

Protools users only swear by Protools Editing because most of the time they just didn't spend the same amount of time and experience with other DAWs. So they find it "quicker" or "faster" or even "easier" just because they know it and they invest a lot of time learning it... but if they would have done the same thing with another DAW such Logic, Cubase, Studio One, etc... they wouldn't swear that much about Protools. Don't get me wrong, Protools is a decent DAW with lot of PROs and CONs, like every other DAW, it's just not "the best for editing"... that's just some stupid and uneducated statement to make

The ONLY reason I have Protools in my room, is because I conform to PT, when needed. When it goes off to mix or edit. I use Cubase Pro, Digital Performer. And sometimes Studio One for incoming sessions. If I get a PT session to mix, add tracks or to edit, I always dump an AAF of the session into Cubase Pro. Then Back again when finished. Cubase is way more user friendly and it sounds better, in my room, than PT.

Ok so as an owner of protools for years I switch to studio one. My experience with protools was terrible to say the least. Every other session I had it crash midway. Hardware was way to heavy on my computer. (Mind you I recently updated with my ram so I get that part). I’m around young engineers daily and they all agree protools is absolutely garbage.! Only people that still vouch for it is old heads who don’t know anything else. Im 31 so I guess I’m in that category now lol. Studio one is taking over. It’s simply to use. You can watch tutorials for the specific functions you need but other than that the daw is self explanatory. Great workflow that can be customizable for everyone and anything. I believe it will soon be over for avid especially since they went subscription base (SMH) Lastly I will say don’t be scared to use new tech. Times are changing. I said the same thing about tic toc and now it’s the biggest platform for music. I highly recommend studio one but to be honest. It’s not about the DAW you use but how you use it 😁

Great Video. I’m on a Pro Tools Studio subscription and looking to get the perpetual license. I’ve worked with Cubase since Cubase SX2 in 2004 or so. Currently on Cubase 12 Pro. I purchased Pro Tools to open up sessions I recorded at another studio. I found Pro Tools difficult to learn. However, now with Pro Tools having the ability to change Key Command shortcuts, I was able to change most of them to what I had customized in Cubase which made Pro Tools usable. I deleted all of the numpad shortcuts and use a program called Keyboard Maestro to map them to the rest of the keyboard to make them easier to use and make some simple macros. You can make Cubase work like Pro Tools if you know Pro Tools and the other way around.

As someone who used to make a living editing audio, and as someone who has tried just about every other major DAW out there, Pro Tools is still the best at editing...it is SO fast. When I have to edit in another piece of software, I map the PT focus command keys to that software (if I can) to mimic the speed of trackball in the right hand and key commands in the left. It's not just the choice of keys, but also the way the multitool works, and the fact that you can edit down to the sample right there in the arrange window. Other DAWs toy with these features, but they seem so determined *not* to copy PT when it comes to editing, it's infuriating. I also have to second the latency discussion. It just works. That said, complaints about Avid's business model, lack of M1 compatibility, and MIDI functionality are legit (one can get used to work on MIDI in PT, but there are so many DAWs that do it so much better.) I compose in PT thanks to the editing functionality...give me that level and ease of editing natively in your DAW, and I will move to your DAW. (Seriously...I am looking for alternatives all the time, though I swear I've used everything but Bitwig and FL Studio at this point, including Ardour, Reaper, Logic, Studio One, Live, etc...)

@@Tuathband I love Reaper as a DAW - but editing in Reaper is still clunkier than it is in Pro Tools. I had an argument with Justin a few years back about it and he was adamant that Reaper's editing was superior, but I argued that editing audio just wasn't what he did for a living. The multi-tool, the natural key setup, and frankly just the visual feedback on waveforms and zero points crossings on Pro Tools are just better. Everyone just loves to hate on PT, and yes, it deserves some of that hate, but for editing audio for things like video game dialogue, PT is just faster and vastly superior than anything else out there.

Working in Music then transitioning into Film has enabled me to try so many different DAW’s. I dont hate pro-tools, but there are so many DAW’s that surpassed Avid with convenient features. The only thing that is honestly keeping Pro-tools in front is their large market share. But I’ve found my home on Reaper. Yes it is like buying car parts and building you’re own vehicle, but when its done, you become sorta jaded against other programs. I just finished a film with 253 tracks. Just for giggles, I wanted to see how far I could take its performance. In the end, I was able to mix the vocals, foley, music, and include ADR, with 5.1 surround. Not one track was bounced or frozen. I even had other sessions open just to copy and paste tracks. And in the end, I can multi render stems for film distribution requirements. All of my undo’s are unlimited, and saves on a separate file. Sometimes I used the undo history just see how many hours I spent on a session lol. Rendering alone was the number 1 reason I stopped missing PT. I havent had a single failed render, nor have I ever seen Reaper crash.

Avid is extremely lucky that Digidesign pro tools was so entrenched when they were the industry leader. I think it’s a complete lack of forward thinking to rest on that taking you forward, especially with those ‘big studios’ becoming less and less common. At some point they will be left w their current core market, post production for video. 2nd main reason they’re still holding market is that there are a lot of people that started on pro tools and just don’t want to or have time to learn a new daw. great video! elaborated answer: because entire industries (speaking from experience with the film industry) is built around PT, more or less… it’s extremely difficult to switch. Thanks to social media the term “audio professional” has become so SO! widely associated with people that are actually beatmakers, youtubers, bedroom producers, etc. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, there are some incredible people out there, but some of us that work in film or music studios, that have tons of gear, consoles, systems and processes hooked up and routed with PT in mind already can’t really “just buy another DAW bruh” like your average dude on KZfaq might suggest, whoops sorry, not sorry.😅 Don’t get me wrong - AVID’s pricing/business model is complete BS. It’s expensive, it’s not with the customer in mind first, it’s expensive. However, believe it or not, it’s more expensive to restructure to a completely different system in a complex studio/production company. Why? Well, the time it’s needed to do that properly is a time where you have projects, deadlines and clients waiting - basically time, people, and money left on the table. It sucks that AVID still have such a monopoly, especially in the film industry (and they know it, but still behave like corporate bastards), but it’s best to just learn to deal with it. For the time being it’s better to keep on working with what you know and just put out music/films, leaving clients happy and bringing money home, than go though a whole lot just for some eventual convenience at some point potentially quite far down the line. 😄 Hope that sheds some light! Of course, if you’re not working on a commercial film/music project that requires collaboration in a whole bunch of different studios, stick to the DAW you love and know best and just don’t think about it! :)

Thats what it bothers me when people just say "just buy a new daw bruh". I do understand that big studios cant waste time learning and having a big fuss on the hardware. They want the product, they dont care where it comes from as long as the product is made as intended. Hence why avid will never learn and will never change because they re backed up by these huge studios. The small producer doesnt give them much money anyway, hence why they changed to a subscription model. That way they can have more people trying it out and putting a few more millions in the pocket, even if the small guys dont hang out long. 1. When you edit multitrack ensemble instruments like drums you need to maintain the phase relationships between each mic when you perform your edits. In ProTools it’s stupid easy; you select the transient from your lead track and the other transients stay locked in their relationship to that transient. 2. Everything is automatically mono. In Ableton, for example, you have to throw the utility plug-in on to your track to get back to where you should have started. You have no idea how often you’ll kill a mix because you’re out of phase in your bass and lower mids. And my 3. is speculation, but I think sample interpolation is much better in protools than in other daws. Shit just doesn’t sound as phase-y. I think that may go back to the plug-in issues where when you through a plug-in on something in Ableton it automatically runs in stereo, which causes phase issues. Calling back to point 2, protools starts in mono, so you just don’t have to deal with that possibility.

The UAD LUNA DAW may sound better that other DAWs! Because it emulates analog summing, and a representative for UAD said that they simulate the mixing op-amps on the mixing side. No other DAW can do that as far as I know since they all have straight digital summing. Plugins can't achieve that because they can only be used on separate tracks or on the master track after the summing already has been done.

Well, I've been working with Digital Performer forever. In fact, I was using it when it was called Performer and I think Pro Tools back then was called Session 8. I never strayed from Performer. It does everything I want and need from a DAW. I think it's fair to say that whatever works for you best is what you should stick with. For me, I may put MOTU down on my will for an honorable mention.

Reaper is the king for editing by far IF you dig into the customization and extensions. You tell IT what to do, not the other way around.

Yeah, I’ve attempted that over the years and I end up not getting anything done. I’m too busy trying to build a better Reaper monster everyday. Tweaking the key commands and scripts beyond recognition in an effort to make the ultimate workflow. I open up Studio One or Pro Tools and instantly make something.

For very specific types of editing, sure, PT is great. But for classical recording, having source-destination workflows is critical and as far as I know, PT still can’t do that. Also, let’s acknowledge that session compatibility has as much to do with owning all the standard plug-in bundles as jumping on a big mixing console.

So My question though and I'm sure you get this a lot BUT, how important is it to be certified in Pro Tools? Are you certified in it yourself and if you're not do you see it as a problem for future producers or engineers if they are not Pro Tools Certified?

Most everything has already been said here but when it comes to cutting vocals, comping and tuning on the fly nothing comes close to Cubase Pro. I own Pro Tools because I have to since I work in Nashville but when I bring a session back to my studio it immediately gets transferred to Cubase and never goes back.

YO COLT ! I have an interesting idea for your next video. Mixing a Song "alternative/pop track with vocals (Would be easy on everyone's ears). "Mixing Start to Finish." 2 Mixes Same Song. 1 mix is Level Matched to the " T ". The 2nd Mix isn't level matched "which is your mixing style". The purpose. Technical Rule School Based Mix Vs. Raw Feeling!.. Which is Best ?? A video like this would demystify mixing.

Right on! You cannot, to my knowledge, record a live band with zero-latency cue mixes without an HDX system (formerly 192's, etc.). Maybe if it's an apollo-based system that's scaled up, but even still, then you're messing with daisy-chaining apollos and into the weeds with the console software for the cues. Great stuff, brother!
@ColtCapperrune
@ColtCapperrune Жыл бұрын
For sure HDX is not actual zero latency, but it effectively is zero latency when recording. I’ve never had any issues. But the workflow with latency versus Apollos is so much better. Honestly I’m considering moving to a different interface because calculating latency is infuriating with the Apollo

In a typical small studio or home environment, a computer with a massive amount of RAM/memory is needed to keep latency at bay. Even with a powerful computer, if you try to monitor using the DAW while processing effects there will still be issues. I have been laughed at for bringing a huge multi-track recording device with me to track small live events. There is no latency with a multi-track recorder because that tool was designed to perform one job, record and monitor without latency.

Back in 1995 when I bought my first DAW, there were a few on the market and at that time you could hear the difference between the DAW's. I went with Sonic Solutions which was the only one that was 24bit. I could hear the difference between ProTools and Sonic. I was also going into film sound design and post. Sonic's ability in editing was far better than the others at the time. Too bad Sonic decided go into DVD mastering instead of sticking to sound. From there I went to Wave Frame because it was the closest to Sonic Solutions, but Wave Frame then turned in to Merging Technologies. I was on Merging for a few years, and I loved Merging but the cost was just too high. Sonic Solutions and Merging were both like Swiss army knives and you could set up your work space any way you want. Then I went to ProTools and just go frustrated with the crashes and just how unelegant it was to edit on ProTools. Now I am on Reaper, just because I can set up my work space as I want it and I am able to use OSC to control Reaper. All my plugin shortcuts are on my Android pad and I don't have to search for things. In sound time is money, the faster you can do something without thinking the faster and better it gets done. ProTools seemed to always screw up my creative juices. I wish Avid would focus more on what we need as a DAW than how they can make the most money from us. If ProTools in any way was far superior to all the other DAW I would have been on it long before and I would still be on it. I am very happy with Reaper, it has saved me at least 2 hours on every mix. So it is making me money as well.

I think I remember Greazy Wil saying something to the effect of "There are lots of things other DAWs can do really well that Pro Tools is just 'okay' at, but Pro Tools is just 'okay' at so many more things than any other DAW." His point was basically that Pro Tools can at least *kind of* do anything you want it to.

I’d probably take it a step further than that, the only thing ProTools is bad at, is midi. it’s definitely one of the worst options for composition with virtual instruments. That said, it is definitely more than capable of doing it, and it’s so much better at everything else in my opinion.
@RueMorgue1841
@RueMorgue1841 2 ай бұрын
I almost never work with extensive midi composition anyway. I've been using Studio One for years, Logic for years before that. I switched to Pro Tools just this week because of the weird little niche things it can do that no other DAW seems super capable of, at least not obviously capable of. The batch rename function alone is a huge time-saver.

I'm trying to get more familiar with Pro Tools and I am having so much trouble. I cannot find a clear answer to this question. Is it possible to create a send that only impacts the wet signal? Everything I try impacts both the dry and wet or just the dry. Frustrating
