Kim O'Hara was born in Warren, Rhode Island, and produced her first motion picture at the age of 25. Trailers of her movies can be accessed on bit.ly/1jKFKu2. She was the screenwriter on American Reunion. She is very open about the fact that she thought she could make movies about troubled characters to heal audiences, but found frustration in limited distribution of her films. Her personal crisis and recovery from sexual abuse and addictions after the birth of her second child led her to discover book coaching, and she opened her company A Story Inside. She coaches women ready to speak their truth through writing their books. Writing is a challenge for many people, then add in recovery from the shame and denial of sexual abuse. Kim's book makes healing through writing accessible to anyone with her signature writing prompts. No subject is untouched, from spirituality to sexuality, and she is candid about all the maneuvers she did to avoid facing this dark shadow in her life.

Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

It does pay off when you can write a book though and have that process not only change you but if you have the right platform, you can change lives for a lot less marketing dollars. A Lot less!

You never owe it to anyone to stay with a business that treats you poorly, whether it's an individual company or an industry at large. Never be bullied into doing things you don't want to do, saying things you don't want to say, believing things you don't want to believe, and taking jobs you don't want to take. Nothing but respect for Kim.

She is damn smart, wise and insightful. I REALLY need someone like this to guide and help me to improve as a writer.

The history of Hollywood starts with the movie industry learning to be profitable and once the profits but once the financial pay offs were more successful gatekeeping begins. So corruption happens as gatekeepers require their pound of flesh in addition to stated rules and payments.

I greatly appreciate this interview and this woman. It’s a hard decision to make. I live in a state that is starting to get more work coming in, and the ugliness of the business is starting to read its ugly head again. Many are attracted to the idea of being an actor (which is what I have been doing for 10 years), and they have yet to see the constant rejection, the lack of follow through for projects, and the fact that the production that come through here outsource their casts and crews and leave scraps for the people of our state. If social media didn’t exist, and the perpetuating of the false narrative that the industry is all sunshine and rainbows and behind the scenes pics of this and that, I feel like many of the newcomers wouldn’t even have any desire to be in the industry. It’s all a false narrative of, “you’re missing out” if you aren’t in the industry. It’s like when a person hates a city that they moved to, far from home. They hate the people, the expense, the smell, everything, and yet when they talk to other people about living there? They are on cloud 9! You’ve got to come here! Visit or move here! It’s great! Do it! Just to have a person move there or visit them so they have someone to commiserate with, and not feel so alone, because often times these big cities are lonely places when you’re in this industry. True friends are hard to come by. Sorry for the rant.

As a former aspiring scriptwriter,it is the dramatic inner business structure of the film industry, the business side of all things that are film related, and the major change in the film industry in Harry Knowles having Knowles-ized both the film industry and the film fandom community(and base) that has driven out both many aspiring and professional writer(along with actors, actresses, and filmmakers) far away from the film industry.

I love that she was so honest, we need more of that but it's tough because you worry it might hurt your career some day if the wrong person sees it. Big respect to her and Chris Gore, who are 2 of the most genuine people I ever had the pleasure to listen to. I can understand why someone who loves movies and writing would quit the film business, altogether. The payoff is just poor, even for talented professional writers, as the directors and producers want to run everything at all costs, leaving very little room to REAL creative artists, and then we see the results of such bad decision: Terminator Dark Fate, Alien Covenant (what the hell was that movie about it, anyway?), a huge load of poorly-written animated movies, comic books adaptations, cheap-looking CGI action movies and endless reboots/remakes. No wonder why creative masterminds, such as David Lynch, left the industry for good. There's just no room for new concepts and ideas anymore, but just a huge competition of regurgitated ideas.

Quitting Hollywood for me was about trying to find a "normal" lifestyle... how is it "normal" (or even sane!) to work 14 to 16 hours every day for someone else's vision? We are not Hebrew slaves in Egypt building pyramids for Pharoah, but that's pretty much how we're treated.
