16 years on a CBR1100XX Blackbird, loved it. Scoffed at ever buying a stodgy, posh BMW. But, the 'Bird got old, 90K miles, and I started looking around. Friends riding GS's were fast on the backroads and raved about their bikes. But I wanted a bit more comfort for those long days. Before covid, I took a test ride on an RT - when I say test ride, I mean that I rented one in San Francisco and did 1600 miles of Northern California with my wife riding pillion. I was surprised by how capable it was. So when I got a bonus at work, I went right down to the dealer and bought my own RT in 2021. I love this bike. I can whip it around mountain roads with gusto, or ride the open country roads or highway with the cruise control on, either way, I'm perfectly comfortable for 3-400 miles. I did finally get the Connected app sorted, but it does have shortcomings. So I mounted a Zumo XT, which has its own shortcomings. But between the two, I always get there! 😆

Hey there from the other side of the world. I'm a K1600gt owner and just had the 1250 RT as a loaner, because my bike was at the workshops and I have to agree with you that the RT is a great bike. It feels relativly light and nimble for the heavy thing that it is. My own bike feels more heavy and is not as nimble but I like the inline six cylinder engine even more than the boxer. More power, more top end rush und all the comfort you might want. You have to ride the six cylinder just to try it. It's an awesome engine and just over 6000 rpm it really sings. Always brings a smile to my face.

I accept that for you, the K1600 is absolutely fabulous. I think riders' natures are divided into two camps. Those that love the turbine-like howl of a four or six-cylinder engine and those that like the grumpy/happy bangers that are twins.I'm one of the latter and could never exchange that for multi-cylinder smoothness no matter how fast they can go.

Sooo, RT with some basic crash bars and swap a bash plate, add 70/30 tires and the RT is a perfect gravel bike plus the usual highway miles. Last summer I swapped for 50/50 tires in Fairbanks Alaska and rode the sloppy road to Deadhorse. No need for the GS unless you are up for stump and rock crawling. Have you considered using a dedicated phone for the bike? I bought a cheap factory refurbished Samsung Galaxy for my RT (MY21) since there seems to be no difference in app connectivity among the Apple or Android versions. And if you only have the app and your music (if you listen to music while riding) on the phone, nobody can access your personal information even if the phone gets stolen from the charging compartment during pit stops. In 2021 the Connected app would crash on almost every ride, and had to be rebooted. But since the 2022 s/w update it has not crashed any more. However, as you know, the app is useless for planning multi-day journeys. For that you need trip planning software and a laptop or a desktop. But for shorter rides you can save enough 'favorites' on the app and easily select one from the TFT as your next destination/waypoint.

This is probably the best solution, thanks I will look into doing this. I normally plan my routes on Basecamp and upload the gpx files to the BMW app. I still get a problem with the ‘wifi’ dropping at stops and not reconnecting.

Having had both knee and spinal surgery and at 71 yrs old no way am I going on dirt tracks. I'm 8 weeks of ownership and have already put 50% of my Harley 4 year mileage on the RT and I love it. I buy used and I buy on price. Any of the big tourers will work just fine for North American mile crunching. American V twins are the popular choice here on the Canadian Prairies and are pricey. GS' are popular and pricey used. Gold Wings seem better at holding value than the BMWs. Another advantage of a machine that is not made for going off road is that they never go off road. Big tourers are owned by old dudes many of whom are obsessive about maintenance and the bike lives its life on cruise control in top gear. Its safe to buy one with significant mileage that has been well maintained. I looked at R12 GTs but ended up with a K1600GT. Where I live there are more sellers than buyers so it's easy to find a very well maintained example for a good price.

@@BikerTorque I visited the BMW dealership today and saw that there are still new 2022 K1600s for sale at very discounted prices. We are just past the prime spring selling season. I figure that it's only a matter of time until BMW discontinues the model especially with the big touring editions of the R18 that have been introduced. Mine is a 2013 model that I purchased recently with 80,000 km. It's been well looked after and I get the impression that it's built like a tank. It's very good at long days on the highway and there's no other reason to buy one. I recently spent ten hours in the saddle for a long ride from Vernon BC to Edmonton Alberta. I'm 5'11", 190 lbs and 64 years old. I'm intimidated by the weight of the machine. I've accepted that at some point the bike will have a low speed drop. I have the luxury of having a KTM SMCR for getting around town and for short blasts on the highway. Someone who is younger and stronger than I am might consider a K1600 as an only bike but it's still a poor choice for anything other than the highway.

Agree with your words. If you are planning on riding dirt then the GS is the one. The off roading is a gimmick to me, taking a GS really off road is really challenging. Service forest roads and dirt roads is maybe already too much for any regular GS rider. I choose an RT over a GS for that exact reason, I dont have any dirt to play around nearby so the RT is a much better handling machine on the tarmac. It has a shorter wheelbase and the 17 front inch tire is way better on the road than the 19' on the GS. Weather protection is excellent too. And the big plus of the RT, you feel like a moto cop while riding it! and they even wave at you when you pass them. Amazing stance, big but nimble and super sporty. If you live in Australia the RS could arguably be the best choice. In the UK you need weather protection which makes the RT a clear winner. The RT is also probably better for a pillion & luggage, and the slightly more upright riding position suits most older riders. The GS is just a pretend off-roader. Barring rally riders who is going to take one properly off road and risk dropping it? If you avoided bankruptcy from the cost of repairs, you'd still be in hospital getting your hernia repaired after trying to recover it. I chose a 2019 RT because I wanted conventional dials and the separate satnav housing - couldn't be arsed with the current TFT screen, BMW app & phone link, etc.

I'm lucky to have a 2018 GS and an 2019 RT and more often my bike of choice has been the RT. Love the looks of the GS, but as you say I won't take my own bike worth 17k off road. Also, starting to appreciate how easy it is to get on and off the RT. Most importantly my wife prefers the RT as a pillion, says the GS is terrible.

Great specific review. My concern with the RT is that the great weather protection may be too much in a hot climate. Do you think you would get enough airflow on a 35 degree day? I’m a Kiwi, and that’s the perfect bike for touring NZ, but I now live in Perth and hence my concerns. Thanks.

These are the best bikes but you do cook on hot summers days. Lowering the screen only adds air to your helmet and the rest of you stays hot. Amazing bikes for everything but the hottest part of summer.

So, I went to look at one, cause the new style called me a bit. I don't really care much anymore for BMW bikes, after 2 K1600 with all kind of crazy issues. By the time they gave me a proposal out the door price, I was able to get a new Goldwing DCT Tour out the door priced cheaper than the RT. So, I went with the Honda. Unbelievable bike.

That’s surprising that the Goldwing came in under the R1250RT. Out of interest, what issues did you have with the K1600? I haven’t ridden one but keep hearing mostly very positive things about the bike. Thanks for watching

@@BikerTorque The RT is friendlier in city riding. The wing is a tank, however I would say now, after owning one, no regrets for even city riding. The K's both ate a bit of oil which its know on them. Both of them, out of no where, always had some kind of electrical/sensor issues. If you don't own the maint. reset tool, you need to run to the dealer to clear them. The Grand America was a different story. Got it new, back in 18, once reached around 12k miles, all kind of electrical problems. It was not a Lemon bike, was told. Moreover, handlebar was always slightly pushing to the left. Was also speed limited heavily. The GA hated riding between 2 trucks, the dirty air issue would wobble the bike and that was crazy, than big recall on the gear issue, than if you use reverse mode, you better not shut her down in reverse. It could be bad news. On top of that, in hot days, this bike boils in stop and go traffic. Just was not impressed anymore. Just too much for one rider to take. I just wanted to ride and not worry if tomorrow the check engine light will be on. Not for me. With the wing, I just ride and ride and ride and never once, once to the dealer with even a tiny issue, zero, nothing.

As far as Beemers go, I like the old stuff. But if I was going to go full grey nomad on bikes, I think this would be it. Same sentiment with the Goldwing. However, the servicing is unnecessarily complicated (expensive). The BMW is easy to maintain in comparison. And plus, Honda is more boring to ride than a BMW. But it’s a close call. 😅

I’m probably the only defender of the BMW app in the bike world. I find it excellent, and adding waypoints is easy as hell. The only issue is turning off notifications and putting on do not disturb. If you do both, you won’t ever drop the connection. The navigation is perfect and simple. To add waypoints: 1) search for destination (using the map icon from main screen) use postal code or name 2) select your destination 3) on left at the bottom click the waypoint icon (map with dotted line and waypoint sign (DOH!!!) 4) choose from drop down (set as start point or set as destination/waypoint) 5) once set choose route type, fast/winding/etc on central button at bottom 6) to add another waypoint click + icon (top right of dialogue box) 7) use postal code, name or icon ribbon bar with categorised POIs (petrol, food, etc) 8) click floppy disk icon to name and save route 9) when connected to bike, go to nav screen and saved rides 10) become a good biking journo by reading manuals and instructions so you can inform the audience better

Greetings from southern Finland. I'm currently on my third RT (MY21) and even though the stock seats have been sorta OK, three years ago I decided to get a Russel Day-Long tractor style saddle. It was the best investment ever. Now I can easily ride multi-day trips, and seat comfort is no longer an issue. The new seat felt a tad high at bat, but it did sag within a thousand miles or so, as advertised. Since Russel replaces the stock padding w/ their own stuff (you can choose to retain the old heating element), I went ahead and bought a salvage seat from Holland and sent it over to California. This made it possible for me to continue riding while they were working on the saddle. They have a pretty long waiting list. I am not sure whether old R1200RT seats are plug and play for 1250s, but if they are, they can probably be bought cheaply from salvage companies. After all, you only need to send the frame to Russel .

No doubt the gsa looked crazy out there next to dirt bikes and dual sports but man did i have a blast. Nothing like feeling that boxer power pulling you up hills over boulders or getting 600lbs airborne. Worst part was having to pick the heavy beast up every time I washed out. @@BikerTorque true, I apparently was summarizing! But one other thing about all modern BMWs, including the venerable RT, is that if you want/need to work on your own bike they are no longer the best choice. It’s been true a pretty long time now. Hard to recall when BMWs came with comprehensive owners manuals and a pretty reasonable tool set. Very hard actually, I am 71. But they did. Now BMW have made that very hard to do by many separate, but jointly effective, approaches to the engineering, execution and distribution of the products. It changes the whole notion of motorcycling. Other makers do it too, but not so extensively, I would say, as BMW. Anyway that could be another reason not to get one for your road burner. Getting stuck in a remote place with an error code, no tool, no manual, no dealer, etc etc, is a drag. The thing is, passing through all those remote places Between somewhere and somewhere else is the whole point of riding. For me at least.
