If you're looking to improve your fluency and wondering how to improve English speaking skills, learning English online could be the solution you've been searching for.
In this video, we'll look at the subtle, but very important, difference between "Why WOULD you?" and "Why DID you?" The basic idea is that "would" expresses surprise, something contrary to expectations, disbelief, or disapproval, about an action or decision, usually because the speaker is confused or shocked. Often, the person ASKING the question is most important for "would questions," because THEIR values or expectations are the ones being violated in some way. Questions with "would" can be real or hypothetical, but "would" generally invites a conversation about reasons and values.
Something in the past:
1. Why did you lie to your friend?
Why would you lie to your friend? That doesn't seem like something you would do.
2. Why did you go to the store yesterday?
Why would you go to the store yesterday? It was closed for renovations.
3. Why did you want to visit Paris?
Why would you want to visit Paris? It's the peak of tourist season.
4. Why did you say you'd help him with the project?
Why would you say you'd help him with the project? You're already overwhelmed with your own tasks.
5. Why did you go to the party last night?
Why would you go to the party last night? You weren't feeling well.
6. Why did you quit your job?
Why would you quit your job? You were just about to get a promotion!
Something in the present:
1. Why do you always say you'll start exercising but never do?
Why would you always say you'll start exercising but never do? It's just setting yourself up for disappointment.
2. Why do you go to that restaurant if you don't like their food?
Why would you go to that restaurant if you don't like their food? There are plenty of other options nearby.
3. Why do you want to buy a new car when yours is perfectly fine?
Why would you want to buy a new car when yours is perfectly fine? It's a waste of money.
4. Why do you say you'll wake up early tomorrow when you know you won't?
Why would you say you'll wake up early tomorrow when you know you won't? It's just wishful thinking.
5. Why do you go jogging in the rain?

6. Why do you play the guitar?
Why would you play the guitar? You have no fingers!
