For years I've been wanting to discuss what separates a martial artist from a fighter. But who better to do it than an actual philosopher and martial artist?
I'm so honored to have my friend David Tian-a former professor in Asian philosophy-talk about the meaning behind martial arts.
This is one of my favorite collaborations to date, and had an amazing time putting this together.
If you're into psychology, philosophy, relationships, and self-improvement, David Tian's content is second to none.

Love this message! Lawrence your content is awesome! You deserve continued success. Amen for positive maculinity. As far as I'm concerned. "toxic masculinity" is a misnomer, real Masculinity is about respect, honor and duty. It is about being a warrior with an indomitable spirit and the courage to fight for what is right and just. The problem in the world today is we need more real warrior men.

My greatest personal lesson from training combat sports so far is as follows: Unless you are capable of wreaking havoc, of truly hurting someone at will, but deliberately choose not to and instead choose to be good, kind and loving, you cannot be truly called peaceful, you are just harmless. Martial arts /combat sports teach us that in order to be truly humble, kind and loving, we must first become intimidating, formidable and strong and full of confidence that stems from that.

Problem with that is 99% of martial artists believe they are capable of "wreaking havoc" when in reality they believe a complete delusion. Delusion, philosophical polarization and bragging "humble" sophistry permeate martial arts like a plague.

@@alantaylor6691 Change that 99% to maybe 5-10% (10% would be stretch) and you would be correct. I fight through Muay Thai in Australia and majority of fighters are respectful and incredibly compassionate towards each other. There's for sure a few fighters who are egotistical and act like cunts but that's a problem plaguing humanity not martial arts.

Martial Arts thought me two things 1. How to deal with conflict. Plenty of times, especially during sparring, sometimes my partner would make a move that hurt like shit. Therefore I had to learn how to voice my discontentment in a friendly mannner. 2. And most importantly, it taught me how to stay calm. My main art is boxing. So learning how to stay calm and thinking of a stratergy while getting punched in the face continuously helped a lot. Getting punched in the face is one of the most intense situation a person can get into, and if you can stay calm in that situation, you can stay calm in any situation.

Amazing video. I was always intrigued by martial arts as a kid. Ninja turtles, wwf, Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee. I found mma around 18 and at 19 I started training. It’s been the single most transformative thing I’ve ever done. Taught me so many lesson thru experience rather than examples. Recommend it to everyone who’s interested

The pride of guiding & supporting my young students through their Martial journey, developing in ability, technique, speed, stamina, respect, confidence cannot be given a monetary value! This video Hits a spot I prefer to not to look at usually. I grew up with my older brother feeling inferior and quite the opposite of a warrior. He beat me and made me feel worthless. When i started practicing martial arts my life transformed, the first time i could get my brother into submission was the last time he didn't respect me. This is a powerful message and really, the core of martial arts as I came to love them. Aside from that, this voice over is much more enjoyable than the one you tried out in the recent videos. I'd be happy to hear this voice in your upcoming videos :) Keep up your great work with this channel, you bring out the best in us

lol, very excellent video Lawrence and by David Tan. Kudos to both of you. I have been training retreating and counter striking although I am fast and quite powerful and precise if I want to be. have been too far away from opponents when I spar. Recently have some breakthroughs due to learning how to pivot, side step, jabs and various push kicks..., feints at ease with good balance and reflexes and economy of movements at minimal efforts and distancing, attack from timing of opponents and their jabs or kicks,.... and how to block out the opponents hands or legs via hand block or leg blocks etc.... and now with muay thai balancing and efficient ease of movement, I can stay much closer with opponents yet strike or counter them easily than before, or mirror them in defense or dodge their strikes mainly....

I have done yoga, fasting, spirituality in different forms, didn't work for me... its only when I started getting into the dojo, fought, lost, won, got frustrated, overcame the frustration, followed the warrior code, learned discipline, only then I started to develop as a person. I was lucky to have a good sensei who trained us with devotion and love, not only did he physically trained us, he also corrected our personal flaws, listened to our problems, encouraged us when we were down. I have much respect for him and I eternally grateful for his guidance.

There is a link to what is being said and astrology. The martial aspect in every person is related to the planet Mars. Mars was also the god of war in ancient times. The ancient gods are the 7 archetypes that exist in men/women. Mars is the masculine power, Venus the feminine. If you combine both archetypes in a warrior, you get amazingly elegant fighters. Elegance/grace/beauty are aspects of Venus. Power, going for it, initiative are aspects of Mars. In brief the 5 remaining archetypes: * Saturn: keeping form, survival instinct (fear) * Jupiter: growing, expanding, learning * Mercury: intellect, understanding * Moon: emotion, sensitivity * sun: wilpower, selfconfidence The sun defines your 'stance/posture'. Eg Buakaw Banchamek has sun in taurus. Taurus is unmoving. Stubborn, solid wall. I think this picture is clear 🙂
