This anime was exactly what I needed in 2024 -- a journey filled with laughs, tears, and lessons learned. It was funny and refreshing to see such a meaningful series rise to the top of My Anime List. I can't wait for season 2!
Did you watch Frieren? If you did, what were your thoughts?
Thank you for watching!

Since a lot of people seem confused, FMA:B is one of my favorite shows of all time! I included a clip to show the art style/sound quality because newer viewers may not give the show a chance (it isn’t as flashy as new shows). Also, I *do* enjoy/did enjoy a lot of my time watching shounen. I just would like some variety in the themes and ideas presented in the shows I watch.

When my grandmother passed away, I was a bit like Frieren. This was a piece of information, old people die, you can't do anything about it, this is how it is. Better that than slowly getting taken by dementia. People were expecting me to take it hard, and I felt like something was wrong with me because I really loved my grandmother, this was the first burial I went to where I really knew the person being buried. But when the moment came to formerly say "goodbye" to the coffin, the dam broke and I started crying, just like Frieren. Everything was suddenly much more real. This was the last time I would ever get to see my grandma. Fortunately, I didn't have the level of regret of Frieren. Whenever I had the opportunity to visit my grandma, I visited her. Nowadays, it is hard for me to go visit my parents, because of how far away I live from them, but I do my best to see them regularly.

My mom passed away almost a year ago. I was her caretaker and we were extremely close. Losing her has been the worst thing that's ever happened to me, and I struggle daily with the pain and grief. I have trouble getting into new things, but a friend recommended Frieren. When I finally got into it, I expected a comedy based on all the memes I'd seen. It turned out to be this genuinely deep and touching reflection on grief, loss, regret, and trying to move on and savor the moments we get with friends and loved ones. It's really helped me process a lot of emotions.

I'm so sorry for your loss and sorry for feeling some form of comfort from reading that you struggle daily with the pain and grief. Maybe the feeling of comfort comes from knowing that there are others out there going through the same thing but I have never really been any good at pinpointing why I feel certain ways. In any case, thank you for sharing your story. I lost my mom just a few weeks ago. A week before that, watching Frieren and videos that talked about it made me realize that I should spend more time and create more memories with my mom so I started planning things to do with her for this current week, when I got to go home for vacation. Unfortunately, she passed suddenly, before I could share with her what I had planned.

@@wushuallan Oooof. All of the above stories are haunting, though yours is very hard indeed. Reminds me a bit of when my Grandfather died. We did talk, but I planned on talking to him so much more. And back then he was so old, but in so good condition that I thought he was almost immortal (he was 95 when he died. And I personally knew people who actively lived beyond 100 easily). That is when mortality of others hit me. When it comes to my mum, we will soon have 15 years since she passed. Sadly (?) it wasn't sudden. On the plus side it gave me time to talk to her more, but on negative side - well, dying slowly from cancer is painful. And as her primary caretaker it was a lot of work and a lot of pain to see what was happening to her.

I mean Frieren on bed, when talking about Starks 18th birthday was closest thing in Frieren to "fan service" ;) . And it actually had meaning. Of course some will also count all those Mimics. IDK if I'd call it a "foot fetish" (like some people do) for having an emphasis on feet of one elf that are shown maybe 3 times. Elf that famously walks barefooted and wears stuff that was popular thousands of years ago. It is mostly there to show how bored she is. She has important conversation and at the same time she is giving herself a foot bath and inspecting said feet. Almost to say: "Regardless of how important this conversation is, I had thousands like this and will have thousands more, how are my feet doing, nothing wrong with them? That's good."

When my dad had a stroke some 6ish years ago I moved my life back home with him and my mom. It truly made me realize how old I was at the time and more importantly how frail someone can get when you aren't around them everyday for years. Frieren I watched when it was 3 days from episode 28 airing. I'm glad I waited to binge. The show makes you stop and think. It is a true rollercoaster of emotions that you experience over life. Frieren is hard to convey in words to people. It is the site that if you don't give it a chance is just like life. You'll wake up one day and realize that you can't go back in life and the world changes around you seemingly without you paying all that much attention. Great video!

That is literally the show having nothing to teach you, it just so happens to pander to your crusty old expectations and confirm your more recently acquired biases. You got bored of the novelty of the previous shows you ONLY watched for novelty when you were younger, and now this is where you find same kind of novelty and are not already bored with. YOU are the one who will grow out of it. You grow bored of it. You have just staved off boredom this far, not approached shows for a new perspective that would enlighten you even IF it is boring. I do find it boring, though being boring is not my holdup with these shows. My issue is blind faith fandoms like that of Jobless Incarnation that simply throw out these 10/10 ratings, performatively, to say THEY like it but not having anything to say about a show that has nothing to say for itself. It's filler for your MAL profile to say somehing about yourself. These characters are just finding a new depth in gossip fodder, pretending you're talking about events or concepts when really its' just more of the lowest capacity of mind. talking about people. Not even real people but characters who exist to replace real people you find boring. I've been liking Undead Unluck, because it's magnificently derived and condensed. Not in its own story structure but it seems to able to tell almost EVERYTHING any action shounen takes a 100 episodes to tell, and tell them all at once. And USUALLY shows like these are deathly boring, heady and obtuse, while Undead Unluck turns that into a crazy pace of unconventional plot shifts. It's like anti-MacGuffin The Show.

I know it's weird. But I always imagined you as Frieren when I was watching this anime. A parallel that never was, but could've been. I didn't know those details on the production and actors, but I do appreciate them now, they definitely made a masterpiece. Philosophically, Frieren gave me weight to emotions. When I look at media, I tend to imagine myself as the main character, circumstances and all. What I see with Frieren is a life that was blind to emotion, suddenly become fully aware, and slowly gain a deeper understanding of said emotions as time passes. Neglecting these emotions is almost like neglecting a vital part of connection with other people. So I thank Frieren as a story for this and many other lessons. Great video and you guys should watch Frieren!

Legit one of the reasons I stopped watching so much Shonen was because it's getting a lot darker and there's a bunch of unecessary death from a narrative standpoint, just using a lot of shock value to try and cheaply hit people's emotions, on top of the formulaic approach they take, same thing with isekai recently. A couple years ago I was fully in to it but it's so saturated with generic clones that I've been turned off to the majority of it and I find myself watching anything that's even slightly different.

i am in the opinion that frieren should calm down for a few years until the hype goes down. i usually notice that good anime tend to go bad in succeeding seasons due to popularity. i think that, frieren is not just an anime giving you life lessons and good art and so on. evident in the show itself, i believe frieren is a mockery towards the norm of anime shows in current time. people these days are too focused on action, cringey power-ups, and powerful animations and the companies that produce anime are also driven by profit and personal interests, that everybody becomes relatively thoughtless about the things they watch they fail to question or notice the little things that actually matter. i miss the time when watching shows made you "feel" something.

I remember when people said the same thing 5, 10, 15 and 20 years ago. That being said there is a reason why I don't think Season 2 will come earlier than Winter 2026 season (which means late fall of 2025) and probably later. They have enough material to make Season 2 as long as Season 1. But there isn't much material after that yet. I think they will wait (remember that getting slot on Japanese TV takes time. Producing Anime takes time etc. - they didn't announce Season2 yet, which means those things aren't being worked on yet) until they have enough material to at least follow Season 2 by OVA or have 1 cour long Season 3. Which given that it is unlikely they will produce said OVA or Season 3 immediately, they will actually have enough material for full Season 3 when this gets released. And Manga is being released at SLOW pace. 1-2 chapters a month is often norm lately.

It sounds like you can't get into a story unless you personally relate to the themes, experiences, or characters in some way. I love Frieren, I think it deserves to be number one on MAL, and I myself relate to similar feelings of loss. But I noticed a lot of people are trying to recreate that old childhood feeling of awe and wonder, which adulthood basically kills for you the older you get. And I think Frieren appeals to that inevitable adult experience of loss yet reminding you not to take the people around you for granted. That's why older folks like us adore it, because we've all been Frieren at some point. Frieren deserves its love. But it's also a very specific kind of show where most meatheads or kids will just find it boring which I think is unfair. Its impossible to convince them because they're just looking for different stories than you are or I am. Also shout out to Keijo, absolute cinema, fellow woman of culture

As one person explained - different fandoms. That being said I've been reading Frieren for over 2 years now I think. Yes, there are flaws, but 1. They are minor ones or 2. They are matter of taste. Nothing to hate Frieren for sure. Additionally adaptation team did a lot of work to correct seamlessly a lot if not all of said mistakes. Which makes anime close to flawless or flawless. You also have to consider length. It is much easier to find one tiny mistake in Anime with hundreds or thousands of episodes, then it is with one that has 28 and hasn't delved very deeply into lore yet (since it isn't the point and it isn't that important, because for now we didn't have any object, which had to be understood to the core in order to make stuff happen in story).

1:18 I don't feel like criticizing how much filler is in Shonen is accurate. Sure, it applies to things like One piece, Bleach, and Naruto, but Shonens coming out today don't suffer from the filler problem. There is almost no filler in shows like JJK, AOT, Chainsaw Man, Hell's paradise, Demon Slayer, HXH, FMAB, and JJBA. Even shows that do have filler, like Black Clover, do a better job at integrating the filler into the story and themes. We no longer have filler like Robots showing up in a ninja village, or episodes upon episodes of nothing happening while they go to a beach. 1:28 This is just completely disingenuous. Saying that Shonens and modern shows lack any lessons to take away from the story could only be because you're lying or because you're watching these shows with your eyes and ears closed. You could claim that Shonens aren't very subtle with their themes or that the ideas in Shonens are simplistic (which would make sense, as Shonens are made for kids), but saying that there are no lessons or takeaways is crazy.
@jannegrey593
@jannegrey593 2 ай бұрын
To the second point - perhaps message in those Shounens are simply a bit repetitive. Someone who watched Naruto, Bleach and couple other classics, might find something new in "modern Shounens", but a lot of it will still be a repeat of things that were in those older shows, just repackaged. That being said, main reason there is less filler now is because Anime's used to be produced at the same time Manga was. There is a gintama meme video somewhere about this. EDIT: to the first point - I think though that JJK manages to escape that particular trap. Of course some things there will be similar to things in older Anime, but "originality" doesn't mean you have to be "100% Everything new, everything different etc.".

Tropes aren't bad. They're merely patterns in storytelling that we've noticed occur because people have been telling stories for as long as there have been people and certain ways of telling stories just work (or at least seem like they'll work). What's bad is when storytellers fail to use tropes well.

2:44 cherry picking and very disingenuous, if your going to speak about the something, do it is the same way, talk about Frierens dub talk about the story or lessons Fmab has, show Frieren's similarly funny and stupid (in a good way) jokes and scenes, you don't need to put down something inorder to pull something up, and lastly you don't need a favourite and anyone who says other wise is factly wrong.

It does feel like severe cherry picking. That's the only moment in the entirety of FMAB that I feel could be classified as "Fanservice" and the vast majority of the show isn't like that at all. Also, calling FMAB so old and outdated that someone would laugh at even the idea of watching it feels very disingenuous. 1. It's not even that old, 2. I've seen a lot of people criticize FMAB, but never because it's too old for them to watch.

FMA is one of my favorite shows of all time. The point I was trying to make is that NEW viewers don’t tend to see it that way for the visual and sound quality… not the fan service.

You misunderstood the point. I have known hundreds of people who refused to watch great older show, because it didn't look like it was made in the last 5 years.

Yes, I can afford to miss Frieren. Videos with titles like "you must" or "absolutely need to watch" or this one "can't afford to miss" will probably convince a good chunk of people to avoid the anime. It's a great series, yes. But it's just anime. People can choose to watch it or they don't. My point is: if you're going to sell the anime, just don't write titles that seem to force people to watch it.

I sort of agree. I will just counter with: "Don't tell people how to write their titles, people can choose what titles they want" ;) Also probably on more serious note there are some studies that suggest that such titles make more people to click the video. Not that it is malicious here.

@@jannegrey593 yes it is not malicious. What I'm saying is, if the postor's intention is to sell the idea that Frieren is an awesome anime, she shouldn't pick a title with forceful words. Like you said, there are studies that suggest using such words make people avoid the video.

You'd watch a terrible show (Frieren) just because it's different? The show itself doesn't have any real substance, it's just concepts you are adding to the show to make it seem deeper that it actually is. Most of the stuff you said, doesn't actually get explored in the show or draws a conclusion from it. In short frieren is too simple for me. It's too basic and people only like it because it's carried by its animation to compensate for it's lacking story. Frieren doesn't have a story. It's just sentimental garbage. - The show has no action or drama. - Vague goals like "Collect more spells" "be the strongest mage" like how are you going to get there and what are you going to do? - Constant montages when that time could be spend telling a proper story. Intead you get some montage of "happy times" to trick simpletons into becoming sentimental. Nitpick: .... Frieren doesn't act her age.. She should be acting all mature and proper despite looking tiny. She is literaly an old lady. But the author wanted to entertain the simpletons so...
