Learning to master the ankle technique double bass pedals can be way too complicated. But, we can simplify this technique by focusing on two main things. If you practice these two things you will build a smooth, fast ankle technique.
You can play your double pedals comfortably at let's say 150-170 BPM using the full leg motion, but as soon as you try to use the ankle technique your double bass drumming starts to fall apart.
They become very inconsistent, or your legs aren't able to control the motion.
There's a reason for this, usually it's because we cannot physically control them, and the other is because we're trying to play faster than we're able to physically handle.
You need to remember that speed comes with control, and if you can't play this technique at a slower controlled tempo, you're going to have a hard time trying to speed things up.
In this video you're going to learn two main things to focus on when it comes to understanding why you're not able to nail the ankle technique.

I had to enforce myself to use ankle technique for all the speeds cause I had severe back pain trying to speed up my playing , and at some point I couldn’t even play at slow tempos. The good thing about using the same technique for everything (slow/fast tempos, doubles , etc) is that I get the same volume on every tempo, and of course no need to think in which technique to use in each situation. BTW , great stuff Cameron, your content is GREAT

Really like this capsule…. I really get and apply that bouncing the ball approach. The hard part is control, that’s where I am at. So true that I am trying to go faster than I can, that stumbling feel like….Ain’t gonna rest till I nail this, and I will !! Thanks to your guidance, clear and simple explanation, thx Cam!

I just picked up a used set of axis longboards, would it be a good idea to replace the springs? One feels pretty weak and one feels somewhat fine. I should probably mention that it’s also been 12 years since I’ve been behind a kit.

I can do controlled 8th notes from 170-220 on each foot but when I try to put them together it goes all flam and unison then 16ths for a bit and the. Out again, I don’t understand what else to do, each foot alone is very comfortable locking in with even beater swings but as soon as I try to put them together it’s like one foot throws off the other. Frustrated.

I wasn't sure if anyone else had the same issue that I did, but I think all you gotta do is keep trying to learn. I've been practicing double bass for 2 weeks and I still play with my feet in unison. But with practice like going from the full leg motion to ankle technique REALLY helped me, hope any of what I said was helpful. Good luck! :)

Practice integrating them using the same technique, but slower and off the pedals. A big part of why it's hard to practice ankle slowly is that the pedals fight you, and it's a lot for your ankles to deal with, so remove the pedals and slow down a bit, when you get the hang of it off the pedals go back to them.
@TheTempleman
@TheTempleman 2 жыл бұрын
@@pietzsche I’ve done a TON of off the pedal work and I can cleanly alternate at different speeds. I figured out my problem after, I needed to slightly push forward with my toes as if I was going to do a kicking motion, straightening my leg. That did something to the motion and now I can lock in with not much trouble. Having lots of fun now!

I'm a left handed drummer and left foot lead. I was getting really good at mid pace and fast tempos with double bass but recently must have strained my right calf cuz now it doesn't want to corporate at all and is sore whenever I play ☹. I would love to hear your advice on this cuz now I'm afraid I'll never be able to play double bass again like I was. I probably need just some r and r but this happened out of no where and has me pretty bummed out. I use full leg for the speeds up to 140-145 bpm and am wondering if I should even practice those now cuz I don't know if that's going to affect my right calf at all. Love your videos, your an awsome drummer and teacher!

IMO it’s better to switch before 170, more like 140-150. 170 full legs is a lot of work, and keeping it clean becomes way more challenging than ankles. Better to play with a more relaxed technique with larger margins than being at your max in a performance setting.

Hey Cameron, I've got a question. Are you supposed to be as loud with the ankle technique as with the full leg motion? Just wondering, cause I'm way "weaker" with ankle motion...

If you tap your foot on the ground as opposed to using your full leg you'll notice the sound difference. Hopefully that comparison makes sense to you!

I can't play with either leg or ankle technique from 150bpm. I've been trying for years and years, and I can't do it. I get knackered after going through all the slow tempos, and I can't play songs once I've been through my practice routine. All these techniques look fine with the feet on their own, but bring in the hands and it all falls apart. I just can't fucking do it. I'm so fucking bummed.

And it's still not 100% clear what is Ankle Motion on Double Bass. It's not something like shaking your leg like in school class when you wait when school lesson will end? Or it more like you hit your pedal with front foot? and motion is similar to toe technique? only heal is little bit off from pedal? So you shaking your leg or dribbling with toe?
@acmesalute76
@acmesalute76 2 жыл бұрын
The motion is the same as heel down but with your heel up, if that makes sense.
@CameronFleury

You're pivoting your foot from the ankle. Sit down and hold your leg off of the ground. With your heel off of the ground tap the balls of your feet on the ground.

@@CameronFleury Yes. But I should get the full leg motion down first? Some people also claim that 130/140bpm isnt really playable with ankle motion.
@CameronFleury
@CameronFleury Жыл бұрын
@@prod_adrian yes you should. The ankle technique really isn't the ideal technique for those tempos. it feels really clunky and awkward. Really difficult to pull off cleanly at 130/40 bpm. I'd suggest getting up to 160/170 BPM, then start implementing the ankle technique into your practice routine.
