To me, the determining factor to English speaking and listening is exposure. English is a compulsory subject since primary school but I had a grand total of less than 10 hours speaking the language throughtout my education. In terms of listening, English was spoken sporadically by the teachers and most of them were not good at it to begin with. Even though I have always been strong at reading and writing, I didn't manage to crack the barrier of listening and speaking until 10+ years after graudation. When I was finally put into a situation where I had to speak the language, progress came naturally. With the foundation I had, it felt almost effortless. This is eons ago. Today, with all the new technology and language platforms, students who don't have a natural exposure to English might have an easier time learning the language. Good luck to all who want to be proficient at English.

As Malaysian, we learn English pronunciation as the standard UK because Malaya was British colonies in the past. So we can listen to the British accent but localise accent is harder for young generation. Maybe the previous generation understood the accent. Like my mum's teacher in secondary school from the UK at most(Malaysia was established since 60s, several UK people in Malaysia before). She is well listening to localise accent.

Chinese is not the only language that is pronounced as "dat dat dat dat dat....". Many European languages are pronounced in that way. It's when the speaker adds in some "emotion" that the speech becomes less robotic. It's also true that when European beginners in English speak, they sound like robot as well.

I agree. Susie didn't quite master the Chinese language yet. Pinyin by itself is equivalent to simple English words with a single vowel. With four different tones, the number quadruples. However, Chinese has vowels and vowel-nasal pairs which practically sound like single vowels. There are 35 of these phonemes. Moreover, there are 21 consonants. These combine into far more different sounds at the basic level than what English can afford.
