It's just drinkable sweat. It restores electrolytes. Not really for thirst.
@damyenhockman54403 жыл бұрын
Salt is lost in sweat, and a lack of salt can decrease the rate at which neurons fire, as electrolytes, such as salt, conduct electricity when dissolved in water. Slower neurons can lower reaction speed, ability to strategize, and ability to communicate. The sugar in sports drinks provide an immediate and easily accessed form of energy. The water is the least important part of sports drinks, besides needing something to suspend the particles in so it's not dust.

Side note: Heat Stroke is something that often times can feel unnoticeable on an individual. In southwestern Arizona, the most dangerous thing you can die from during July is attending Fourth of July events and not remembering to sit in the shade every once in a while. Fire crews are always on duty during 4th of July events for reasons *other than fires caused by fireworks.* EMT's are always on active duty and, in July, are called in on heat strokes far too often. But, Adam is right. Drink when you're thirsty. If you live in an area where July temperatures reach over 120 degrees (Fahrenheit (because your pool would be over the point of boiling if it were Celcius)), remember to take frequent breaks in the shade and cool yourself down. Nothing sucks more than the *bill* of being transported to the ER with IV's stick in you. And believe me, you would prefer the IV's over the hospital bill. Especially if your insurance doesn't cover it.

A very recent study from Harvard suggests 4-6 8oz (1 cup) glasses of water a day. Of course drinking when you’re thirsty is the right way to go for most people, but for anyone with mental illnesses or developmental disorders that make it difficult to sense and correctly interpret the signals your body sends (autism and adhd are both examples of this), or if executive function problems make you forget to act on those signals (major depression is an example) it’s very easy to not REALIZE you’re thirsty, or to forget to get up and get a drink when you are. So, in that case it could be helpful to count glasses and if it’s been a few hours since you had water, have another cup.
@user-ck5rh4ky6u Жыл бұрын
I'll tell you more, most people wouldn't feel thirsty just because of all the stress we receive constantly. I might just be overwhelmed with all the things I have to do, so I wouldn't really notice I didn't eat or didn't drink or even go to the bathroom. The problem isn't dehydration, the problem are long distance problems, such as blood clogs, high pressure because blood isn't fluent enough, heart diseases as a consequence. 8 glasses of water throughout a day wouldn't ever cause u a problem. Cases Adam described here happened because athletes were drinking more than 8 glasses and in shorter span of time. And yes, it should be water, a simple water, not gatorade, coffee, tea or what have u.

Two important things from someone in Arizona: - You will absolutely have to drink more water in the Arizona desert than you had to in colder climates even if you don't go outside much, because it's just that much drier here. It's kind of a brutal adjustment for someone used to any other climate. Your thirst response will need to adapt for the first couple days. - Important though it is, more water won't save you from heatstroke if you're out in the sun all day, and heatstroke can absolutely be deadly. Stay in the shade whenever possible.

Yeah there are a lot of situations where this doesn't count. You have people who are constantly thirsty and should thus drink like 3x the amount compared to other people and people who rarely feel thirst but should really not forgot to drink water (elderly and some individuals). Some people (myself included) need to regularily drink water against migraines/headaches even if you're not feeling thirsty at that time because you'll regret it if you don't.

I know I'm chronically 'dehydrated' (not to an extreme level, but I know that I drink too little), but don't really feel it. So I guess the 8 glasses thing would work for me if I weren't so forgetful.

"Drink when you're thirsty" *...* "..." *Sometimes I don't drink water for the whole day and end up choking*
@Jakub2 Жыл бұрын
But often i find that drinking more leads to myself just feeling better overall. It's some days around 8 cups, but the amount of times i go to the toilet tells me that's probably a littlr much. It's better for the kidneys because they have more liquid to filter particles into urine, decreasing risk of kidney stones. When taking creatine and working out, it is important as more is being used for your muscles. Drinking more decreases appetite, decreasing the challenge of weight gain. There are benefits to drinking more. Just don't overdo it.
@deathofthemagi Жыл бұрын
It' also helps with weight loss. I need to lose a LOT of weight and i was struggling with eating less but i now have an alarm that goes off every hour from 9am to 9pm and i don't eat hardly any snacks any more and the same meal that that i would have eaten a week prior to starting and still feeling a bit hungry now fills me half way through it.

What was said in the video is definitely true, especially the point about drinking when you're thirsty. Important to add on is that there are folk who can have a hard time recognizing thirst. For folk like that, I've been there and what helped me a lot was getting a larger, colorful water bottle that I carry around. If it's on my desk or in my hand constantly, I find it's easier to spot and remember my own thirst. Also, the video says water a lot, but juice or soda works too. If you find those easier to drink or remember than water, any liquid is better than nothing!

I once experienced severe dehydration. It didn't happen because I wasn't drinking enough, it happened because I was incredibly sick and spent two days shitting, pissing, and vomiting out every ounce of water I put into my body. I could barely walk, I was mostly crawling around the house, and at one point I passed out in the kitchen and I was only okay because my dad was around. It was probably the worst experience of my life. The fact that people think that they're going to have an experience like that, that happened during THE WORST SICKNESS OF MY LIFE, simply by not guzzling down as much water as they physically can, is insane.
@connieburgett29947 жыл бұрын
DE Climax Exactly! I am a very stupid and forgetful person, so I forgot to drink anything for four days. I didn't feel or even think about being dehydrated until I began vomiting while moving into my new apartment. I kept telling my mom that I couldn't walk or move stuff without the literal gut-wrenching feeling, but she dismissed it. I was hospitalized, for I couldn't keep any shit down. Did you know a f*cking IV bag (just the bag, not the solution) is $250? I'm still freaked out about the whole visit; I usually just drink around a liter a day. Hate being sick, I'm sorry that you had to go through that. I'm sure you had it worse than me, I don't know why I'm "sharing my experience" here. Have a super great day!

dude same. i had gallstones last year and by the time i went to the ER they had to stick me 5 times before the iv went in i was so dehydrated. i was vomiting even though i hadn't eaten anything in at least 9 hours. not quite as bad of dehydration as you had, but the level of dehydration i had, combined with literally the worst pain ive ever had in my entire life, sustained for 48 hours, was the most awful experience i can remember. when they finally decided i needed surgery i wasnt even scared because it was either i die from surgery or they take out the problem, either way the pain would stop. dehydration is not something that happens in the absence of existing health conditions or illness unless you fail to listen to your body.

Yep. My undergraduate human anatomy teacher (the guy essentially screening students for medical school) would always go on rants about what was in beverages. He would say that sports drinks are primarily sugar water with just a touch of salts. The salts are actually lower in concentration than they are in a healthy body, so you're diluting all the excess sodium from your diet. The problem is that you don't get the other salts you need like potassium. That's why I alter my own drinks at home. I make big pitchers of Mio and add in pink himalayan salt and salt substitute which is just potassium salt. It tastes a tad salty, but if I get thirsty I can just drink regular water.

and anyone who had at least common sense knows the body isn't stupid its a very sensible piece of equipment that can measure what it needs, you know normal well functioning bodies experiment a phenomenon called "thirst" that tells you "hey moron im kind of dry" so how much water you need? maybe as much as your body(yeah that old thing that has been since the dawn of the man to keep you alive) tells you, in the case your body isnt working correctly filling with so much water can damage it too, i mean you took biology class so im sure you know what happens to your cells if you go too crazy on your H2O
@ibanez14037 жыл бұрын
Obviously over consumption of water is a whole different game ,however dehydration occurs way more frequently then over hydration in the real world, Why or how you may ask ? Because the body mistakes the signal of being thirsty with being hungry and most cases people will eat instead of drinking a glass of water because they think they feel hungry. By the time you're thirsty you''re already lacking fluids. There's quite a difference between surviving like our ancestors did and being healthy. The average life expectancy from those days isn't even comparable to today's and we have much more diseases and antibiotic resistant bacteria.

@MrAnonymus237 жыл бұрын
A protein shake BEFORE a workout full of BCAAs will actually help you more as protein takes about an hour per 10g to absorb. Now, BCAAs, or Base Chain Amino Acids get sucked up quick. A post workout shake helps your body with Protein Synthesis and recover faster because Whey Protein is the fastest protein your body can absorb, the only thing faster is straight up amino acids. I have both a pre and post workout shake cause I lift heavy and very often following a golden age bodybuilding style routine of two body parts a day: Chest and back, Legs, arms and shoulder. I do this six days a week and train to near failure, you might not train as hard or often so the best thing I can recommend that'll save you money is have a good shake prior, or do what I do and have both prior and after, or mix some BCAAs into your water 30 minutes beforehand to get them in your system quick. Oh, and you do wanna drink water if you're a very active person or train hard cause you will get cramps, I've had them, not fun when using a leg press machine with 8 45s and still have 5 more reps to go. Hope this helps my friend. Of course like they said, don't over hydrate, but do drink cause oxygen in your muscles while training is very VERY good.
@rangaros45977 жыл бұрын
You do know a lot of the information out there about fitness is just wrong and is normally just rumors spread through gyms/misinformation/VERY little actual study on it. You can just apply supplements to this video instead of water and it works exactly the same, the whole point is to make you believe they work and waste your money on them.
@MrAnonymus237 жыл бұрын
Rangaros It's different per person, if your goal is muscle growth and development then supplementing with BCAAs and Protein is a must, no matter how much chicken you eat the body just won't absorb the protein as fast as say Whey Protein Isolate, and Amino Acids get sucked up really quick, so while a post work shake is a good thing, a pre workout shake will help, cause it takes time for your body to absorb the Amino Acids and proteins, and taking it before means that you'll get those Proteins and Amino Acids right when you need them most. You can search all this up this isn't bro science it's fact, as well as years working out and finding out what works and what doesn't.

+Robot404 so water intoxication is where the stomach, unable to process any more water (I think the threshold is about 8L), starts offloading pure water into the bloodstream, to get more space to process the water. When this occurs in high amounts the now water rich blood in the brain swells brain cells, therefor causing the tissue to swell. This swelling against the hard skull casing bruises the brain causing hemorrhaging, as well as a brutally painful death with immense pressure on the skull. It is widely considered one of the worst deaths possible, contrasted to drowning, one of the more pleasant.

maybe you should ruin the wage gap. you guys could make a difference in informing the masses about the lie of the wage gap.

Don't get it twisted, C.H. are still card carrying members in The Cult of Feminism. They're about the truth only when it's Appoved Truth™.

With how misinforming this video is, and how much some of CollegeHumour's videos, as joked about themselves, make people think of Buzzfeed.. CollegeHumour would most likely enforce the lie.

I've been in the ER 6 with dehydration, i need reminders to drink because i don't drink when im thirsty. I normally drink less than 3 cups a day unless im reminded. It's very dangerous for me because most of the time when i pass out (from dehydration) i hit my head

Nice one! But what sadly was missing: Thrist rule does not neccessary work if you old, a child (not really sure about this one, read it one time) or very focused on something. Then you should drink without thrist.

As a cross country runner, I can assure you that having anything less than 60oz of water on an active day, especially a meet day is absolute death...

In terms of those who don't vigorously exercise, then this is all correct. However, people like me who run in excess of 5+ miles a day, from straight runs to split repeats at race pace, 8 glasses should be a minimum by 2pm.

Yes people who exercise should be drinking upwards of a gallon a day

This video also doesn't apply in some cases if you're using drinks that "dehydrate" you such as coffee and soda. I've gone to the ER due to Vision/Hearing loss caused by dehydration after a day of only eating very salty potato chips and coffee. Thirst is only so accurate and there's ways you can fool it.

So you're telling us you drink stuff before knowing beforehand it's a dehydrating drink? That's like saying, this first aid kit only applies in some cases. I used this rust covered bandage i found on the ground somewhere and now i got a huge infection. Also i find it hard to believe you had to go to the ER after "a day" of eating chips and drinking coffee. Seems to me you just live an unhealthy lifestyle in general and that one day just pushed it over the edge.
