I have a beta-AR that's one of my most prized possession when it comes to outdoor gear. I used it for five years, in the city as well as in the mountains, and it's still going strong. It lost the water-repellant surface treatement but not a drop passes through the membrane. Expensive, but you get what you pay for. would recommend.
@freb
@freb 5 жыл бұрын
the dwr coating is used to help on the breathability of the gore-tex membrane. If the nylon is soaked it wont evacuate sweat ;) So you just need to wash it as instructed and you can spray it with the product that arc'teryx or gore-tex recommend! It will feel like new!
@dankmemer2774
@dankmemer2774 4 жыл бұрын
Yea, just cuz the water stops bouncing off of it, doesn’t mean its compromised. That’s one of the biggest difference between waterproof & water resistant/repellant. Even after the dwr wears off, a waterproof garment will still keep u dry whereas a water resistant garment would be compromised as it relies solely on the dwr.

If you look on the Beta AR product page from the manufacturer you can see by the customer reviews that this model has huge quality issues. The glue of the seams comes of quickly and the the jacket falls literally apart just after short usage. Given the price that's the reason why I refrained from buying it. Such a high end product should last a life time and not just two years.

@@benjamins_eye662 I had a Beta AR I bought in 2011 and it only started to delaminate in 2020. I used it a fair amount but sent it to Arcteryx for repair. i've bought the Arcteryx Alpha FL jacket. The main zipper slider broke on the ice climbing multi-pitch (first use), forcing me to take off the gloves and play with fingernails every time i had to open-close the jacket, that's far from pleasant when you want to keep your hands warm or you need to close the jacket fast due to snow and ice that's falling from above. For some reason Arc'teryx decided to use super weak YKK slider for the main zipper on all of their Alpha jackets. They need to change it since i'm not the only one that have experienced this malfuncion. I'm also really happy that it broke during the casual weekend climbing instead of some more serious expedition.

OK... this biggest question I have is deciding which to get for Trekking long distances (not climbing) with possible fowl weather like Northern Sweden, Finland or high altitudes like 14K feet +; which line do you choose? Especially if you're hiking all day, where you need good storm protection, but very breathable and durable because of wearing a pack. Alpha, Beta, Zeta? AR or FL? :( I wish I could ask the ArcTeryx rep this question. Thoughts...

@oliverhawkins3098
@oliverhawkins3098 4 жыл бұрын
I have both the Beta SV and the Alpha Gen 2. Beta SV is n80p-x and the Gen 2 is 45r-x (ripstop) for the body and n30p for the hood. The Alpha SV is 100p-X. So the Beta and Alpha SVs are tougher but not ripstop. The Gen 2 is great IF you are wearing it over combat gear or body armor or have the arms of a body builder. The arms are big enough to put my legs in FYI. You have to buy Arcteryx LEAF gear through a different outfitter. I used US Elite Gear.

I have the Alpha SV (L) for the days when it is extremely wet and windy, but not cold enough to need more than a lighter weight (Mammut Broad Peak) puffy. For colder days I have a Mammut Meron HS (XL) that has a more room for layering. For very cold days I have a Beta SV (XL) that fits over a fleece and belay jacket. My last trip to the UK in winter I only took the Alpha because I really don't need much insulation for the relatively warm UK winters.

@richarde1355
@richarde1355 3 жыл бұрын
The Zeta LT is the light version (second heaviest in the Zeta line), with the Zeta being designed for hiking and all around activities. Many, if not most, Arcteryx waterproof jackets have hoods designed to fit helmets. The Zeta hood is a “regular” hood, not necessarily designed to fit over a hood. That is a good thing (smaller hood) for folks who don’t participate in or expect to use the jacket conditions where helmets are worn.

I get a ton of use out of my Zeta LT shell. It’s light so it’s great for hiking, I use it for skiing, and although I prefer leathers if I think it might rain I will wear it motorcycling. In fact it’s great for motorcycling because sometimes u just want something light and breathable that is also windproof, depending on the temp. Obviously it’s a great everyday rain jacket too. If I put a puffer on underneath it can handle pretty much the coldest weather Chicago has to offer. That’s why I don’t mind the high price for a shell, as it can replace so many other jackets if u wanted it to.

In general the face fabric is thicker on the civilian clothing from 40p-X Beta AR to 100p-X on the Alpha SV vs 45r-X on the LEAF but the LEAF stuff is ripstop and designed to be worn over body armor so the fit, especially in the arms is different (way bigger)

Informative video. A few things they didn't say: If you think you can't afford any Arc'teryx, they also have an outlet page, take a look at it. Gore Tex also exists in many quality rival brands that aren't as expensive. Arc'teryx is also almost always cut with an athletic build. So if you're thin it fits good. If you're "normal" it may fit okay, if a little snug. If you're heavy, you're going to be a lot better off going for a brand like Columbia Sportswear, The North Face, or others. Their product line is not quite the build quality, not built as dedicated to highly technical wear, but likely to work well for you and save you some money.

Because if you're into different disciplines and doing them during different times of year, it would be beneficial to have different jackets that are more suited for that specific condition. I have an alpha sv for skiing/winter hiking during harsh conditions. I like how roomy it is at the shoulders, and the thick 100D nylon face fabric means I can bushwack with 0 fears of tearing the jacket. In the summer, i prefer using the Beta SL hybrid because its lightweight, packable, and much more breathable than the Gore Pro membrane. Then there are the midlayers and parkas. Synthetic parka for when expect it to be wet and cold, like shoulder season hikes, and then I'll have a down parka for things like winter camping, where i'm mostly using it during static phases and its cold enough that there won't be rain which would diminish the capabilities of down. The more you know.

I don't know if these numbers are as detailed as you want to know, but basically, their gear can be differentiated in the thickness of the external fabric (NP-40, NP-80, NP-100, NP-115) and the type of Goretex membrane used (GORETEX PRO, GORETEX, GORETEX PACLITE). All the other differences are more use and design-oriented.

@@ANML I ended up getting the Beta SV Jacket and Bib-Pant shells. I will use them in the forest, so I figure that the thicker outer fabric will help protect them from getting shredded by the brush.

Nice products just in my opinion it’s overpriced even for technical gear. Plus the warranty should be lifetime like Patagonia and outdoor research.

It's a lot easier to understand than most people think. Lets just say Alpha SV is number 1, and Alpha AR is number 2 on the activity intensity ladder. When you're deciding which to buy, you have to ask yourself, is there a pontenial I will be doing this Alpha activity in an SV enviroment. If the answer is yes, then buy the Alpha SV and don't look back, because the SV will cover the AR category as well. All you have to do is open up some zippers, and you can cool yourself down should you find yourself in less severe conditions. Now, if you ask yourself the same question and your answer is you're not going to be in any SV weather conditons then you buy the AR. If you buy the AR, and one day you find yourself in a SV weather condition then you're just shit-outta-luck, Shirly. The worlds hates you! ;) If light weight is your main focus, and you believe you're not going to be in a SV weather condition then buy LT, and don't look back. We all need to get away from wanting to buy the best to, instead, buying what we can afford, and what suits are purpose.

I never use my Alpha SV jacket, or my Beta AR pants. Why? They are heavy and cumbersome for something that just hangs out in the bottom of my pack. I finally purchased some very lightweight shells that pack up small and are super light. If I knew I was going to be standing under a waterfall all day, sure, I would wear them, but for bringing them along just to bring them along seems stupid. I live in the PNW and it rains all the time, they are like wearing a tent. After climbing in the Alps and seeing the European mindset of going fast and light. I haven't looked back and kinda feel that the heavier gear is kind of a dinosaur way of thinking. They are beautiful pieces and do what they are intended to do, but I am not going to be climbing with them unless I know the weather is going to be absolute shit and to be honest, I really try to stay out of weather like that, I don't enjoy it.

I wish they made stuff for people over 5'10" and 150 lbs. It's ridiculous! I couldn't wear the LEAF gear they tried to issue when I was active duty and can't as a civilian either. They need to take the LE part out period. No chip can wear that shit either.

Buy an Norröna Falketind Gore-Tex jacket. It last the rest of your skiing career. It's a great quality and fits like a glove. It's a Norwegian brand. It's around 400 dollar.
