Why you don’t want your webcam at eye level! Virtual Presentation Tips

This was an epic fail.... After years of doing virtual presentations and interviews with my webcam on top of my monitor I decided to change it up!
I put the webcam on a tripod so that I could set it directly in front of the video I’m recording or live streaming so it was at eye level and I was looking thru the camera.
Well that was a mistake especially when using zooms and Prezi video as I naturally started moving my eyes around the tripod and looking at the other videos as hard as I tried not to.
For your next virtual event presentation or video call you should yes look into the camera but don’t over do it.
Video created with GoPro Max 360!

I was thinking of doing the exact same thing. Thank you for saving me the money and fail. Wish there was a better way though.

Thank you for the review, Brian A teleprompter is a game-changer for me, I mirror-flip my Slides using ppt mirror app with bullet points for my iPad and use them in a teleprompter to lead me while I speak so that I keep the conversation on target without reading the script to keep eye contact with Audience.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Attach it to the top of the monitor. Great video, Brian.

Oh wow just saw you were on the 360 cam. Neat, worked well.

More important in your presentation would be some sound treatment. That room is really echo'ey. I have the same issue and I put a big mousepad on my desk and stuffed cheap foam behind my monitor and it helped. But yea, I struggle with the same thing. I use continuity cam on top of my monitor on my laptop and slightly covering the bottom of my 32" screen which is just slightly above that. Not perfect but helps. I wish there was a better solution. Sometimes I use my Sony A7IV and it really is obtrusive.

Why not put the webcam w/ tripod between the screens, at eye level, and set your video monitor window adjacent to it? Seems this would do the same thing as what you suggest, only better. I do a LOT of videoconferences, as I work from home, and I find it really distracting to watch somebody looking “just off camera”, above their camera’s focus, when they speak, which is what you get with a camera atop a screen. Looks more natural looking slightly off to the side, which is why cue cards appear next to a camera, and not under or over a camera.

Thank you, guy, for your insights, I'm trying to solve the same issue. Because having a gear in front of me, like a tripod leads to me watching my classes turned by chick to web-cam

Title should be, "Why You Don't Want to Position your Camera in Front of Your Monitors". Eye height = good.

Yeh but if you attach the webcam to the top of your monitor, it looks like you're being filmed from above and that you're looking up at the camera. Even if you look directly into the camera while it's on your monitor, it still looks like you're looking upwards, which doesn't look great in my opinion. I would like to find a solution to this if possible. I've tried putting my webcam at eye level on a tripod, but as you say, the camera then blocks part of the screen. You'd have thought webcam makers would've come up with a solution to this problem by now!

Neil Kendal, What do you think about using PowerPoint in a teleprompter with bullet points? you speak confidently without reading a script to maintain eye contact with the viewer. but you would have to mirror-flip the slides.

@@andrieslee1716 I've never tried that. How can you use a teleprompter without reading a script? I thought that's the point of using a teleprompter? And what sort of teleprompter? A software programme, or an online one? How can you maintain with the viewer if you're reading off the screen and not looking into the camera? Doesn't make sense.
