How long does it take you to mix a song? What slows you down? I'd love to know

It always takes me weeks to mix a song and I’m still often unsure of my final decision. I will generally do a couple of hours initially and revisit with the odd hour here 'n there. I would say primarily the struggle is because I write, record and mix my own music therefore I lack impartiality and perspective. Secondly my mixes take weeks if not months to, 'finish' because I lack confidence and experience. However, after following a masterclass, two of your in-depth courses plus free KZfaq tips Sara I am slowly learning and getting better 🙂❤️

I mix a song in 2-3 days, though the songs I mix usually have 80+ tracks😅 my main issue is that I just can't really hear what I'm doing after 3-4 hours of mixing. So instead of trying to force myself to push trough and then just having to redo half of the day's work the next day, I just learned when to stop. Not sure anything can really fix ear fatigue.

Been mixing over 10 years, and id say in my worst period i spent over 1 month, and in my best period bout 3 days which is were im at today. My advice would be: In an optimal situation is great to have pre-listened to Samples & Synth Presets thats works well with each other before even starting the mix. This can be achieved by mono-ing the channels towards each other. Then put all the sounds in one single library, before you start mix the song. Ithink this will help your volune mix as well as EQ-mix & the whole SchaBang! Just telling the two cents of my philosophy.

My only concern with mixing quickly (at this stage in my experience) is I make generic decisions like hi passing anything that isn't kick or bass, emphasising the most prominent EQ band of each track. Sometimes I end up with mush. Same goes for trying to compress/saturate quickly.

Tracking and editing my songs consume most of my time. Chasing perfection in the mixing process goes quicker and is more fun, but it all takes months, start to finish.
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing Ай бұрын
In that learning context, don't expect perfection, get as close as you can and accept the imperfections. Move on to the next mix!

Like a weight lifter I do warm up sets before mixing. I have some songs I love the sound of and I listen to them before every session. I found I need to do this every once and a while because if I hear something long enough it becomes right even if it has issues so the quicker you fix issues the less likely I am to grow to except it.

I got stuck for years trying to fix mixes I'd mixed years ago. I think the most important thing when mixing is find a workflow that works from start to finish and keep doing it to new songs, not tracks you've already mixed. Love your work, Sara. Keep going.

Totally agree! It's fine to call it a day if you've done as much as you can do, even if it's not perfect. Thanks!

I missed you! does those 4/6 hours include setting up a track upon receiving it and balancing? When do you start mixing
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing Ай бұрын
Thanks Jackie. That is a REALLY good question! Pro mixers often have an assistant to do all the prep so..I would think a four hour mix MUST be prepped beforehand. Plus, it depends how much work the producer has done pre-mix. This is why, I think it doesn't serve you to aim for such short time scales, especially if you will feel bad for missing that target.

I'm at the point where I know which tools I need and rarely second guess choices or spend time faffing over miniscule settings, but the mix I just finished took about 12hrs before mastering. Probably half of that was spent editing. It's a pop-metal type thing, I sample replaced the kick, heavily edited the bass and two rhythm guitar tracks (note by note in places), and lots of work on tuning and automating vocals (about a dozen individual tracks). Some of this is performance-related, but it's also fairly typical for the genre I think. I know lots of pro mixers have assistants do the editing, but do you know how long they would usually spend on that, out of interest? One thing I've learnt to keep the song fresh in my ears when actually starting the mix is to edit on a pair of cheap earbuds! That way I still get the 'first playthrough' sound when switching to monitors

Great video! BUT....I have to say, that it starts BEFORE the mix, in the engineering stage...., and like mark knopfler said.... "you cant polish muck"..., so my approach to these things, is to get at good take....., with the stems recorded properly..., then the mixing is a LOT easier...getting the balance right, and.just getting the sparkle and the sugarcoating on things....

Totally agree! 👍🏻👍🏻 Just... tracks, not "stems". Stems only come to exist at (ot rather after) the mixing stage.
