I didn't know about the conditional trig for fills, that's a very interesting feature. In addition to using only one pattern for your drums and fills, it also has the advantage of if you're live jamming and thinking "OH I WANT A FILL" but too late as you're already in the bar/pattern and havint to wait for another "loop" like on most grooveboxes, well here hit the fill button and it still works as it's part of the pattern. Defo wish more grooveboxes had that !
@FreeBeat2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's like an instant pattern switch but even cooler, because you can dictate how the fill notes overlay the current pattern! Then you can put conditional triggers on other steps that correlate to what the The steps that are being triggered by the fill button are doing, it gets out of control pretty fast!

I have a digitone already and I’m going to compliment it with the cycles. Just ordered one. I love drums on digitone, but it takes up Atleast 2 precious voices to get some good percussion that cut through the whole mix. Now I can leave my all my voices for digitone’s arps, pads, bass and lead sounds, while also learning how to do some serious performance on drums using the cycles! How awesome!

I've really enjoyed all of your videos about Cycles and appreciate the time that goes into them. Years ago I really wanted a yamaha dx 200 but never found one (or never at a reasonable price) so Cycles is super interesting to me and to get my hands on an elektron sequencer would be awesome too (i have used an mpc for years for sequencing). That being said, I can't spend the money sigh. So I'm hoping with everyone buying these now at least some people are going to decide they aren't really what they wanted and they end up on ebay even cheaper at some point. Anyway thanks for another video making me want this hahaha!

I agree it's a steal, however, as an owner of a Digitone, there's no getting away the fact that the Digitone SOUNDS so much better. Where the m:c sounds like an old 16bit video game sometimes, the Digitone just manages to sound more deep, sonically rich and (subjectively) more beautiful. Not sure if it warrants a more than 2X price tag though, that depends on your intended use.

Spent some time with one last night. Digging it. It and the Sonicware Liven XFM are pretty fun devices. It's tough to get really awesome pad sounds with both, though... because of the lack of the attack parameter here, and the layers/textures in general. The cold "metal" sounding drums are an acquired taste, for sure. Not usually my thing. But I had some fun messing around with the patterns for a bit. Still prefer my Model:Samples, though... for more sound-sculpting flexibility.... I suppose both of them pair nicely together. I get stuck with the mindset of doing stuff in the box, though... the free FM plugins out there (including Dexed) are really hard to beat. The strength with the Models is certainly the chance/condition stuff, though. Even if you don't use the built-in sounds. But I hate how each track is only monophonic. Such a huge price increase from this, to the Digitone, and the M:S to the Digitakt. Anyone reading this curious about how they compare--- as far as I know, the Digitakt STILL does not let you do different multipliers for the track pattern rate ("scale"). The M:S and the M:C easily let you set 1/2x, 1/3x, 2x, 1x, etc. And I THINK you can do different lengths for each track with the Digitakt, but come to think of it, I don't think you can. I think everything has to be the same length. Probably an easy fix with firmware, though... but Elektron's yet to do that. Digitone-- so, so expensive for what it does... no sample playback... JUST the internal FM engine... Ugh, the options / thoughts / ADHD always makes my head spin..... Back to the Cycles-- yes, I had some fun with it. The stock patterns are pretty impressive, overall. Thought the chord track would be really limited, but you can tweak the sound pretty nicely... so in essence, 5 monophonic tracks plus a chord track that can do up to 5 notes on it... pretty nice thing. Gotta spend a little more time with the Cycles... man, if Elektron could do like "Model:SampleSynth"... at a price point a little less than the Digi-series... think of how cool that would be. Sampler, sample player, FM synth or analog modeling... with the same design as the first two... just the "big brother" version (at $600 or so)... maybe some upgraded track pads... and at least ONE polyphonic track? That would rule. Find the need and fill it, Elektron............. :)
@FreeBeat2 жыл бұрын
It's funny you mention the Digitone line that because it's probably at the top of my list now for devices I'd like to pick up 😂 I definitely recommend spending some more time with the Model:Cycles though, it is deceptively deep. Once you get into things like using pad velocity to modulate parameters it gets pretty wild!

I’ve been dying to play with a grove box, I have zero experience with them but I can really see myself getting sucked in. I wrote by first little bit of song with Garage Band yesterday though and it’s so easy now that I finally figured out how to use it.

How much of a learning curve is there for someone who's never used one of these before? Which one has better all around sounds the Samples or Cycles?
@FreeBeat2 жыл бұрын
There's a little bit of a learning curve, however getting a basic groove down isn't that bad once you understand a few key concepts. Sound wise it's completely up to you. The samples can sound like whatever you want it to, but you have to load in the samples via USB. The cycles has a super percussive and metallic FM tinge to it, which I'm really into, but other people can't stand, so it's completely personal preference. Thanks for watching!

I recently bought a used model samples and I love it! but this sale is tempting me to pick up a model cycles as well. Would you say that the two boxes work well together? or would I be better off picking up a Volca FM and controlling it with the model:sample’s sequencer?
@FreeBeat2 жыл бұрын
It really depends on what you want. The volca FM it's going to be far easier to dial in specific synth patches on. The cycles is focused a lot more on percussive sounds, and while it can be a very powerful synth, I don't think it will stack up to the FM if that's what you're after. That being said, the cycles walks all over the FM when it comes to drums.

Ummmm NO! My 6 operator PreenFM2 for $190 brand new vs 4 operator M:C was a NO BRAINER especially as I already had the Mystical Elektron Sequencer in the form of a Digitakt. They need a Digitakt MK2 that uses ALL 16 tracks instead of 8 and 8 for external gear. Oh yeah my Boutique made PreenFM2 is also built like a TANK!!! And best of all, you just drag and drop Yamaha DX7 patches onto it and they work perfect. I had the Model Sample it was fun, the Digitakt CRUSHES it. Yes it is almost triple the price………….. Now things take a WEIRD left turn, I am in middle of trading away my Digitakt for some goodies and some cash…… is it due to lacking? No not really. I bought the ITTY BITTY 1010Music Blackbox Studio and it is NOT as powerful a sequencer as the Digitakt but the size and weight and 16 full tracks plus ability to use my MPC MultiSamples made it my EDC and the poor Digitakt just sits on my shelf in its case. The MC and MS for $600 is a pretty hot combo tho and gives you 12 tracks if I’m not mistaken tho the Dual LFO’s of Digitakt are SWEET! Currently staring longingly at the Generative NDLR and seeking out plugins that can do similar things like Cthulhu, Captain plugin, Scaler , Euclidean sequencers.

@@FreeBeat love the channel man. Keep up the good work. I had the same issue with the Digitone, low track count for ALOT of $$$ and only a 4 operator FM Synth. Granted 98% of the world won’t know the difference in a song with a 4 operator FM Synth Vs a 6 Operator FM Synth. I just have a HUGE library pf DX7 patches and PreenFM2 being able to use direct just blew my mind. If you drop it to 4 operator mode it’s a 14 voice polyphonic unit. 8 voice in 6 operator mode. Unlike most “Boutique” gear where they go oh yeah well we buy parts in low numbers and theres only a small crew thats why it is so EXPENSIVE I think the PreenFM2 is a 1 man operation and he is selling not for just a GOOD price but at a GREAT VALUE. I’d HAD a Yamaha Reface DX. HATED the keyboard but wanted a hardware FM Synth. Soon as I got the PreenFM2 I sold that puppy :) Now off to Ebay to hunt for sub $200 MC and MS hehehe
