Ever gone on a trek and thought, "I can't go on any more! I could really use another leg!" or maybe, "Oh my God my bag is heavy! Can someone please share this load with me?" Those are just a few of the things a trekking pole does. A trekking pole is one of THE most useful equipment ever made in the world of trekking. It helps you while ascending or descending, while walking on rough terrain and is ever-so-useful while walking on snow. In this episode, Swathi tells you more about why you need a trekking pole and explains the components and fundamentals of using one.
Indiahikes will tell you everything about trekking poles, about why you need them, how to use them, and how you can preserve them. Here are some articles on our website that are related to trekking poles. This video will tell you about how you can pack trekking poles with ease.

Accurate, articulate information. Well done. I would respectfully add that while you are demonstrating a purchased and very fine walking staff, a person can also harvest a stick of correct length and diameter and use it just as well. I have half a dozen such staffs, some short (125 cm) and some long (180 cm) depending on the nature of the terrain. I use long ones in rough circumstances where I need support on steep hills or crossing water, I use the short ones on well maintained trails. thanks for your vid

Hi Swathi, I'm a begginer & look forward to trek in the kalsa region of Karnataka. Is it advisable to use a trekking pole in that as well; considering stony terrain and no weight on the back.

Hi Swathi, many thanks for all the helpful videos and articles! I am wondering whether 2 poles would be more helpful at all? I read some articles and there seems to be mixed opinions. I'll be going on the sandakphu trek later this year. thanks again :)

Hi Bageshri you don't really need two poles on a trek. I find that one pole is comfortable enough and serves the purpose of saving my energy, and giving me balance and stability. So just go for one pole. Two poles takes a long time getting used to. And on rough terrain like in the Indian Himalayas, it's good to have one hand free in case you need to hold onto roots, or rocks.

I had a question about choosing a trekking pole. Quechua has a few different ones (Forclaz 100 to Forclaz 500). Apart from the weight, how are these poles different and what should one look for while choosing one?

+Shaunak Modi You should check the length of the pole. It should suit your height. It should be at least a minimum length of 130-135 cm. Second, it should have an anti-shock feature. Ask the person at the store to show you anti-shock feature. (He'll probably dismantle the pole and show you.) Third, look out for the basket and the rubber tip. Only after all this, go by the weight. Also, just learn how to maintain the pole after buying it, because that is also important! Indiahikes has trekking poles that you can order online and buy. Just write to support@indiahikes.in about it and we'll get back to you! :)

I have a general feeling that I would like to keep my hands free during a moderate trek. Would a trekking pole act as a deterrent if I am not used to carrying one around?Is it an absolute necessity on such treks?
@swathichatrapathy9347
@swathichatrapathy9347 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Sudipto, it is not an absolute necessity. But it makes your ascending and descending a LOT easier. What you can do is try using a sturdy stick and see how you like it. And then decide on whether you want a pole or not. :)

Can we carry trekking pole on flight in checked-in baggage?
@Indiahikes

Yes, you can. Pack it inside your backpack, with some cushioning at the pointed end. This will ensure it doesn’t tear your backpack and is safe while baggage handling.
