What's your everyday camera??

Bought myself a Ricoh GR IIIx earlier this year because I hate taking photos on my phone, and I’d always keep the larger camera in the bag. Best decision I made in a long time. Most of my favorite images from this year were taken with the Ricoh. This video is truly great advice, and I feel like I was in the same mindset as you. Having something simple to take every day makes me take photos that I’d never take with a larger camera, and that I couldn’t achieve with a phone.

@@willsharber Thank you so much Will 👍 I'm glad it's not just me that hates taking photos on their phone!! I am slightly tempted by the GR IIIx because of it's truly compact size. Might give one a try over the next few months. Thanks for being here, much appreciated 😃

I always take two cameras with me. I got 3 that I take with me outside, two X-T5 and one 50S II. I almost always take a combination of two of them with me every time I go out (sometimes I only take the GFX). I know it’s not as light a load out as yours, but I’m just used to a messenger bag with two cameras in it now. Only time I don’t take any camera is when I go to the store that is right outside my apartment.

I recently got the Sony a7C II (paired with a Samyang 24mm f2.8) and the body has some pretty decent "film simulations" similar to Fujifilm, called "creative looks" which I know some people would shake their head and say "real photographers never use those" 🙄. But hold up - they're not bad! I've shot manually and post-processed for almost two decades now-I've "earned the right" to shoot jpgs with film simulations if it brings me joy. I'm in that phase of life where I don't want to spend time editing my photos - I want to like what I see through the EVF and move on 🤷‍♀ that's what everyday photography is to me-basically a phone camera workflow but with a more enjoyable physical user experience

Exactly - just do what makes you happy!! The snobbery in photography leaves me shaking my head at times, if people want to shoot jpg then why not?! I knew someone would bring up phone cameras, and I nearly spoken about it. They don't work for me for the exact reason you say - user experience! Thanks for watching :)

Great advice. I’ve been taking photos since the 1960s when I was a lad and joined the camera club at my secondary school when I was 12 in 1971. When your pocket money was spent on film, developing chemicals and paper, you quickly learned when not to press the button. My best camera which I still own was my Minox GT. Pull the lens out, think about the focus distance needed, assess whether you needed 2x exposure and often put it on a wall as if forms a great stable little base. From 1984 it’s now 40 yrs old. The lens is amazing. As you said it’s the image history that matters. I think back to when my son was very young, when I met my wife, our trips to France, boating on the Thames it’s also gone around the world as a fun back up to MF gear including Fuji 6x9. I always use/d Fuji film mainly Velvia and Provia. However, ergonomically if I had to name the best camera to use, whilst being simple to master it’s my EOS 1 with its battery grip. A thing of beauty, still in perfect condition 35 yrs on. I bought ban ex demo 80 to 200 2.8L, then a 20 to 35 2.8L in the late 1980s. It’s all built to last and the lenses still work well with my 5D mk 3. I did get the 24 to 105 f4 L with the 5D as an exit deal. It was £2k new and they threw in a manfrotto tripod, a bag and some cards. I used that as I needed to make some interview films. It paid for itself in 2 days back in 2015. Yes it is superb, but I’m still debating what to take in May on a trip of a lifetime - 3 weeks in China with a lot of touring. The pro stuff, my great little EOSM5 kit, or maybe go simple and get the great little Sony compact that does it all and fits in my pocket. It’s crazy expensive at about £1100. What would you do?

I carry my X100V everywhere, but living in the highlands, I mainly end up shooting landscapes, as opposed to it’s perhaps more usual street photography habitat. I’m glad to see another landscape photographer enjoying this wonderful piece of kit. Mine is fitted almost permanently with the excellent wide angle adapter and a wee circular polariser. It’s easy to remove and pop in a pocket if necessary, and doesn’t feel like a ‘lens’. I love this set-up, limitations and all. So much so, that I’ve ditched my DSLR and holy trinity of lenses - they just didn’t get a look in.

Hi Rick - I'm an amateur who broke open his piggy bank to get the Z9 but just recently decided to buy a used Z50 as my everyday/holiday camera with the 16-50 zoom. Bonus is I can still use my 14-30 F4, 24-120 F4 and 100-400 from the Z9 kit, but you're right - it's a pleasure to have a camera small and light enough to go in a pocket to take anywhere without using a backpack!

Rick, I just subscribed to your channel. I love the subjects you are covering. You are talking to me directly. Thank you. I need to do a location street type shoot. I am familiar with both Fuji X100 and the Ricoh GR line but did not want to get another camera. For the past week or so, I have been thinking about getting a pancake lens for my Sony A7RIV to make it a stealth street camera. All my lenses are zooms and they stick out like a sore thumb. There are no true pancake lenses for Sony as they were for my Pentax system. Their 40mm f2.8 is a true package lens. I will give it some more thought.

Another great video Rick. I’d like to try this camera esp as it has built-in flash but with another hopefully being launched next year will wait and get to try one out in a shop. Will be interesting to see how the used price changes when the new one arrives. Currently I pack a Nikon Z7 with a Z26mm in a bum bag when I want to travel light. In APSC mode it gives 39mm as well and still room for more digital zooming in post. For composition esp architecture I shoot in RAW & jpeg and set the camera to mono B&W. So the monitor, viewfinder & jpegs are B&W but the RAW of course are in colour. I create A3 wall calendars for a vintage steam railway station and even iPhone images printed at A4 are superb and heartily satisfying when seen printed & hung on people’s walls. Life can be shorter than you assume so do what you enjoy doing!

Thank you for a refreshing video and pointing out topics that are usually under the radar. Personally the X100 series would be a bit too limiting to me. I’m not thinking about all the technical parameters of shooting but just enjoy the experience of photography. I definitely play more and as you say, shoot more because it is right at hand. I bought it used with the 50mm tcl ( I got a great deal !!) I enjoy the film simulations and have been shooting a lot of multiple exposures. I shoot for me. Lots more to work on. I haven’t quite got to the point of traveling with just the X100v yet. I get FOMO especially on the telephoto end. I still love my Nikon ❤ Thanks for this video.

Good video and it's on of the reasons why I have a variety of cameras covering full frame, APSC and micro 4/3. Many people will say that full frame is the way to go and even though I have full frame cameras from Panasonic, Pentax and Nikon ,they can't match size with a Fujifilm XT3 or XT5 or one of my Olympus OMD 1MKIII or EM5 MKIII with a small Olympus or Panasonic prime lenses, the OMD 1MKIII with the 12-40 f2.8 is a camera setup that is compact enough and very versatile for photographing different subjects.

Some wise words there Rick. I bought myself a used RX100 in the summer and got into the habit of taking it with me most places. I tend to do long hikes and it’s perfect for those. Yes, it has its limitations compared to my full frame camera, but fitting a 400g camera with a 24-200mm reach in my pocket often outweighs its limitations. Glad you’re getting the photography bug back again

The key with recipes is to pick a specific color one, and a black and white one for *at least a month* That’s how you can lock in and create “your look”. I personally use a Portra recipe based off classic chrome for my people photos, a Velvia variant for landscapes, an Eterna one for night shots, and a Tri-X recipe based off Acros-Y for my black and white work.

After contemplating buying both I decided to take just the Q3 and let the next person on the waiting list get the Fuji. Not looked back, on wish the Leica had the Fuji recipes

I still use my X100S (2014 I think) quite regularly. It often misses focus but I really do like the "look" of the photos is produces. I've got a A2 print on the wall I love from this camera which is a regular reminder to me that 16mp is often more than enough for printing. I didn;t realise the X100V was their most recent iteration. Mine looks to be worth £500 still even though its near 10 years old. Madness. I see a few people saying they carry a XT3 or XT4 as their day to day. For me, as a XT2 users, that still gives me the problem you mentioned about choice of lens, whether to take filters, a tripod etc etc. So the X100S takes that problem away. Very good point you made about that. Good work again on the video.

A lot of good and true (according to me) things in this video. The fact that you need to love your camera to use it, the fact that the camera for filming may be not the best for doing pictures and the interest for a day to day camera that you bring everywhere … without a bag. I can only agree to this as I applied it to myself. I got a Leica Q for d2d, à gh5 for filming and a Nikon z7 with z zoom and afs prime lenses and this fits perfectly to me. All this stuff is second hand usually at half of the price from new (sometimes more) because I do think that new gear is far too expensive. The fact that Canon CEO explains that in 2022 they sold less volumes but got a better margin at the end of the year just confirms I am right … and it’s probably even more evident for Sony who can sell a standard 50mm f1.4 at more that 1500€… The only gear I could buy new is the Nikon Zf because as an old Nikon user since the Nikon FE , this camera is just the dream all ex Nikon users have in mind and it will be difficult to wait for 2 years for buying it old :).

Why not pop the xf27 mm lense on your XT3? It gives you many of the things that you like for portability and removes issues like battery loading. I like having the controls that I use the most on the outside, all the things I might have to touch from photo to photo. I like Fuji's industrial design, it makes me want to pick it up and shoot. I enjoy using my XT3 and the film simulations.

Nice video Rick. I have an X-T3 with the 27mm f2.8 pancake lens attached for everyday use. When I go out for a hike or something I use it with a 16-80 and 70-300. I much prefer using prime lenses though.

@richardturner81

@@00Ryder I’m really pleased with it. It’s nicer than the 55-200 I had previously in terms of output and build and for the focal length it’s compact and lightweight.

@@richardturner81 at some point in the near future I’ll be switching to an Xt5 and I’m just not sure what lens set up to go for. My current options are the 27mm pancake and the 18-135 OR the 16-80 and the 70-300. I use a 18-135 now and love the versatility of that lens but I also want an everyday option. I’m just wondering if the extra reach is worth it.

@@00Ryder I had the 18-135 and really liked using it for the same reason. I did want the extra reach for wildlife shots as I live near Cannock Chase that’s why I traded it in for the 70-300. If I didn’t need the extra reach though the 18-135 is really capable or at least the copy I had was. The 16-80 is fine but it’s my least used lens out of the 3 I have.

@@richardturner81 no way, I only live just off of J16. How often do you chat to someone on KZfaq who’s essentially ‘down the road’ 😂. I keep coming back to the the 27mm prime and 18-135 and then considering other options then back to that. I don’t really do wildlife but the extra reach on hikes for landscapes would be nice to have. Since my first born came along I’ve absolutely rinsed my 35mm but it’s a bit to tight at times on my APSC Canon and the 18-135 just isn’t great indoors. Hence why I’m thinking the 27 f2.8 and the 18-135 would work well. And like Rick has pointed out, I can edit RAW photos but those simulations and JPEG workflow for quick sharing of family photos would be much easier and enjoyable. I can still shoot landscapes RAW and edit them if I want to.

My phone is my everyday camera - and it's not an amazing phone. I'm saving up for a decent camera as I'm sure I could get much better images from it, but there are so many things on the list above it. Think it's going to be a while! I make do with what I have though. Your videos are so inspiring.

X100F (secondhand before the silly prices), and also because my little Lumix LX3 broke when I dropped it! This is a shame as the black-and-white setting (noir) is so moody and has great contrast, only matched by AR (B/W red, plus a lot of grain) with the fuji. The advantage of the fuji is the viewer. I never got on with the whole screen thing. By the way, a great, honest video. Note: I'm still a novice, and the thought of anything other than a fixed lens is beyond me.

Every time I go out with just my phone or a camera with a fixed lens, I am frustrated. I always see a pic I'd love to take if what I had in my hand had a bit wider or narrower field of view. So, I carry my G9 and the 16-800 worth of glass. I am certainly partial to the concept though!

@@RickBebbington I am, honestly carry it every where and it produces great images. Because it's so small people pay you no mind so you really get some great candid photos.
