jeremy clarkson once said "when you're 2, a year is a half of your life, but when you're 30, a year is a 30th of your life" meaning that as you get older the years are slowly becoming less and less of how long you've been alive, with each seeming shorter and shorter because of it

Biologically, this is regarded as the reason why. It has been proven that you are born to intuitively understand numbers multiplicatively, rather than additively. I forget how exactly, but I think you can google the study somehow. It had something to do with babies and numbers. Essentially this is the actual reason, however what the guy in the short says certainly plays a part.

Alternatively, think of it this way: when you were 2, a year was half of your life, when you were 10, it was only 10%, as a 20 year old, a year will only be 5% of your life, so, proportional to your entire life, the longer you live, the shorter each year is in comparison, and this feeling increases logarithmically.

Also, as Vsauce explained, when you're 10, 1 year = 1/10 of your life, but when you're 40, 1 year is only 1/40th of your life and our brains function in proportions because everything is relative. This is the same as 5th graders seeming really tall when you're in first grade but seeming tiny when you're in high school. Edit: This is also why kids seem impatient to adults, a 5 year old's 10 minutes is a 30 year old's hour. Also wow this blew up

Beware of Dihydrogen Monoxide, nearly all deaths show signs of Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO) consumption. The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its "importance to the economic health of this nation." In fact, the navy and other military organizations are conducting experiments with DHMO, and designing multi-billion dollar devices to control and utilize it during warfare situations. Hundreds of military research facilities receive tons of it through a highly sophisticated underground distribution network. Many store large quantities for later use.

It's really only retroactive thought that makes it slow, and also only to an extent. Vsauce covered this as well, and he mentions a study that surveyed the time in comparison to the past their lives have had, and after a certain point (can't remember when) it balanced out. Time is all quite personal either way, and it's really how you choose to feel it.

Everything is so bland, I wear the same clothes, eat the same food, have the same hair, go the same places, and do the same things, it’s just wake up, go to school, come home, cry and do homework, stay up late without my parents noticing because it’s the only point where time slows down, and then fall asleep and repeat. This is just my experience so far, from a internet stranger to you a internet stranger. I’m 23 and yeah time does get slower because of the lack of things your doing. When I was in HS I was involved in many things like band, sports, boyscouts. A lot was going on and as I went to college I dropped some stuff like sports, after college it’s just work and sleep. Or whatever you decide to do no shame in not going to college. But regardless a lot of your time will be work, sleep and finding things to do on your free time. Work is just means to fund your life style. Work should never be your end all be all for feeling happy. Other way around friend. I suggest doing things over the weekend or in your free time outside of work. Trying new things is always good and branching out from the same old same old is very refreshing don’t get caught in a cycle of doing the same thing everyday. I am not trying to discourage you but a take away is that; 1. No job is worth your mental health, (there’s a fine line with this) if you are feeling overwhelmed at work because of your workload make sure to reach out for help. Take work/life balance seriously and take up hobbies like how you would have when you were in school. It’s very important to take care of yourself physically and mentally. 2. Save money so you have a safety net, have a checking and savings account. Checking you can have to spend things on and savings don’t touch imagine that it isn’t your money, that’s the easiest way to look at it. And if you need it it’s there to use. 3. Last one because I don’t want to bore you, just listen to yourself and how you feel, do mental checking to make sure you’re doing things that make you happy, REGARDLESS OF WHAT OTHERS SAY YOU SHOULD DO, focus on yourself and what’s most important to you. Nothing else matters except what you see your life turning into. There’s a lot to learn and I would love to answer any questions you might have cause I didn’t have anybody giving me advice. So yeah idk if this was necessary but I hope my insight of what your years out of HS might look like. Wish ya the best of luck. Last last thing, time flies by and you will realize you only have so long on this planet, so make sure to live YOUR life. People will have opinions on what/who you should be but only you really know what feels right. It’ll take practice but try to ignore those people they don’t see the plan nor should they because they ain’t you!

Simply: When we look back, time = new things Most people: I'm dying faster Reality: Live in the moment! Try new things! Visit new places! Be bold, even change things up at your job if you can, always longer opportunities to grow and find new friends, and if you are afraid of forgetting things (like I am) start a diary, of any sort, for example I made a list of people I know becuase my parents freaked me our by saying they literally forgot everyone at high school (ok that was my dad my mom remembered a few) The internet is an amazing place and technologies expanding is a very representative of the concept of uniqueness, it's what drives innovation (NOT CAPITALISM as some may make you believe) And most importantly, live in the moment! Your still alive for just as long, be happy and you wont care if you forget it!

Fun fact: this is actually due to how we compare time. For example: the first year you are alive, an entire year is your entire life, so for u it literally takes forever to get to a year. When you experience your second year, it goes 1/2 as slowly, then when you are experiencing your 3rd its 1/3 as fast as the first and so on so forth. By 50 you have experienced so many years that a year seems like nothing in comparison to the amount of time you have existed for

@@thestudentofficial5483 I noticed this with my English teacher. Idk if it was caused by this or if she's just an idiot, but when we were trying to estimate how long a certain short story had gone on for, she was saying that each part of the story would've taken way longer than anyone in the class thought it would have. For example she said that the character crossing the street, opening a door and going up one flight of stairs would take at least five minutes. And then that the character ordering a milkshake and a muesli bar at a cafe, then waiting for them to arrive at the table, and then having a short interaction with another character would have taken at least one hour. It made no sense to me.

VSauce actually made a video about why time goes faster as we get older, and it's because if you were 7 for example, a year in the context of 7 years is a lot, but if you were 50 and got a year older, a year in the context of 50 years isn't a lot so it doesn't feel like a lot. It's hard to explain with words but VSauce made a video with a graph about it, if you wanna know more about it please check it out.

This illusion is caused because the memories you have stored are continuously growing, so the memories you make as an adult make up a smaller portion of the total memories you have stored in your mind. Thats why when you are a child each thing feels like a momentous occasion because those memories literally made up a greater fraction of information stored.

It doesn’t really make sense though. If this was how our minds worked, we would not experience reality consciously if there was nothing new to experience, which is evidently not the case. What makes more sense, I’ve found, is that we experience time according to the amount of processing that happens in our brains over time. This theory seems to sit well with real life, i.e in intellectually engaging activities time feels faster, and when you’re doing nothing it seems to take ages, simply because you aren’t doing as much thinking. It would also mean animals (apart from maybe dolphins?) would experience time slower than us, and small children would have time feel slower as although they have more to think about, their minds will be less developed and they do less processing of information overall.

I think the fact that time moves faster and faster the older we get is also due to what percentage of life it is. If a baby is a week old, one week will be the entirety of that baby’s life, thereby feeling like a really long time to the baby. If you’re 23 then you’ve experienced a _lot_ of weeks in your life so one simple week will feel like nothing. If you’re 86 then you’ve gone through even more weeks so it will probably feel faster still. Basically, the passage of time is relative to how much time each individual has experienced themselves.

I'm 27 and yeah. I just work. The days go by immensely fast and don't drag. Yesterday was Monday, today is Friday.

Also this is why I continue learning extensively on every subject I know of that interests me. Even though I did go through a lot of the cool things younger like how cpu systems work and the physical part or programming or metal work and woodwork but there’s always something to learn

I believe casey neistat said something about this once, but time goes faster for a 40 year old compared to a 5 year old because 1 year is a lot in contrast to the 5 years of life that the 5 year old has had, but for a 40 year old, 1 year is not very much compared to the rest of their life

I always thought it was that each new day makes up less of your overall life. Like when you're born your first day is 100% of your life so far, when you're 10 days old its 10% of your life, and so on. So by the time you're old each new day is insignificant to the whole experience

Man its really sad, as children we really had some great memorable unique experiences but as we grow older, we just do few things n number of times, I’m stuck in my career, each day feels the same, studying, working out etc!
