Christine! I love how transparent you are. You are such a sweet, welcoming person. What would you consider the best skills you've gained so far on the job? Also, do you think Six Sigma or other project management skill verifications would be good additions to building your resume for consulting?
@ChristineWong
@ChristineWong 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Oriana! Thank you so much! That means a lot to me! ❤️ Six Sigma would help in management consulting, but what kinds of project management skill verifications did you mean? Like Scrum certification? Those always help, but if you meant the PMP certifications, that only really helps if you aim to become a project manager role. Doesn’t hurt though, and it’s one way to stand out!

Absolutely true. Having done tech consulting for 7 years, I can totally relate to pros and cons. One thing I want to add, technical consulting does not directly provide you a easy exit path from the technology itself. You need to learn another technology or you need to change into another vertical like business or marketing, and a lot of recruiters are not welcoming of this. But you can always change that, with how you project yourself. My two cents.
@ChristineWong
@ChristineWong 3 жыл бұрын
I can totally see that! I think it’s also how you position yourself and what kind of roles you go for. For me, if I were to exit, I would go for product management. Not exactly “techie” but it is very similar to what I already do! However, if you have certifications and whatnot, you may always get recruiters hunting you down for that specific technology even if you try to pivot out, haha. That’s when I see learning a new technology can help best.

hey Christine, i wanted to say thank you for your wonderful channel. i am a woman in tech who comes from a conservative family.. that most definitely did not approve of my degree or career choice. I’m so glad my videos help! Unfortunately, I also come from a conservative family myself and they don’t even support me getting a job in tech consulting because it’s male dominated and all the travel “isn’t good for a woman.” But you have to push through and prove them wrong! That’s actually one of my biggest drivers of motivation and one of the main reasons why I started my KZfaq channel is to tell my story and help others like you know it’s possible!

@@blueberry_salsa8758 Thank you for your support! Unfortunately, “bad experiences” do well on KZfaq because people tend to engage with those videos more and click on them more so they get boosted in the algorithm much more. Just like how you will be more likely to want to watch a video on “Why you should NOT get a cat” vs. “Why you SHOULD get a cat.” Tons of people have positive experiences, just the negative ones shout more to people.

Each day will cover each of these segments: how to stand out in a client call as an entry level, how are we and Accenture dealing with COVID-19 Quarantine, work life balance in consulting, differences (and skills needed) in Technology Consulting vs. Management or Strategy Consulting, and lastly, career counselors and performance achievement at Accenture or in the consulting industry. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bKuYdZRyldbVmmQ.html

Great video, subscribed! I majoried in MIS and have plans to switch into a technology consulting role and this video really helped me learn more about the field. Question if you may answer in a future video/comment: How should one prepare for an interview for a tech consultant? What kind of 'hot skill' have clients looking for? How has covid19 affected your role/tasks/ and over field? From a curious monkey, Thank you 😊
@ChristineWong
@ChristineWong 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I appreciate it! I’m definitely going over my hiring process at Accenture, so that will also go over how I prepared for the interview! Regarding Covid-19, other than not going onsite anymore, we’ve have always been virtual when not onsite, but when the client goes virtual due to the nature of some of the work we do, we’ve lost productivity. Go-lives can get pushed, projects get extended or cut, funding could get cut, but so far we haven’t been affected much. I have a video coming out this week on work week in my life as a tech consultant quarantine edition, so that would be great for you to watch!

There are still tech consulting jobs that require very little travelling! I did an internship in those that only needed me onsite for presentation of interim and final deliverables, so that can be literally just two times a year! Typically the more technical the less travel. If so more functional technology consulting (what I do), there is a lot more traveling and management and strategy consulting even more.
@ChristineWong
@ChristineWong 4 жыл бұрын
Actually a lot of tech consulting gigs allow you to work from home, so it’s even a better job for homebodies than a normal office job. 😂 Believe it or not there are more introverts in tech consulting than other consulting disciplines because tech is filled with nerds but also the nature of working from home.

@@ChristineWong the two firms PWC and EY I interviewed with told me it's a lot of travel. Which ones would you know that require less travel?
@ChristineWong
@ChristineWong 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly there really is no big difference, but there may be a slight change in policy due to the pandemic on traveling, so I would ask them directly. Some are pushing less travel than before because clients are realizing you can do many things remotely, some give you an OPTION of traveling but won’t force you to.

I have a question: when you were being interviewed, would they ask you a lot of questions about what industries you wanted to focus on. Because I am honing on my business and data analytics skills now, but I really do not have a specific industry in mind. Would they care about if you have a specific industry to go in or not? Also, would they ask you about your insights into a specific industry like you have to read news or follow up on an industry to learn more about it beforehand? Thank you so much!

Thank you so much! I’m so glad you learned a lot out of this video! I was also upset when I tried to get into the field myself and there were no resources out there. When I reached out to people, even for that, they didn’t give me an in depth response either. To answer your question, you don’t need to focus on an industry at all, but it can be a power play if you want to focus on a hot industry where your skills are needed. This could be healthcare, insurance, financial, government, etc. Definitely read up on current events though, not just tech-related ones. It’s key for the interviews, and also great to see where you may have an opportunity to pursue. If you go for a boutique firm, chances are there are industries they do focus on as they don’t usually span against all industries. For those, it’s crucial to know about those industries. If you’re going in for data analytics, understanding the type of data and problems the industry has can give you a competitive edge.

I’m glad my content helped you! Tech consulting does sound like a logical and reasonable approach! You should start by networking with anyone at Accenture based in Nigeria (I’m assuming that’s where you’re currently at) and see what are they looking or recruiting for locally. Constantly upskilling and learning is also a big part and can make you very marketable as well (which you would find out through networking with the local office)! You’ll also need client facing skills and it sounds like your previous role has you covered there.

It really depends on what you are currently good at and comfortable with, but for me, it helped a lot pushing my boundaries and forcing myself to go to networking events where I had no idea what to expect. This forced me to know what to talk about on the spot with strangers and how to pivot. It’s also very important to always stay level headed and present but know how to stall. I always ask clarifying questions as I’m thinking to come up with a response. Just like how many people go “that’s a very good question!” 😂 So ultimately it comes with experience and forcing yourself in uncomfortable situations. I am an introvert so even being in crowds or talking to strangers felt very intimidating before college and then in college I forced myself in those situations as much as possible. Now I’m comfortable with it!

Thank you! I have worked with the biotech/pharma industry (closest I had to healthcare), but healthcare industry definitely does hire consultants. They will tend to be longer term and bigger projects since it is the healthcare industry after all, but it definitely exists! If you’re interested in technology consulting, definitely find experience in tech (see this video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gc1-rMmE1J-ucqM.html), but otherwise you might need to go through the management consulting route to a healthcare focused firm or find some business experience if you want a bigger generalist firm.

Thanks for your informative video! One question I have: you mentioned about the flexibility of tech consulting roles, like switching from data analytics to web design. However, aren't companies hiring consultants for their specialized expertise? Like the workday software you mentioned. If a consultant is switching between areas (or joining a consulting firm as a fresh grad), how can he or she persuade the client they are worth it? And do consulting firms provide training for fresh grads or junior employees for that reason? Thanks!
@ChristineWong
@ChristineWong 3 жыл бұрын
Usually entry level roles you can but even if you’re an experienced hire you can jump around with the skillset. I had a friend go in for workday integrations and then moved over to AWS and another as a technology consultant move to management consulting. As long as you network, do training, and get certifications, you can! I actually do have a video on “imposter syndrome.” You don’t REALLY have to prove the client you’re worth it but rather just make sure you maintain professionalism and constantly learn and adapt. If you’re certified, you already know more than a typical average person.
@ChristineWong
@ChristineWong 3 жыл бұрын
As for training, most do provide training and almost have an unlimited training budget (I have over 10 certifications under my belt), but smaller or boutique firms may not and only give you training on an as needed basis through project demand.

@ChristineWong
@ChristineWong 3 жыл бұрын
If you are coming in as a college grad, It doesn’t matter much getting certified. You wouldn’t have restricted yourself. What might end up happening is that you have 2-3 years to decide what you want to do despite having certifications. If you come in as an experienced hire (a precious job before), it might be a bit harder just because you’re usually higher in the organization and more specialized therefore easier to pigeonhole yourself.

It can vary so much! If you’re going for tech consulting, it might be lower than strategy consulting but even the firm matters too. Tech consulting could be higher starting pay at a big firm than strategy consulting in a smaller lesser-known firm. Region matters a lot too because salary does differ even from city to city. What type of consulting are you looking for and what region? I would start from there. Plus, how many years of experience? Sometimes with masters, you don’t get it immediately after ungrad but you get it a few years after, so that has to be factored in too! Copied and pasted. You wrote the comment in the salary video! Here are reasons why: - You have the technical aptitude clearly - You work with clients (either externally or internally) - If you work in a team, that’s ideal - If you worked in a SMALL team, it means you also had to learn on your feet and carry a lot of the weight -You are flexible because you do something new every day When he emphasized all this which are qualities of a tech consultant, it was easy for him. The only difference is he has ONE client for a longer period of time, but it’s really not that much difference from that skills-wise.

Thank you for sharing these valuable informations. You mentioned business and tech skills, what is your background?

I was a business major at Boston University concentrating in finance, management information systems, and strategy. Throughout my college years I had both business and tech internships, using my prior or internships as leverage to get the next! I go over more in detail here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rrJ-gr1-sLaxeXk.html

You don’t need experience in tech consulting or consulting. Just ones that have transferable skills and experiences. I recommend you to check out my videos on that to build a story and position your resume and interviews better for it!

@@yashsrivastava7817 to be honest no. That’s a baseline. Some technical skills and certifications are better, particularly in cloud now due to the huge focus out there. Salesforce, AWS, Workday, etc.
