All right, time to put on the tin-foil hats, because today we're talking about the isolated planet of Taldain, and its mysterious Shard: Autonomy.
What are Autonomy's goals? What's been happening on the planet in the hundreds of years since it was sealed off from the rest of the Cosmere? We don't know for sure, but we have clues...

I was shocked when I was reading white sand and realized “Duchess Khrissalla” was THE Khris. It feels weird to see a recurring cosmere character in a visual medium. I wonder how she’ll react if her home planet becomes a galactic threat? Will she finally take an active role in the main narrative?
@genericallyentertaining
@genericallyentertaining Жыл бұрын
Right?? It's another thing that rubs in just how early White Sand takes place, since whenever else Khriss appears, she's a jaded, hundreds-of-years-old Worldhopper I think Khriss really wants to know more about what's going on on Taldain, but what she writes in Arcanum Unbounded seems to imply it's difficult to impossible for her to get information out of the planet. I'd imagine there are still some things she knows about Autonomy that we haven't learned yet, though...

It definitely feels like Autonomy is going to be a major player in the space age of the Cosmere. It seems like she has already carved out a decent number of planets for herself at the point we are in the timeline. of the shards we know of, she has a presence on by far the most different planets. I believe there are also a couple of WoBs that imply she may have been allied with Odium at one point. On top of that there is a very popular theory that she is related to Mistborn Era 2’s Trell. Regardless of the tech level of Taldain, it seems like she is getting in early on interplanetary interference.

A theory about Autonomy. I may be going out on a limb here, but here goes: In MB secret history, when Kelsier and Khriss meet, Kelsier asks if Khriss can help Kelsier stop Ruin, and Khriss replies something like "we don't have the resources to stop a shard right now". This implies that somewhere, someone has developed a way to counter a shark's power. What if the people of Taldain figured that way out, and Autonomy's goal is to stop the wider cosmere from figuring this out. This is just an idea, but if you are right in that the people of Taldain are aware/ruled by Autonomy, they might want to be able to stop her, if the need arises. Maybe I am spitballing, but that is just an idea I came up with while watching. By the way, great content. Very funny! Edit: yes, I am aware that I mistyped shard as shark, but it's funny so I'll keep it lol.

I really enjoyed your lines of thinking! I've been keeping rough tabs on what the fandom's theories and ideas are since I read the Cosmere a few years ago, and this lines up with basically everything I've heard so far. Three things to bear in mind: Firstly, I ordered a copy of the White Sand Omnibus edition which was done in a kickstarter several months ago. This isn't available to be ordered anymore as far as I'm aware, but should hopefully help with some of those pacing issues you mentioned (and which I agree with). Secondly, I think it is bold to assume that noone at all has managed to visit Taldain since Bavadin restricted access, since we regularly see incredibly powerful and knowledgeable individuals and groups getting fooled by several people (Hoid obviously being the worst offender). this is just a nitpick and probably not hugely relevant, but hey ho. Finally, it has been confirmed that Autonomy has / had some kind of alliance / agreement / pact with Odium. I think this was in a WoB somewhere, but also possibly mentioned in the SA epigraphs maybe. Anyway, I am extremely excited to see how this will turn out after Odium's... change in management... shall we say in RoW. Anyway, great video!!
@genericallyentertaining
@genericallyentertaining Жыл бұрын
That's so interesting about the pact with Odium! I hadn't heard about that. I'd imagine however, that, given that Odium is Odium, it was only a tenuous agreement at best, and that...well, as you said, now that Odium is under new management, he might be able to find some loopholes in whatever pact they made, (like he's trying to do with Dalinar.)
@henrychipperfield8359
@henrychipperfield8359 Жыл бұрын
@@genericallyentertaining That's similar to what I thought - obviously Odium is crafty and not trustworthy at the best of times, so I've been in suspense and waiting for the inevitable exploiting of loopholes as you say, with the new circumstances involved, and basically who will stab the other in the back first. It's an interesting idea that if they weaken each other then maybe the heroes / Cultivation / the ghostbloods can maybe exploit the mutual weakness and rise to prominence? But obviously that is just speculation :)

The white sand graphic novels were an interesting but failed experiment in my opinion. I recently started reading the prose version from the Branderson newsletter and it felt a bit like a revelation like: "ah so this is what they tried to do", some world building, characterisation and magic system intricacies just got lost in translation in between mediums. A shame, because I think the White Sand world has so many cool ideas and implications for the cosmere as a whole. Loved the video, listening to cosmere theories is always fun and I actually learned something as well, I either didn't know or had forgotten that Taldain was closed off from the rest of the cosmere. By the way, are you aware that the white sand graphic novels had a change in artists for the third volume? I found the change in art style quite jarring, nothing wrong with either art style, but they are quite distinct, making the third volume feel different from the other two.
@genericallyentertaining
@genericallyentertaining Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've read bits of the prose version - the parts included in Arcanum Unbounded - and it's definitely clear that as an adaptation the comics are a little lacking. For instance, characters in the comics say things out loud that are part of the internal monologue in the book, and it just doesn't work. Glad you enjoyed the video!

The group of beings that shattered Adonalsium were wrong to think they could handle the Shards. The Shards are in control not the beings that were invested by the Shard as evidenced by Sazed or Ati who were a direct example of how little the vessel influences the power. The Cosmere is a mess. Hopefully, Hoid’s plan will work to help fix what is wrong.

White Sands was a neat concept, but I feel like it would have been better as a novel instead of a graphics novel. You're right, the pacing was wierd and I also felt like it was in fast-forward. I didn't feel ANY connection to any character, but the world-building aspect was awesome. I've read all three back-to-back 2 years ago, and I literally forgot that Autonomy was the shard there. So, I guess take that as an indicator to show how meh it is. Not as meh as the Rithmatist though, that one I couldn't even finish lol.

Everytime I read or watch something about the cosmere I am left wondering where all this information is coming from. I have read most of the cosmere books and I always end up on multiple coppermind pages about stuff I never heard about... For some things it makes sense as you would really only notice them after rereading some books. I did not realize the Khriss in Secret History was Khrissala, at the time I had not yet read White Sands. Or the fact that autonomys vessel is also known as Bavadin (I attribute that to my bad memory for names) But there is just so much stuff I just did not see at all. Like the fact that the Shard Autonomy is apperently invested in one of the Suns there... makes some sense in hindsight but I did not even thinkt to consider the possibility (Not sure if this is a spoiler or not since it does not directly come from the books) Sometimes I feel like even though i read (almost) all the books I am still being left out of some grander story Does anyone else feel like this or is it just me?
