Backblaze is incredible value for money. You get unlimited storage, can add external drives to your backups and from October 3rd, 2023, they are including the 1 year versioning retention in with the base price. After the initial backup, it runs in the background and you forget it’s there, until you need it, which hopefully is never. But also having the contents of your backed up drive available on the iOS apps when you’re on the go is fantastic and all for the price of one fancy coffee per month.

I want to know how reliable it is if someone needs to restore from backup. Icloud backup is not that reliable when it comes to iphone n ipad. I have done it. I do manual backups using third party software.

Nice video. I like that Apple added the ability to recover iCloud Address Book versions. Hopefully they will add similar ability to iCloud Drive to protect against ransomware etc.

I still use an AirPort Time Capsule to back up my Macs wirelessly. They are no longer supported by Apple but it’s a better alternative to plugging in and out an external drive.

I wonder why they didnt take it forward. May be just to make people habitual of the monthly subscription model. Time capsule works wonderfully well. N it is future proof.

Another example, if you have the even rarer doomsday scenario where someone has locked you completely out of your iCloud account, you’ll have access to files in the offsite backup to rebuild a new account, including photos, if the backup is setup for them.

Hi, I have M1 256gb MacBook and around 3TB used in my iCloud. I wish I could have all my data in external drive for as second backup. What you recommend to do ?

Thanks for your extremely helpful videos. My question is: after using migration assistant, for whatever reason, downloads, ibook collection and audio files did or do not appear on the new, M1 Mac. They. are however, still on the old Mac. I would really like to get my books and audios to the new Mac. What is the easiest way to have the Ibooks and music look identical to the older one? Thanks in advance!

For the Books app maybe just turn on iCloud syncing for both? Otherwise, locate those files and transfer them. For Music, it depends on how you use Music. If you just have a local Music library, you should find that in your Music folder. Bring that over as well and point your Music app to it.

Great info. One question: Is backing up to iCloud (not iCloud Drive) similar to OneDrive, Dropbox, etc. and not a substitute for the "true" offsite backups?

As always, thanks for ALL the amazing videos. You are one of our favorite KZfaq channels. I have been a Mac consultants since 1984 and have long preached : 2 * Time Machine Backups & Dropbox & Backblaze for 3-2-1 Backup Security. Can you do a video about the MASSIVE and TRAUMATIC changes to Dropbox, OneDrive and Google Drive? These USED to store files in the HOME folder so that they WERE Backed up to Time Machine AND to Backblaze. BUT the changes that put all these services in /Users/username/Library/CloudStorage/Dropbox BREAK all Time Machine and BackBlaze backups… NOW NOTHING backs up. Can you do a video on this terrible change and workarounds [Synology servers and CLOUD SYNC]? This change is TRAUMATIC for me and my clients and I have no simple solution. Time Machine should still backup the things in the Library folder though. Time Machine backs up everything.

@@macmost I think it may be for some Apple reasons I don’t know yet. But, You can no longer be in a Dropbox , one drive or Google drive folder and use the finder menu ENTER TIME MACHINe To roll back and retrieve older version. You also can’t manually open the Time Machine folder and drill down to Users/zork/Library/CloudStorage/. This change is DEVASTATING. It certainly sells ICloud desktop and documents more , since that works. But my only current solution for clients is to have them drop these services or buy a Synology where you can use the CLOUD SYNC app to synchronize all those services to a Synology share. It’s horrible . Fingers crossed there is some other workaround to protect data on these services. Can the icloud not have whole device backup like it does with ipad and iphones where everything is mirrored and not just files in documents n desktop? Like with iphones you can put files manually as it is cloud storage but it does make device specific backups too right?

The "backup" feature of iCloud is for iPhone and iPads only. There is no such feature for Macs. Use Time Machine for backups there. Or, there are various online backup services if you want that.

Someone stole (or threw away) my MacBookAir (2009) and external storage drive 2 years ago and I just found out about it. I sorely wish I had a remote backup 😢 As far as I can figure, there is nothing I can do to get the data back, though I’ve had iCloud all along and my iPhone is backed up there.

Hi， I don't get why google drive or other cloud are not backups. Can you explain it in more detail? Thanks. I thought it is safe to save files on cloud.

Think about file recovery and versioning. "Google Drive keeps deleted files in the Trash folder for 30 days. After 30 days, the files are automatically deleted and cannot be recovered. Previously, trashed items were retained indefinitely until the user emptied the trash."

I was hoping to hear from you mentioning the most essential thing, disc image backup, because most cloud backups, (Black Blaze included), don't have it.

Not sure what you mean by that. Backing up disk image files? They would be backed up like anything else.

@@macmostNo, they won't. By disk image files, I mean system files, all Applications, Plugins, Presets, Settings, Shortcuts, Macros, etc, whatever you changed or installed. So, for example, if you have 300 software, 50 safari extensions, and 2000 plugins installed on your Mac, you will need to install all from the beginning and set all settings from the beginning (in case you remember, which I doubt is possible), which can take you maybe a year to do so.

@@ES60Hz "Disk Image" has a specific meaning, but you mean something else, simply "everything" on the drive. Yes, an online backup would be to backup your data, the things you created and can't be replaced in any other way. If you want a way to restore your system, then a Time Machine backup or other local backup will do that. Sounds like you want to have both. I do both as well.

What are some options to just backup your photos on your iPhone without using iCloud.

Sync them with a cable to your Mac. Or, use another cloud service (Google) to store you photos.
