There are many reasons to enlist in the armed forces. Each of us has our own story. Mine was twofold. My family's military service goes back to the 1800s and I needed a job. What's yours? Whatever it is you must remember this. Serving your country is not about you. It's about protecting us and going above and beyond the average citizen every day you are in service. It's a lifestyle. It's commitment. It's enduring hardships that most people can not imagine. It's about the friends you make, teamwork, and getting the mission done no matter how long it takes or what you have to do to accomplish it. Most of all you have to have fun. What a smart move for you. Somehow your video showed up for me as a KZfaq pop-up and found it really interesting. My Dad really liked the Army Air Corps / Air Force from 1944 - 1958 in electroincs communications. and I know is how he met my mom when stationed nearby. I remember being 5 when my Dad spent a year in Newfoundland. That I do remember but he soon then left per my mom's request when he was to next head to Germany but his Air Force experience sure paid off for him for his next job. I am retired and did know four retired IT information technology Air Force who joined our firm and they all did well and were great to know. i also have a friend who wanted to be a doctor and his only way was through the Air Force. I went the college route after high school fortunate to have been accepted in to an IT intern program with a company that paid my way through college. Thank you for your service.

I'm a retired USAF MSgt. I did 23 years active - moved 14 times and was in four different AFSCs, the last of which set me up to walk into a corporate job with a Fortune 50 company when I got out. Your videos make me want to go back and do it all over again. An eye opener on pay and benefits used to be the annual RMC letter. Realized Military Compensation which shows the monetary value of your retirement plan, your tax advantage on BAH and BAS,etc. Am assuming you still get 50% at 20. So a 38 year old would have to have how much invested to pay them a monthly dividend equal to your monthly retirement check? I meet so many people my age who are now struggling with retirement, medical care and when they look at what 23 years on active duty gave me they openly admit they wish they'd stayed in.

Mikayla, you make some good points here. There is a lot a potential benefit in joining the military: job skill training, work experience, LIFE experience, educational benefits. But you also make the point that serving in the military isn't all about the individual. Its about functioning as an effective part of a team toward a common goal. "It's the mission - not you." And that means that sometimes you sacrifice: you can't always serve where you wish, can't always be doing the job that you wish and can't always take leave when you wish. And that, more than anything, is what separates the military from civilian employment.

Pay is nice now. When I was in the Army in 1976 my pay was 325 a month.

If you are active duty, can you go see any civilian doctor if you're willing to pay for it? Or do you always have to go to military doctors? Let's say you want to go to a very good civilian doctor that a friend recommended you, can you just make an appointment an go/pay yourself? Some people might not want to go through the whole process of scheduling an appointment with your military primary care physician and then be transferred to a specialist and all that which could take longer than you want to wait.

To transfer your 9/11 GI Bill benefits to your dependent(s) you must ensure they are listed as your dependents in DEERS and, BEFORE you separate, you must assign at least one month of the benefit to each of your dependents BEFORE you separate (if you don't they won't be eligible. You can reassign benefits later as long as they have at least one month's benefit at the time of your separation) The 9/11 GI Bill pays for 36 months of public, in state college tuition. There are limitations but you get more benefit by taking more classes because the benefit is based on the months you are in class, not the number of classes. (i.e, you use up the same amount of your benefit of you take one class for one month as you would if you took three classes for one month. Both would use one month of your benefit) If you want to go to a private university, check with admissions because many private universities have what is known as a Yellow Ribbon program. If they accept this, you can use the GI Bill to pay for school and the school forgives the difference in tuition cost. When youbare using your GI Bill to go to school (while you are no longer active duty, you can use it on active duty but you don't get full benefits) you are entitled to Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) at E5 single rate based on the location of the institution for full time in person classes. (it varies based on how many hour qualify as "full time" and how many classes are not "virtual", check with the education office for specifics) You are also eligible for an annual $1,000 stipend for books. (again there are limitations based on how many hours you take, check with the education office) As an example, I got my education while I was in the Air Force so, before I retired, I assigned one month each to my wife, daughter and son so that any of them would be eligible to use the benefits later. My daughter recently started school and my son's school is paid for so I transferred 34 months worth of the benefit to my daughter and one month each to my wife and son. (if you remove all benefits from any of your dependents, they are no longer eligible to use the benefit) So my daughter's tuition is paid for by the 9/11 GI Bill and she receives BAH at the E5 rate and a $1,000/year book stipend. If she doesn't use all of the GI Bill entitlement for whatever reason, I can transfer whatever is left to myself, my wife or my son and it can be used by someone else.

I did 14 years as a Security Police Security Specialist assigned to SAC, USAFE and TAC HQ on 4 continents The USAF has the best jobs, the best living conditions, the best food and the best looking female Officers and Airmen, some with beautiful brown eyes!!

just know u are joining military u have to do things u never thought would happen, like u on copter and u hit with ground to air missile and copter going down and friends are gone

I graduated from community college with an Associates Transfer degree and I found on Google that if you graduate with a two-year degree or greater you will be paid more, I believe my rank would be E3 . . ? My second question is, I have disabilities. My main ones are XP and Scoliosis. I really want to be a part of the Air Force, financial freedom is literal heaven. I don't want to be told I can't join because of this. However, when I wear a back brace and cover myself in protective UV clothing, I can accomplish anything! However, I'm scared that I'll be turned away. I have to join! Please help.

I was an honor graduate. 10% chance. Help others pass. It is not about the money. If you join, a chance you may die. I didn't. But disabled. Shit happens. Keep in mind, it can be deadly. Regardless of your position. I went through 2 volcano eruptions and earthquakes. Luckily survived. Oh, and Desert Storm. At least I am paid for life. Unless Republicans vote that away. 🙄 USAF the best force to join. But I wouldn't be here if my family not army, marines, and USAF. That survived. We have always been survivors, since WW1. Not one of us has died in war. We have killed lots of enemies. WW1 to Desert Storm for sure. 😁 The job.
