Networking outside your field can open your eyes to other possibilities and even keep you from making significant mistakes. Two examples: I watched a documentary about ancient Egypt in which the Egyptologist displayed a stone mace head about the size of a baseball and stated that it was probably ceremonial because it wasn't big enough to be effective as a weapon. Anyone who has extensively studied weapons will know that almost all mace-like weapons around the world have heads about the size of a baseball. A larger mace becomes heavy and too unwieldy to swing quickly. You have to strike a balance between force of impact and speed of delivery. On another occasion, a historian talking about the domestication of horses stated that horses wouldn't have been of much use in warfare until the invention of the chariot because without stirrups, the horse doesn't make a very good fighting platform. Scythian horse archers and Sassanid cataphracts would beg to differ. Both of these errors could have been avoided simply by consulting an expert in military history before coming to the final conclusion. I'm sure similar mistakes occur in other fields in which I'm not an expert.
