It's a laughable thing when a person says someone is "less of a man" because of the bike they ride. That already shows how less of an individual the complainer is. Stay in your lane, and everything will be golden. Live your life, focus on your life, and no one else's.

I've owned a couple of Sportsters. Here's the thing, Sportster owners tend to think of themselves as Sportster owners, not necessarily Harley owners. You won't find too many Sportster owners with Harley Davidson tats, Jackets, Belt Buckles, etc. Sportster owners tend to like the bike because of the amazing amount of aftermarket parts and mods you can do to them, at least in my opinion.

There's something wrong with you if you think that riding a smaller cc bike makes you "less of a man". The 883 is a perfectly decent bike for urban environments, especially in Europe (and rest of the world) where we can lane split and with a few bits and bobs you can also do some decent touring on it. A bigger bike doesn't make you more of a rider. Riding when others don't. like that teenage kid that rides his scooter to school come sun, snow or rain, is more of a rider than some riders who put their bikes on the garage at the first sign of rain.

Fully agreed. I do not believe that 'real rider' or users of many other things are even curious about 'KZfaq verdicts'. Those 'reviews' are propably just cheap buzz for bored kids with a little nick for moto, to argue about in the comments, not for riders. I can hardly imagine changing mind about 'what machine I want' because of... of what, some KZfaq moaning of a random person... ? If You like a machine and it works, it obviously is... good for You...

I love my 883 Sportster. Years ago, after riding for over 50 years, I went to a trike because my knees got so bad I just couldn't safely ride my big 2-wheeler any more. Recently, I found my Sporty at a garage sale where she'd been sitting under a tarp beside their barn for the last 8 years or so; and I fell in love with her. She needed me.... and I needed her. A few months later and after a lot of work (and $$), now she looks and rides like new. She's light enough that I can ride her even with my really bad knees. She's an absolute blast to ride! Nimble, powerful, sure-footed; you couldn't ask for a better riding bike. OK, I'm 6'3" tall, and weigh 270, and I do kind of "dwarf" the Sporty. And, yes, my buddies sometimes poke fun at me for RIDING such a small bike. Who cares? She's very comfortable for me with the forward controls I added, and the key word is that I'm "RIDING". At least I can still RIDE. I have my trike for when I want to take longer rides or take along my wife. But for running around locally, you can count on seeing me on my little fire-red Sportster. Trikes are just fine; but there's nothing like really being on two wheels. Sportsters are great bikes!!!!!!

Most the reasons people hate Sportsters are the same reasons I love them. They're a simple rough no frills bike that feel exactly how I think a bike should. I don't need electronic aids, huge fairings, heated seats, radios, cup holders or any of that unnecessary stuff found on alot of the bikes being put out by manufactures these days. The Evo has proven to be a reliable platform and is probably one of, if not THE simplest motorcycle engine to work on these days. It's also probably has more aftermarket support than 99% of motorcycles on the road and can be made to almost anything you want it to be. Of course everyone has they're own prefrences when it comes to bikes and that's what makes this life so great. If I had to describe the Sportster in one word I'd say it's 'RAW' & that's exactly what I think a motorcycle should be. It will take you as far as you can go. Your opinion may vary.

Unfortunately for the argument, it's not about how easy an engine is to work on. It's about how often it needs to be worked on. Most people buying Harleys or any bikes aren't doing their own work. Dry sump Harleys just have to be ridden and kept clean in a never ending cycle.
@MikeRCJ
@MikeRCJ 6 жыл бұрын
Joe danero What about Sportsters leaves you to believe these bikes need more mechanical attention than others? Service intervals are every 5,000 miles and require you to do no more than you would on other bikes. Even the new models with FI and ABS are by no means technically advanced compared to what's being produced in today's motorcycle world and leave little to go wrong that your average guy with minimal tools & a service manual couldn't take care of at home on his day off. Your right that most people don't maintain there own rides anymore, people in my generation are either to lazy or don't care enough to do these things themselves. Personally if I don't feel comfortable working it myself I probably wouldn't own it. Me & many others enjoy the satisfaction of knowing somethings done and its done right. You can say most Harley riders don't maintain they're own ride, and I can agree to an extent especially the older generation, but I certainly wouldn't say it's most of us. The ancient technology used by HD that so many people seam to complain about is exactly why alot of us are drawn to these bikes. They're simple. And before you ask no I'm far from being a Harley fanboi. In fact the Sportster is the only bike HD currently makes that has any appeal to me. As far as dry dump bikes needing to be clean and ridden in a never ending cycle I just don't agree with that. I've seen to many being neglected for years that need nothing more than a little going over, new battery, fresh fluids, tires and a little shot of oil in the cylinders and they fire up and are right back on the road again. My current Sportster is my daily transportation. Its ridden fairly hard and sees whatever weather mother nature throws my way. Coming up on 50k with many more miles to go and when it's time for a topend I'll take a weekend to rebuild and be back at it again. All that being said if I wasn't the type to want to do things myself and depending on Indys and dealers to maintain my ride than I may be on something else. I have no issue with any bikes as long as it's got two wheels it's fine by me. I prefer simplicity but I like & would ride them all.

It's a spectacular bike & yes it shakes & vibrates & but it's 491 lbs, 70 lbs lighter than current models, looks great & handles well for a cruiser & I can hang with the big bikes & will never need another bike, just my opinion!

Daniel Ney actually I do too, I've learned to embrace it because it's such a good bike the vibes don't even bother me. I've ridden newer models & yeah they're smooth with fuel injection but they're top heavy & nowhere near as good as the bikes made in the 90's. I'm a Sportser fanatic & do like all of them, I just prefer the older ones

7:47 - "Top speed on this bike? I have no idea." Hmm, do you routinely do top-speed checks on any other bikes? Why is this an issue with Sportsters? Of course it's not a "100 mph bike." It's naked. Would you want to do 100 mph on a Triumph Bonneville? Obviously not. People often talk about how little power the 883 has. It has "sufficient" power for 99.9% of all riding situations. Is a drag racer? No, obviously not. But my Sportster friends and I compare notes - exactly NONE of us have *had* to use full-throttle in our normal riding. Why not? Because we're not boy-racers. If you drove a Dodge Hellcat, how many times would it be necessary to use all that horsepower? Probably never. I'm 63. I've owned a ton of motorcycles in my life. I'm on my *third* Sportster 883. I love 'em. I think they're great street motorcycles. They're nimble, quick and fun to ride. My current bike (a '96) doesn't leak a drop of oil. If you put my bike side by side with a 2003 (before they changed to the rubber-mounts) you would not be able to tell them apart. Me, I like that kind of continuity of design. I like the fact that there are still parts from a 1957 model that also fit on a 2019 model, or vice-versa. Oh, and mine reliably gets 55-60 mpg. Try that with a 1200. Is it a crime to prefer to drive a Dodge Dart over the Hellcat? Does it make one less of a man? Is our masculinity tied to what we ride or drive? It seems that everyone wants the Sportster to be something else. And they criticize it because it doesn't accelerate like a ZX-14, handle like a CBR-600, have the suspension travel of a ADV or do long distances like an Electra Glide Ultra Classic. But the Sportster doesn't pretend to any of that. It's just a fun, unassuming little streetbike that's cheap to own and easy to work on. And if you get one with some color and chrome (rather than being all-black), I *GUARANTEE* that your bike will be the center of attention if you roll up somewhere with a group of your friends on those swoopy, lookalike sport-bikes.

I bought a 1989 Sportster as my first bike, passed my test aged 59... I am 6ft and 80kg so I am in the process of fitting forward controls but rode it for the past few months with mids, it has plenty of grunt. As it is an older model, it has carbs, 4 speed box and chain drive, all of which I prefer. Gonna enjoy this summer cruising about, if by the end of summer the 883 feels too placid (which I doubt) then I'll have the option to upgrade using a 1200 kit over winter - For now...I am adequately happy, performs fine for my needs and only cost me £2k.

When I started riding, a 350 was a mid-sized bike. A 650 was big, and a Sportster was a big, big bike. "Then Came Bronson" rode a Sportster. I learned to ride on a Huffy. I learned to ride a motorcycle on a Honda 90. Graduated to a Benelli 125 where I learned how to crash. Then to a Yamaha RD-350 that was my everyday ride while stationed at MCAS (H) New River, NC. So to hear a sportster called a beginner bike is kind of funny to me. My current bike is a Harley Road King.

I'm getting ready to learn how to ride next month and had the opportunity to sit on a bunch of bikes. I think I'm set on the 883. I come from a background of racing cars and here is what I think. The fact the engine is as "old" as it is, is great to me. It's tried and true. One of the cars I've raced as a 2007 Mini Cooper S and being the beginning of the 2nd generation, they were running new engines with perceived perks but it was all terrible BMW parts and designs. I don't mind not being the fastest thing out there, I just wanna cruise to work, relax and live out a dream I've had since high school. Sure I could get a Japanese sport bike or something like most people my age but there's something charming about the style of the 883 and similar bikes like the Indian Scout that captivate me.

I had a Sportster for 15 yrs, all it needed was regular maintenance tires, brakes, oil, plugs and a couple batteries. And the big boys didn't leave me in the dust, only on a long straight stretch of road, but get in the mountains and I was gone or in the city. 99% of my riding was in the city and my XL1200C was a great bike. PS if you ever see the HD Stunt Team 90% of them ride a Sportster too.

Yeah, old school, I love mine too. I've had it for over twenty years and will never sell it.

80 years old. I've been riding motorcycles , Hare scrambles, motocross, road trips and commuting during the mid-70's gas crunch. Hondas, Suzukis, CZs , Yamahas , an Ossa Pioneer and a big Husky since 1967. I've sold all of them in favor of Sportsters and Softails (now 8!). There's plenty of fellows and ladies that'll tell you why. I don't have to...

I've ridden a sportster in my late 20s, it was a 1200 padlock design for handle bars. At the time I had a Yamaha vstar 1100 and I did some mods to the air and fuel. It had a bit more bite after that, but when I rode this stock sportster 1200, i was very surprised that although it was small for me, it had a bit more bite than my vstar and for a heavier bike made of steel vs my aluminum and plastic vstar, it won my vote. I have a DWG with two stage and it's crazy, in a way i kind of miss the the feeling of a slower bike that doesnt want to kill you
