Hello everyone! Welcome back to Fast Lane TV. This video is about " Why you SHOULD NOT buy an Orange County Chopper ".
Do you remember the show Orange County Chopper? Well, the bikes they made aren’t as good as they were made to be on the show and leave a lot to be desired.
Creating bespoke motorcycles that can compete with or perhaps surpass the quality of a stock Harley-Davidson was the focus of American Chopper, a series on the Discovery Channel that starred in Orange County Choppers. The conflict between Paul Sr. and Paul Jr. was a mainstay of most episodes. As a result of these disagreements, office property and equipment have been damaged, and the participants have used profanity. If this were real life, Hollywood A-listers would be fired. Despite some petty fighting, the final goods for the customer are a compromise between the team's divergent views on design.
Following the show's cancellation, the company saw meteoric expansion, attracting fans in droves. They are now marketing themselves as more than just a motorcycle company. The mustached Paul Sr. is still the public face of Orange County Choppers even in its shiny new digs. His son and co-stars, meanwhile, have started their own bespoke bike businesses.
In 1999, the Orange County Choppers team launched its first official shop. The store gained widespread exposure in 2002 when the Discovery Channel began airing American Chopper and maintained its prominence throughout the decade until 2010. Over the course of six episodes, the team demonstrated how the New York-based firm could meet any client's needs by constructing motorcycles from scratch. This is fundamental to their operation, although the group has since moved. After retiring in 2020, Paul Sr. headed south from New York to sunny Florida.
Since relocating to the Sunshine State, the family business has had an extended riding season. With the growth of their business into a "country club" for motorcyclists, they've relocated to St. Petersburg on the western coast of the state. A Harley-Davidson dealership and the Roadhouse museum are located just next to their building. It launched in July 2021 with a bar and restaurant area that featured live music. This brand-new spot in St. Petersburg is like the Holy Land for bikers.
More than ten years have passed since the reality program ended, but the business continues to thrive. They have recently become well-known for selling a variety of products, the most notable of which are clothing and "cool stuff." This includes the sale of all sorts of items, from foldable dog bowls to poker chips. Furthering their service expansion, Orange County Choppers now provides endorsements, wherein Paul Sr. will appear in advertisements for a charge, as well as marketing strategies. Hard Rock Cafe, CAT, and even Bic are among their impressive list of former customers.

Most of OCC bikes are built for looks. Companies commission a bike, run it on the show then put it on display in their corporate offices. Buying one of these is like a big fancy commercial but it's a TV show.

The bikes are 99% show. The fact that you can actually drive them is pretty much an afterthought. The thing is that many buyers thought that they bought a collector's item, something that would increase in value. But as the chopper scene is relatively small, that was never going to happen.

Companies spend $10 million to $100 million or more to develop a model of motorcycle. Regulatory Compliance is a huge hurtle. I wonder if these could even be registered and insured in California. One off makers skip this. OCC makes a bike for less than $100,000 including engineering. Of course, it's garbage. They are pretty, though.

OCC BIKES ARE ONE OF A KIND THEME BIKES. LONG ON LOOKS SHORT ON RIDE CAPABILITY. IT WOULD BE LIKE RIDING A BRICK, WITH WIDE TIRES AND A LOG FOR A SUSPENSION. YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF BUYING A HERITAGE SOFTAIL CLASSIC, WITH 114 engine saddle bags and windshield. And save that extra $40,000. You can use it on clothing or a rainsuit, goggles, or a heated riding gear set. All you need is s good pair of insulated boots, a good pair of rider jeans, armored in the seat and knees, a good, warm jacket and a good pair of leather riding gauntlet glovesand a good pair of sun glasses, polarized green or bronze. One last thing is a good pair of chaps, for cold weather riding. I live in Missouri, I have been to Sturgis 3 times. 1) 103 degrees 2) 32 degrees 3) 115 degrees There is nothing worse than riding a motorcycle in the rain. Then the next worse is riding in a snow storm. Then riding on an asphalt road when the temp hits 115 degrees. It thinned my engine oil so much, my top speed was about 48 mph. That was miserable. The trip was great, a little adversity is better than working anyday!!!

I find it hilarious that the audience (anyone NOT in occ) keeps talking smack about occ for doing occ. Its like hating on pizza hut, domino's, little ceasars, and cici's for making pizza. And before anyone comments anything along the lines of "if it was made of plastic". i can see where everyone gets the idea from. But occ always told ppl the truth and told them what the deal was. The bikes arent meant for long trips or just rides around town. They are show bikes meant to impress. The only time they should be ridden is on and off the trailer at shows. Or yeah maybe around the block but thats it. They are one of a kind custom showpiece bikes meant to be displayed. Otherwise they would be built waaaay different and actually practicle.

Agreed about the seat. It just neededs to be raised and levelled out. And sprung. As for the weak front brake, its probably not weak so much the bike has a rearward weight bias which means it cant contribute much to stopping without locking up. Typical chop dynamics. No rear suspension? Duh, it's called a hardtail or a rigid. Also typical chop. I watched the episode where they built this thing and it was made quite clear they had put a stock 80" Evo in it. 65 rwhp is about right. This was done for budget and reliability reasons. To be honest though, this bike was about the only OCC bike I'd have as all the others DID look unrideable.

Those were not choppers!!!. They were Parade floats!! The only decent one that comes to mind was the Spiderman bike. The worst must have been between the roller coaster one or the fire department one

I think you’d be hard pressed to find anyone that likes the way the bikes actually turned out ride ans dependability wise.

OCC bikes are what I imagine an 8 year old would think is cool. A motorcycle that looks like a fire truck or a rocket ship.

Who wouldn't want to ride a motorcycle that looks like a fire truck or a rocket ship? Sounds like a blast!

If you have an opportunity to buy one on the cheap, and you have storage space, you definitely should! Pack it away, along with the DVD of that episode, then pull it out in 20 years and it will be a collector's item. Doesn't matter how shit the bikes were. The show was a cultural phenomenon. Just look at how valuable TV cars and bikes from the 60s-80s are today.

So my opinion is similar. 90% of the bikes they made on tv were theme bikes and priority was given to getting the client as much brand recognition on their bike as possible. If it starts and runs, and will rumble along in a parade once a year, and the CEO can take it for a ride a few times in good weather, then it’s a success because nearly all of them are put in headquarters or popular stores and put on static display. The fact the seat is loose, or the rake makes it impossible to turn, or the motor runs like a pig doesn’t matter. It’s a tax write off, and it is something to look at. So for sure, if it’s cheap and was built on TV, even better if you get some pics of them building it and have them sign it, throw it into a folder with the DVD of its episode, a few pics of it on display, and in a few decades it will probably increase in value. I don’t think they’ll ever be worth 6 figures, but eh, they’ve been sold for 10k, so at that price, throw it in a garage with a cover over it for a while.

If you don't know what your getting when you buy a bike made for looks you probably shouldn't buy one.and if you can fix your own bike you probably shouldn't buy any custom bike.

OCC bikes: 1) The ride comfort of a skateboard 2) Reliability of a Rolux and 3) Power output of a moped. All for the bargain basement price of half a dozen Harleys.
