As a person who was born and raised in the city, I have to admit that there's no excuse for the bad things happening in Hanoi right now. The growth speed is too fast but the urbanisation can not catch up well, too much construction and unfinished plan going on in the city, corrupted and ineffective management work in certain parts of the city, etc... And the people, of course there are some traits of people from the capital that are not very reputable... But the older generation in the North has suffered a lot - the war, the bloody bombardments, the poorest period of the country,... and now they're trying their best to live their life in the peaceful era, as I don't want to use the world "to survive". In my observation, they're not very in touch with their sensitive side, and I think it's reasonable for the tourists if they feel they're not welcomed. I wouldn't ask for empathy from visitors because sometimes I feel the same as well, but just to provide you with some information that I hope you would understand why many people are not so friendly The younger generation and also the city authority are trying very hard to make Hanoi a better place for not only the tourists but also the citizen themselves. And the city has been changing very quick, like compare to 5-7 years ago, well now me myself could barely recognise the city in some ways (I'm living abroad). I'm sorry if many people may have had bad experiences in the city before, but give it a chance and come back in the future, I assure that you would witness another better version of Hanoi (based on my research about the plan and policy of the city in the upcoming years). Also a tip for visitors, maybe avoid the old quarter and touristy spots, the French quarter would be a better option in the city if you want to enjoy a more tranquil, relaxing and peaceful Hanoi!

Born and raised in Hanoi. Now live as an expat in Thailand. been traveling to numbers of cities in Vietnam. I would say you're unlucky to catch the the "bad experiences" in Hanoi compared to other southeast asian cities. Living in here, Thailand, i've been dreaming every single night to come back to my hometown. Not HCM city, not Danang, not Nha Trang, just Hanoi. I dont ignore the fact of pollution in Hanoi, completely agree. But let's just dive into your cultural opinions. Let's say you find a vacation, not an exploration. if you find a vacation, well, you better read more and look it up at home to figure out what's the best qualified places, foods,...to enjoy. If you find an exploration, deal with it. Like you sit by a strange bar, order its signature cocktail and find the bitterness in it, will you call it a bad cocktail? bitterness and sweetness are both equally respective flavors, and i feel bad for you if you dont know how to enjoy the bittnerness. you dont have chance and ability to enjoy every depth of each flavor. You are staying in Tay Ho district, which is convenient as District 1 HCM City (where Japanese and Korean stay and work). Try to explore District 9, 12 and even 4 in HCM City, it could be the poorest places, but you will find heavenly scent and beautifulness of each. Reach out to help the poor people, dont just take advantage of "cheap travelling to Vietnam". You'll find LIFE in your eyes. I am not giving attitudes here. but i hope you can dig deeper into everything, please dont touch the tip of the iceberg and bring out your conclusions to everything around you. Walk deeply, Look deeply. sincere words to you and readers. thank you for your kindness and respect.

Like if you ask every Indonesian to know which island is the best to visit. The answer is Lombok. not Bali as "we foreigners all know about". You'll find it in the GGMaps, next to Bali. If you find a vacation, or the exact word should be "stay-cation", Bali is the heaven in modern people, quite over-exploited to be commercially entertained, well-known, full of people. If you find an exploration, you will reach the sensational feelings at Lombok. even if you google the internet photos, you wish to be buried in there. Mother Nature stands out of the beautifulness, until people come in...to sad to say.

@@dani-moves North Vietnam and Hanoi have essentially been under Communism for 77 years since 1945, while South Vietnam and Saigon Have been under Communism for 47 years after the North Vietnamese Commie terrorists invaded the free and prosperous Republic of South Vietnam and turned the whole country into the second poorest nation in Southeast Asia, surpassed by Laos, Campuchia, and soon by Myanmar. What you experienced was the difference of 30 years of Communism and how it affected people. It's like visiting the miserable Commie North Korea and free South Korea and sensed the difference in attitude, demeanor, and lifestyle of the residents. That's what authoritarian Communism did to people, turned them into poor, selfish, cold, calculated, self-preserving, unsanitized, inconsiderate humanoids, and that's why most nations in the world rejected Communism, now only forced on a few left, mainly Commie China, Commie North Korea, and Commie Vietnam in Asia, all of which ranked at the bottom in the world in free speech and freedom of the press, and desirability of living indices. If you ask any honest people on the streets of Vietnam while you are there if they want to stay in Vietnam, 99% of them would tell you they want to get out of this Vietnamese Commie sh*thole as fast as they could if given the opportunity, and many have risked their lives doing just that, as evidenced by the 39 ill-fated lives found inside a UK container truck recently on the news (and that's only what's been reported), unfortunately. For a glimpse of the reasons (and there are many), you might want to search "cuop dat dan" (meaning "land-robbing of citizens") even right here on KZfaq to see millions of footages of land-robbing of Vietnamese citizens by the utterly corrupt and brutal Vietnamese Commie terrorist regime all over the country, spanning for decades since Ho Chi Minh's land-reform (1953-1956) that slaughtered nearly 1 million North Vietnamese to rob their lands and private properties. All true. Do your research! Great video! Thank you for giving your honest feedback to world travelers.

I’m just back from an 11 day tour of Vietnam, traveling south to North then back south and I have to say Hanoi was my favourite city, I found the people much more helpful and happy , I certainly felt safe and thought this is what the real culture of Vietnam is, I didn’t think it was anymore dirty than anywhere else I went. I loved going off the beaten track into the back streets and alleyways to find great food and met very friendly happy people. I felt very sad to leave Hanoi and can’t wait to go back I really hope it stays the way it is as it’s very genuine and gives a glimpse of the real Vietnam without all the fancy developments going on ! As long as Vietnam is still ruled by the oppressive and exploitive Communist regime, her potential remains greatly diminished. For any 1% that wants to stay, 99% of the population wants to get out, and many have risked their lives doing just that (for example, 39 doomed lives found in UK container truck recently on the news, and that's only what's been reported), unfortunately. Yet another shocking and also recent example is that during the Covid pandemic when almost all countries assisted their citizens with financial aids in one form or another, the corrupt and murderous Vietnamese Commie regime saw it just as another opportunity not to help but to exploit its ruled citizens even more, essentially making money over the corpses of its citizens by presumably killing at least 30-50K of them, due to grossly misdiagnoses and being thrown into barbwired unhygenic living quarters for isolation, so that they had to sleep on concrete floor, even next to filled trashcans, with inadequate toilet, food, water, or medicine, like animals (searching hard enough, one is able to see shocking video clips on Facebook though the regime tried hard to crack down the leaks by Vietnamese citizen journalists), with the fake nostril Covid test kits, mislabeled as approved by World Health Organization (WHO) in Việt Á scandal, colluded by at least 4 different government agencies (Y Tế , Khoa Học, Công Nghệ, Quân y) and the top Politburo members, including Nguyễn Phú Trọng, Phạm Minh Chính, Nguyễn Xuân Phúc. Murderous Vietnamese Commie regime even had a thug murdered Christian pastor Giuse Trần Ngọc Thanh, like it has done with many other pastors across the nation. There is a reason why the current Commie Vietnam ranks at the bottom of the world in freedom of speech, (true) freedom of religion, and freedom of the press, barely above Commie China and Commie North Korea. There is no true freedom of religion in Commie Vietnam, as this corrupt Vietnamese Commie regime only authorized the fake organizations headed by Commie monks, many of whom were Commie Party officials, and those religious organizations not approved to be infiltrated by them or headed by their Commie agents are accused of malicious and nonexistent crimes and banned, with innocent religious leaders arrested and jailed, as in the recent case with Thiền Am Bên Bờ Vũ Trụ, a harmless Buddhist meditation monastery, for simply having many followers (hence, more influences that the regime fears it can't control) than the Commie Party's officially approved ones. Similarly, its passport ranks at the bottom, 89th out of 111 countries for a reason, barely above North Korea 104th rank. even below many African nations. For comparison, South Korea is at 2nd rank. That's what Republic of South Vietnam would have likely been ranked among at least the top 10 had it not been invaded and occupied by the North Vietnamese Commie terrorists, aided by Commie Soviet and Commie China. Search "cuop dat dan" (meaning "land-robbing of citizens") to see millions of footages across the country from North to South, spanning for decades, dated back to Ho Chi Minh's bloody land reform 1953-1956 that killed nearly 1 million North Vietnamese in only 4 years, or 250K people brutally slaughtered in torturous painful deaths (like being shot, stabbed, mutilated while being alive, or heads being plowed over by water buffaloes while bodies being buried underground) each year on average to rob their lands and homes. Even today, if the rightful owners refuse to have their homes or lands robbed, the ruthless Vietnamese Commie terrorist regime simply jail or massacre them, have tractors run over their bodies or openly assassinate them in their own homes. When it comes to robbing, these barbarian Vietnamese Commie bandits even prey on each other, just as the recent case with then 84-year-old Mr. Lê Đình Kình, a 55-year-Commie Party veteran from Dong Tam, near Hanoi, that got shot dead at 3am in his own home by the Vietnamese Commie terrorist regime. When his wife Mrs. Dư Thị Thành refused to lie about the incident as ordered, the Vietnamese Commie terrorist police brutally tortured her (see more details from "dandongtam" on Facebook). The corrupt Vietnamese Commie government officials routinely dine on lavish gold-plated Salt Bae steak $100K per meal with blood money not just from taxpayers but also from robbed-lands and robbed homes recently drew international condemnations, while many Vietnamese citizens, including elderlies in their 60's and 70's as well as kids as young as 6's to 16's selling lottery tickets on the streets to survive on $2-3 per day. Even Phạm Nhật Vượng the richest man in Vietnam (via his VinGroup) made the bulk of his wealth mainly by colluding with the barbarian Vietnamese Commie regime in selling their robbed-lands from Vietnamese citizens. Travelers to Vietnam in her current form (not at all like this before the Communists took over) should keep this in mind. Behind the beauty of the land and smiling faces at popular tourist destinations, there are a lot of darkness and tears, bloods, sweats, sorrow, horror, and sufferings all over the country.

Plus, Saigon has a huge Chinese Vietnamese population which Hanoi doesn’t. Saying the Hanoi is more eastern oriented while Saigon is more western oriented is like saying 50 is a smaller number than 30.

I've just returned from 4 years of working abroad (UK, EU, Thai, Indo) and feel the need to delve into information on how to live the nomad life in Hanoi (I've been away long enough to see the city has been changing and adaptability is needed here), and your video popped up as the first result (good work!). Firstly, I'm sorry that you had a bad experience with Hanoi, and one week was too short to fix the bad first impression, unfortunately. As your video seems to have a wide impact, I'd like to update some information that I observed after one month of returning to my hometown. 1. The energy of Hanoi, compared to other famous SEA cities for digital nomads, is more discreet, conservative, and distancing. Even people from other parts of the country can tell. As the capital of Vietnam, it must maintain the historical vibe, and conservation is one of its strongest characteristics. I must say Hanoi needs time to be loved (always feeling strangers judging my differences, but then becoming friends for life). Hanoi people take time to get to know a stranger and decide to trust and love them. 2. Everything can now be paid for by bank transfer and QR code, even a 5k Tra Da (ice tea). However, as a digital nomad, I see opportunities: 1. Coffee shops with strong wifi, good co-working spaces, and well-kept Airbnb apartments provide a standard working environment (with gym and pool facilities). 2. Prices are reasonable. 3. Everything is easily accessible-food, entertainment, medical services-everything is very compact, just door-by-door (if you've been to Bali, you'll understand the difficulty if your Gojek driver cancels your order after 1 hour of waiting). After all, I'd like to tell all DNs who are reading this: Hanoi is not a party island, night life paradise, or a place with accessible banned activities, so I hope you don't wrongly picture the city. Hanoi is historical, old, conservative, like your grumpy old mama, but she will always love you with everything she has. In answering the question of whether you should go to Hanoi as a digital nomad, the answer is you should if you consider those points that I'd made, you'll see, learn, and discover. Maybe you'll hate it, maybe you'll like it, but I assure you won't regret ever. Peace,

As a Hanoian, I've not taken taxis for years so I don't know how they drive now. What a pity that you had such a bad impression about them, you should have installed Grab or Gojek applications to call a cab. The fare is trasparent and the drivers drive carefully.

I used Grab 2 times :( but yes i think its just different from what I am used to. But thank you Sam for commenting. Yesterday we did not take grab because we were in a rush, and a taxi driver tried to charge us 500.000 dong for what it should have been 100.000 DONG 😂😂😂 Thank God we had taken the same route before with Grab so we said "NO THIS IS NOT OKAY!" He still did not want to give us change for our 200.000 DONG bill, but that's okay! Next time we will only use Grab.

Southern Vietnam is more civilized than Northern Vietnam to some degrees. Northern Vietnam has started to develope in the decent years (after 1975) but Southern Vietnam especially Saigon (the old capital of the French and South Vietnam) has been more developed and sophisticated since the French was around. Hanoi and other smaller and northerner parts of Vietnam were distant from the world until the recent years. Also the attitudes, believes, education and family roles are differnt between the North and South of Vietnam. You could think of Southern Vietnam as being more Western influenced and and more opened to the world compared to the North. Despite the differences between the South and North of Vietnam, the whole Vietnam is trying to learn, grow, improve, and live in peace with the rest of the world.

Not true. Some problems she stated would have been worse if she went to Saigon. People in Saigon cut lines constantly doesn't matter if you're waiting for orders or filling your gas for motorbikes. Also, pickpocketers and theives are everywhere in Saigon. Saigon is a little bit more developed than Hanoi, true, but in terms of globalization, it is a myth that Saigon is more Western influenced.

I just saw a vlog of an American living in Vietnam. He is visiting family in the U.S. at the moment and said he missed Vietnam within 4 hours of being in the U.S. (He is living in Saigon.) Yesterday, I saw 2 videos of 2 pairs of American tourists in Hanoi, and they were raving and raving about it. You can find good and bad in any city. Duality is a part of life. I grew up in LA and San Francisco but now find certain parts of those two cities unrecognizable. Southern California is beautiful with beautiful beaches, palm trees, and nice restaurants, but on the sides of the freeway, I sometimes see trash overflowing. In some parts of LA, you will find miles of homeless tents and litter everywhere on the streets, and then mansions of celebrities a short drive away. I recommended my favorite parts of San Francisco to a visiting friend, and she was horrified when she saw a homeless person pulling off his pants and defecating on the sidewalk. My last visit to Argentina, I stayed in a nice neighborhood and was shocked when I visited poorer neighborhoods where the streets were dirty and smelly, and a highly recommended restaurant was totally not anything I expected. But I would still highly recommend LA, SF, and Buenos Ares. (In the U.S., sometimes people will cut in front of you in the city. But as a group, they can still be a lovely people.) I believe when you see good in everything, you attract more good and positive experiences. And the opposite is also true.

Hi. Sorry for the bad experiences in Hanoi. I was in Hanoi in 2018 as a Vietnamese American and I had the best experiences of my life. The people were polite, friendly, and very nice. Maybe you were unlucky. Yes, I do agree that there are inconsiderate people that cut in lines in Vietnam, but this can happen anywhere in the world and not just in Hanoi. The problem is that these people weren't taught properly then the culture of Vietnam. Vietnam's culture doesn't teach people to cut in lines. But on the contrary, our culture teaches us to yield to the elderlies and the disables when wait in line. I just want to share with you so you understand a little bit of our culture. I think some of your comments are valid but it also seems you didn't watch a lot of videos about Hanoi before heading there, especially for a digital nomad. Hanoi is more conservative and traditional than say Saigon. Both places are going to be loud, crowded, polluted, crazy traffic, etc. Saigon is more modern and progressive. But Hanoi has the better history and architecture left over from the colonial period, which some people say gives it more flair than a modern city with no soul. The food tends to be saltier up north vs sweeter down south....I prefer somewhere in between as I don't want things just salty, but also don't like sugar being thrown in every damn savory meal. :) But I do prefer how the south uses more herbs and such as I'm sure they grow better in warmer climate....some of the stuff you mentioned also seemed unfortunate based upon personal recommendations from friends...and honestly, some of your views were already colored by the other people before you went to Hanoi. Sammy and Tommy released videos recently of their trip to Hanoi 2 years ago that were just beautiful to watch. But they also seemed to have planned their trip pretty well as they had a food tour and whatnot lined up. In the end, you may still not like Hanoi, but I think you may have came in slightly prejudiced based on other's comments. You should hit up Nha Trang if you like beach cities...but not sure you'd enjoy it for the digital nomad life as I hear it's over run by the Russian and Chinese tourists...but it's beautiful there.

It's shy and awkward for some people doesn't know or not good at English to communicate with foreigners so you think they might not be friendly ( especially older people ). So they avoid communicating foreigners with their limit or broken english. If you have time or know Vietnamese language, you will understand the people better. It will break the ice. @@dani-moves I will explain a little bit more. Back in the days, the elder Vietnamese generation didn't learn English in their lifetime. We had a war with the Us before. I know English is a international language. I saw some comments from foreigners complaint why vietnamese doesn't speak English. English is just learnt by younger generation commonly in the school recently in Vietnam as a second language ( about 10 - 15 years ago ). Even younger generation in college is still struggling speaking English. Because you can't improve English without speaking and practicing in daily life. We only focus on learning grammar, reading and writing in the school. So if you compare the people in Hanoi with people in another cities which has tourist everyday, there are more people can speak English and work professionally with foreigners daily so you might think people in Hanoi is not friendly as people in another place. If you want a night life, you can come to another cities such as Ho Chi Minh city or another cities for traveling, we have a lot of foreigners in bar. In Hanoi, we still has a lot of bars but all business has to close before midnight 0:0. Because the people need quiet environment so the people can sleep well and go to work the next day.

I travelled all over vietnam late 2023,2024 spent most of my time in hanoi but visited most other cities and areas, sure hanoi is dirty and very busy but there is a lot more to see and do in hanoi compared to saigon for tourists, saigon is more 'westernised' , hanoi is more 'authentic' . I stayed mostly in the old quarter and think it is the best area to stay. Yes, air quality is a real problem and when its bad, its really bad, a few days i couldnt stop coughing but what makes it worth stating are all the things , places you can visit that are unique . I spent a week in saigon and ran out of things to do. Visited the north, cao bang, mong cai, the coastal route from hanoi to saigon, the inland route as well, phu quoc , but kept going back to hanoi ....

here's the thing, if you are nostalgia person, Hanoi is the best place for you. When people come to Hanoi, they enjoy the old moments in every things like streets, Hanoian, cuisine, etc but most of us chose living in Saigon because foreigners used to live in the modern way like western countries then Saigon gets many different cultures like that. Otherwise, Hanoi is a unique city because people want to keep their own culture, everything from the past, some cultures are from China but not people =))). If you want to get a challenge from new lifestyle and learn new culture, then Hanoi is the good option. To me, a both extroverted and introverted, my Hanoi is still the best.

I'm traveling in Hanoi right now and I'm not quite enjoying it yet. In overall I think it feels safe and I'm not worried about it. Today I have walked for about 12 km to see more of the city and, as you mentioned, the biggest problem is the air pollution. Everyone is using motorcycles and scooters (not electric) and it's pretty hard to breathe. Littering is also a big issue. Some areas are a bit cleaner, but other areas are miserable in terms of garbage left on the street. As for the restaurant service, i noticed they are friendly only when they want a good review from you in Google or any other app. Other than that, I haven't found anything mind-blowing that would make me fall in love with the city. On a positive note, i found a nice cafe near the hoan kiem lake and it was quite relaxing to spend time there. I will go to Ninh Binh and Sapa soon so I hope it will be more memorable.

I haven't been to Vietnam but will arriving in Hanoi in Dec for 3monhts. I think its good that your honest about your perspective. One of the things I'm doing is researching its history to better understand the difference between the north vs south, especially socially. Hanoi has been invaded and exploited by foreigners for centuries. First the Chinese, Japanese then the French. Hanoi was/is the seat of the communist government, whist HMC was the base for Americans during the American war so it has a long history with the west. The north won the war all on their own and continues to be proud and stoic. I can understand if they are suspicious of foreign influence. In a way it seems like Hanoi is the 'real' Vietnam and HMC is another Bangkok. I'm curious to know my experience after watching your review.

I thought it was just my friend and I that had these thoughts about living in Hanoi. We lived there in 2019 and it was honestly a little bit of a miserable experience due to the traffic, how dirty it was and the pollution (after 2yrs of living in China). We ended up really badly wanting to leave so once our 3mths were up (we entered on tourist visas with the intention of switching to work once/if we found jobs), we ended up moving to South Korea instead.

Some areas of the city are nicer than others but a lot of it is just construction which isn't cleared properly and burning of rubbish happens a lot but I just saw the remains left on the side of the street. For comparison, I lived in Yangzhou, for 2yrs, Nanjing for 3mths, spent a month in Beijing and have travelled to other cities in China too. I only ever saw pollution as bad as Hanoi maybe 3x the whole time I was there and all the cities were much cleaner.

You just have to have an open mind because you’re visiting another country and they have their own culture - you have to learn to respect it. If you are not open minded then stay home. In this video I share my personal experience, meaning what I saw with my eyes and experienced emotionally. This is not the ultimate truth, because it is all a subjective experience. It's a story, not facts. I still continued to do research and readings on Vietnam and have learned much more about the reasons Hanoi is the way it is. I understand it now. I still felt it was okay for me to share my raw and immediate experience, since I share with my audience what I do. And I am sorry, I have to disagree, I think I was very respectful and many people in the comments have agreed with that. I hope you can understand where i am coming from. Interesting to hear Hanoi air quality is worse than Ho Chi Minh...I lived in HCM for six months and then Da Nang for four months and the reason I went to Da Nang was because although I liked HCM, I got tired of the bad air. So Hanoi must be really bad. One thing you didn't mention, which I heard a lot and makes sense, is that the American War really defined a lot of the differences. Of course USA was allied with the South fighting against the North who were allied with Soviet Union and China...so all the fighting was in the North and against the North where Hanoi is, so they still remember. Just to paint a picture, our famous Senator John McCain was attacking Hanoi in his fighter plane and was literally shot down and crashed into the famous lake right in the middle of Hanoi...then was a Prisoner of War there. You can see video's of his capture on KZfaq.

Gave me a chance to rub shoulders with locals as well as other travellers. Street drinking is probably too edgy and grimy for the Therapist Nomad who paints a picture of third world squaller in Vietnam. I've eaten Viet street food for years and have only once felt queasy after a meal. I do agree about the air pollution though. It's a real issue in both Hanoi and HCMC. Saigon is my go to destination in Vietnam these days but I would advise to avoid going there in winter, November-February if you have respitory issues. I'm going to stay in district 7 which is less polluted.

Hi Doug, Thanks for adding value with your comment - I appreciate your feedback and I am sure other visitors do as well. It's always fascinating to meet locals and get to know more about the depths of their culture. I am really happy I visited Hanoi 🙏🏻. Maybe I am not about that life 😂, you are right. This experience was different for me, but i am learning that *different* is not bad. It's an opportunity for growth and learning from myself and others. I will still prefer a drink indoors if there is poor air quality 😂 -- considering I do have mild respiratory issues. Im sure you will have a great time. I hope to visit HCMH soon 🙏🏻

@@dani-moves Thanks for the reply. Sorry if I was a bit tough on you. Everyone is different. I try to live like a local over there. Eating Banh Mi op la street food for breakfast or Pho bo (mainly in a local's restaurant) Big positive - I feel safer going out at night there than back home. Same goes for Thailand. Great part of the world and hope you get to see a lot of it.

@@dougm3037 Hahahah it's okay! To survive in this world I have had to learn to not take things to heart. I was honestly very scared to post this video, but most of my friends and some acquaintances from Vietnam supported me. But everytime i open my comments i have to come with a compassionate and empathetic mindset so i don't end up hurt lol. Anyways, I thank you for your comments

I went to Hanoi back in 2014. I agree it is extremely dirty to the point disturbingly dirty. We got cheated twice. It is so sad! The tour company to drop us at our hotel because we have a baby, but the tour bus drop us somewhere else and refuse to take us to our hotel because it is a peak hour. He told us to find our own transport home and refused to refund us. I beg him to keep his word to drop us at the hotel because I don't want to cross the road in Hanoi, there were scooters everywhere and I feel very protective with my baby and we have suitcases to carry. He dropped us off on the side of the road. Another one was we call another tour company to go on a boat ride, we asked them if they have life jackets, especially for our baby. They said, “yes, yes, yes” again and again and the day we went on the trip, they told us they don't provide life jackets and we ended up canceling our trip and losing more money. No offense to the Vietnamese but after this trip, we realize the people are untrustworthy and unethical they will lie to you just to get your money, they have no compassion, and are very rude. I guess that's why they always win the war. I'm not saying this is all Vietnamese but this is our experience we had in Vietnam. We told ourselves we will NEVER go back to Vietnam not to mention the street is filled with litter and the air pollution is always so smoky. I seriously think Vietnam 🇻🇳 is OVERRATED.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I think that Hanoi is learning to treat tourists. I think even now in 2022, the older generation is not ready for tourists. And even the young. Only the young people in hotels know how to help tourists. I am sorry for what you went through. I do love Vietnam very much and plan to go back 💗🙏🏻. I have a lot of hope for it. But what happened to you is NOT fair and it should not have happened.

Hanoi's filth was the worst aspect I encountered. The streets, signs, and buildings were all dirty, creating a pervasive sense of disrepair. Despite living in a high-end building with a monthly rent of over $3k USD, mold infestation was a problem. Stepping outside meant being greeted by an open sewer, while pothole-ridden roads and questionable street food added to the concerns. The air quality was consistently terrible, causing worries even about walking pets. Surprisingly, the people were not as unfriendly as rumored, but overall, I struggled to find any positive aspects of the city.

@@dani-moves Fortunately, I've never been scammed in Hanoi,. At the time, my husband's generous housing allowance, allowed us to splurge on accommodation. We started in Tay Ho but later moved to Ciputra. Overall, the rental prices in Hanoi were inflated compared to Ho Chi Minh City, but what bothered me most was the shoddy craftsmanship and lack of care in the apartments, regardless of their cost. Nonetheless, I believe every experience teaches us something about ourselves, and I commend your honesty in not sugarcoating the place like many other KZfaqrs.

Lol.. Everything you said is true for the most part. Bad air quality, dirty streets, and overall hectic and busy. BUT there is so much beauty in the chaos, not to mention the incredible lakes around the city. There is an explosion of jobs for native English teachers and the nightlife is wild, you just missed it I guess. With due respect a few things, Pho is pronounced Fuh, and locals will treat foreigners different on how you present yourself. If you are just a tourist, you won’t get treated the best. But if you take the time to greet people or order in Vietnamese, it goes a long way
