Went up mount batur today and it was amazing. Wasn’t busy at all for sunrise, my guide was amazing and made us local food and had a hot chocolate on top. We got given equipment for the climb i.e head torch and walking stick. No one was pushy with trying to sell anything, everyone was lovely. Your guide was young and had plenty of information. A lot of the guides do this to earn extra money before they head off to school so that’s why some go fast. I appreciate their hustling to help their family. Scenery was beautiful. My only tip would be to try and avoid peak summer, get a tour guide and don’t be judgemental about the locals trying to support their families.

Same experience today. We have been pushed to pay 400K per person, with obligation to have a 'guide' (young local, no experience as guide), for a 2h max easy trek... I agree with you, they act as mafia ! Hopefully, this is not like this elsewhere in Bali. We did Mount Agung with a real guide, 6h+ climbing up, 5h+ to come back, for 500K, he provided sticks, food and hot tea and was so gentle. I hope that a normal situation will come back for Mount Batur...

Hi, as local but from Gianyar, I also angry with those person (not generalize all) , we face lots thing in Bali, our corruption not only in government, its happen also with local, my experience on 17 aug when we arrived at post 1 and walked we met a local online transportation driver, and intended to take us to the parking lot, but the fee was 50 thousand rupiah, because we thought it was too expensive we didn't do it, but were directed to a road that was getting further away from the parking lot. very annoyed!!! 😈 Idk why right now people nowdays become more money grubber, I know everyone need money but its to commercialized and not in proper way. I hope we can voice these things to make them realize that sustainability tourism is IMPORTANT. btw Agung have some track, try pengubengan temple, only pay 50k IDR and without guide possible the track quite clear, i heard in edelwais you must with guide. better you have local balinese friend who didn't think about money, we have lots of kind people sometimes we just met and walk together, they didn't want anything from you, even when I didn't bring medicine of stomach acid they give it to me. I hope you enjoy Bali and becareful lots of scam, and some of them might be not only local but domestic from another part of Indonesia.

We went here today and the views were breathtaking. I agree that they dont allow you to do the hike without a guide. Bali completely relies on its tourist for economy. The way I see this is by hiring a guide you are just helping a person meet his needs. Also, the country was struggling massively during COVID when the borders were closed so no hatm in contributing to boost their economy.

Yups... you're right. I've climbed last month. Too many people climbing at the same time, sometimes it becomes like a traffic jam, everyone stops walking because those above us stop walking. Sometimes the ways are also narrow and steep, only can walk by 1 person. If they stop walking, so everyone at the back will also stop

@@travelwithrafa Hi, I just visit Agung mountain on 16 aug evening till morning (almost afternoon) 17aug to celebrate Indonesia independence day, I will share my experience : via pengubengan you need to prepare entrance ticket for 50 K, but it was worted, no need guide via pengubengan, I heard if via Taman Edelweis you must with a guide, avoid national day of Indonesia and holy day of Bali if you want not crowded / get disappoint due the close of mountain (because if there is ceremony, the mountain will closed no exeception) when you back and arrive in pos 1 and walking be carefull with local motor transport, they know that we are tired and better take local motor transport to parking area but we didn't want because they ask 50 k thousand rupiah (like ticket entrance for us this is expensive though), but you know what, he show us wrong direction!!! , so that wrong direction make us walk more far from the parking area. I'm local Balinese but not from there, but I hate that person (can't generalize, all but maybe some like your experience in Batur, this is our big problem in Bali, local become more money grubber). Everything what make profit they make it, I know we all need money, but should in proper ways. hope you always speak up like this, its not about local, tourist, domestic, visitor, et cetera its about "build good relationship without scam". Mostly lots of Balinese that not from that area really kind, they ask if we have still food and water supply, even when I have stomach acid they give me medicine which i didn't bring because im not expect that disease will happen to me. just walk with them, they didn't ask money because they are hikers, not "person" who take advantage of the situation. Hope you enjoy Bali and becarefull of scammers. Have a nice Day!!

Thank you for sharing your experience! The problem is not only being too crowded. It is the mafia around it, the way they treat hikers, there are a few links in the description with other people’s experience. If you went with a pre booked guide you probably don’t see this problem but it’s quite known the mafia around it and that’s the main problem 😢

Trust me , opt for a guide for your safety over privacy . Opt for commercialization over solitude in a foreign country where chances of being robbed and raped are high. And go to non- tourist trails and places if u really wanna be soaked alone in nature mysticism( provided they are safe for foreigners)

This wasn’t my experience. It was maybe 60 people on my hike. Not that many. I will say I definitely needed a guide. I wouldn’t have made it if it wasn’t for him. He was so sweet and patient with me because I did have to stop and rest a few times. He provided food for free for our group and we took our time. Sorry your experience wasn’t that good.

I feel sad about your experience. But have you researched how many climbers without guides have disappeared and died on Mounts of Bali? All professional climbers will say that mountain climbing is an extreme sport, this also applies if you are a pro, if not you have no right to say otherwise, that climbing mountains is easy and safe. Did you know that the government has been banning climbing since last year because of the many accidents by stubborn tourists?

but not for the scam, Hey Im local Balinese also get scam by those motor transport online who will drop us to parking area from near post 1 in agung, you know how much they ask for the money? 50 K !! Crazy its a lot for local man. Even if they know we are Balinese, oh ya up to you if you said we are poor, with my all Apple gadget and cozy houses I just wanna pay what I deserve most. you know what the problem is? because we refuge him, they inform us wrong direction to parking area, they make us like walk realllllly far from before. see ? nas bedag people always be nas bedag, pemikiran tolol dan pengemis harus diberangus, bodo amat cang local lebih milih orang orang yang beradab. masalahnya service yg diberikan jleme2 local totone jele ken tai, seng ade hospitality jak local, mata duitan aja isine.

The track was in a terrible condition (probably deterioriated since you hiked it), if you sprain your ankle there is potentially no one to render you assistance other than the guide. Dear Rafa, thank you so much for making an honest video about Mount Batur. What I value most in a hike is serenity, peace and quietness so that I can breathe and connect with my surroundings. One of my biggest goals is climbing an active volcano, because my home is actually a mountain range formed by volcanic activities. But, I do want to fulfil this goal in a mindful and authentic manner. I am glad I watched your video first - it confirmed my gut feeling that the magic of Mt Batur might be in jeopardy. If you have another volcano hike you recommend in Bali, I would be so grateful for a tip. Thank you.

I hiked up Batur in February with an amazing guide, who did not rush us. I also made a new friend, a Turkish guy that was in our pickup van from our hotel. I really enjoyed the experience, it is not a technical hike. Sounds like the presenter here chose the wrong guide and suffered for it. Just because you have a bad experience, this does not sum up the experiences that others have, and certainly no reason to make a video that narrow-mindedly assumes all experiences are similar.

Just went to mount Batur, I had an amazing experience, we got lucky and we had an amazing view. Our guide was helpful and we went into our own group pace, we had a lots of stops. I totally agreed a good solution would be to involve the government to have benefits for tourist, locals and the environment. That being said probably Indonesia has bigger problems to solve first, at this moment this seems to be a white people problem. For the time being I do not care to get overcharged if that means locals are getting a benefit. PS. I really enjoyed your video, keep going!

Why is it that people are amazed to see sunrise and sunsets when on vacation? Can't you see that at home by just setting your alarm early. We did the 3 am tourist drive to Mt. Bromo to view the sunrise. The sunrise wasn't dramatic since a ridge blocked the view. The fog doesn't lift down in the caldera until 9 am. I was more amazed by all the classic Toyota Land Cruisers the guides drive, collected from all over the archipelago.

We had such an epic sunrise on Mount Batur and the fog moved and swayed as the sun rose above the horizon. It was amazing. The day wasn't hazy yet so we could see all the way to Lombok and the Gilis. The soft lighting of golden hour also makes for the best photos. It is hit or miss though, I've definitely had some poor sunrises here and there, but when they go off, man do they make for amazing memories and muses for photography.

Hi i will give some tips ya : 1. in Bali : avoid national day of Indonesia and holy day of Bali if you want not crowded / get disappoint due the close of mountain (because if there is ceremony, the mountain will closed no exception) 2. find friends local / Balinese local BUT DONT FROM NEAR THAT MOUNTAIN AREA, because as hikers we didnt take advantages of others, they are kind and they want walk together, lots of them have lots experience and know the route, I'm not recommend you go alone if you didnt know about that, quite difficult to decide need guide or not because sometimes it unpredictable, lots of case tourist who die because they obey the rules and act not in our norm. (bali area almost all sacred) 3. try hike puncak mangu / catur, its really safe to tour and people from 2 side can pass the way not like batur. its very easy to hike there, i think newbie also able to hike this mountain. 4. if you come to another part of indonesia beside bali : just becareful with the robber, rapist, mugger there are lots case, for safety bali is one of the safest island in indonesia, the minus is the local can't speak English at all, only some who can, and the good things they are not materialize like in Bali happens now.

This is the reality of Mount Batur. I did the Mt.Batur hike a month ago. I paid an entry fee of 100k. And the lady at the counter asked for 450k for a guided tour and wouldn't let me do it alone. I told her i was an experienced hiker and i wouldn't pay her and do the hike with a guide and stood in the corner thinking about driving back home.

And after a white couple were allowed to climb after they paid some 500k in total. I went to the lady and told her i was a Hindu and i was from and i wouldn't behave disrespectfully and only then she let me do the hike alone. And yeah the locals living the foothills do give you wrong directions. I took a much harder route and got lost several times, but wading through bushes hiking on the scar made by the volcano was cool and stupid at the same time and eventually i would find the actual path though. I also don't think these supposed guides won't take you on the actual hard trekking route and i say this because it wasn't that easy for me climbing uphill even after finding a proper route. I think i climbed 3 peaks in a row on that day and im one of the fittest at my mma gym, and this mountain had me rethinking my decisions lol. But i made it to the top and yeah sometimes you just try making it harder for yourself ha ha
