Before you go to PT school, you need to hear this. If you want to go to Physical Therapy school but you feel pressured or you're going into it for the wrong reasons, this video is for you. I finished 4 years of undergrad, got accepted into a PT program, and they threw me out after one semester because I got a D in anatomy. So with a useless bachelors, I decided to become a phlebotomist, which only took one month of training. working as a phleb for over a year, I stuck many patients while they were receiving PT, and the picture became very clear. The entire system is structured to :1.) suck as much money as possible out of your pockets by extending your school work with semester after semester of bullshit you will never use on the job. 2.) to take away as much precious time out of your life as possible. Years later I spoke to a friend of mine that made it out, graduated, got his DPT, and said it was barely worth it. All the time put in, the debt accrued, and what you actually bring home after taxes, its barely worth it. In the current world we live in, it's simple. Only go to school for technology based careers, because that is the future. Computer programing, web design, etc.... otherwise, you have to make your own money as an entrepreneur.

I agree with many of these points but from my personal experience, I applied to 1 private school, got in, and yes it was expensive but I took my shot. I’ve been trying to do this since I was 17. I failed a couple of courses in college which I retook, my school made me redo half the year of chem I completed when switching from quarter to semester system, and my parents were waiting for me to finish school to retire and they are headed into their late 60s. Everyone has a different path, some easier and some harder but my advice to anyone is to pursue what you like to do because you will push yourself to do well because you care. If you’re not willing to give your best and then some you won’t reach you’re full potential. I’m happy to be in PT school and proud I pushed myself to overcome so much to get into my program. I’ve met amazing people and everyone at my school from classmates to faculty are very supportive. I will strive to push hard to do well for my patients. Shout out to the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences, Miami Campus!! Class of 2022

How much does it cost D: ? And how does this work , im at my community college right now so i spend two years doing prerequisites ? Then 2 more years to finish bachelors ? For PT ? So a PT program will be two years? Or is this not counting years doing prerequsiites

@@kennygarcia102 You can search up different PT schools and from their websites the cost of their program. If you can fit all your prerequisite courses into your bachelor's degree you can get done in 4 years. It depends on the kind of student you are and how well you manage school. PT programs are usually about 2 - 3 years doing residential.

@@kennygarcia102 Some PT schools are hybrid based where you learn online for lectures and such then go to campus for lab and hands on skill application. Residential meaning you go to campus for both lecture and lab content. I'm not sure if PT schools still do on campus housing but you can always call the schools to ask. If you do summer school it can help move you along. Some of my friends finished undergrad in 3 yrs. Again it depends on how much you can handle. If you can keep your GPA strong and do school the whole year without needing a full summer break, all the power to you. Everyone is different

As someone who has been out of PT school for 4 years working in the field, I wish I had known more about the financial implications going in. The salary to student loan ratio is low unless 1.) You're able to find an affordable school or have a scholarship And/Or 2.) You're able to leverage those skills and have side gigs (private clients, KZfaq channel, blog, investments). I don't regret being a PT at all but I wished I had tried harder for scholarships and also learn to invest earlier on.

I agree with many of the points. I do feel like our money making potential is stagnant because of no fault other than our own. In my opinion, we have NOT made ourselves valuable enough to the public. Instead of being the sweet little boys and girls that kick our legs back and forth for an hour while talking about last nights game, I think it is important that we start demonstrating our knowledge and creating value beyond simply being pleasant company. With regards to ROI, cash pay has real potential for the future and I think we should focus on this. Dry needling and spinal manipulation create a serious perception of competency and value to a patient in a short period of time. As a PT, you can essentially make as much, or as little money as you'd like if you choose to be self employed. I have not met many PT's that don't want to be PT's anymore, but I have met many that don't do well in dealing with the ancillary staff status we can't seem to move past. That is OUR fault. Making the environment better is up to us. I got into PT school with a business degree undergraduate, it has helped me tremendously to have a business mindset going into healthcare.

Awesome video, exactly the reason why I change my mind during the pandemic. I love physical therapy and rehabilitation, but the supply and demand to become a physical therapist has sprouted up so high the majority of the universities are over $120,000. This video might ruffle the feathers of some people wanting to hear the warm and fuzzy stories and not look at the reality of it, but looking at the big picture you can go into a profession like nursing and get an associates degree for $5000 and make the same amount as a DPT without student debt at all. Greg Todd also did a really good video on a similar subject. Really appreciate this man

Glad I saw this video. I recently was accepted into a private program of about $200K+ and it was the only program I got into. I've been very conflicted about whether to take or not, but now I've learned that this wasn't the best option for me for PT school. Aside from the high debt to income ratio, the school had the lowest NPTE pass rate of only 80% compared to other schools in TX and you didn't have much a choice of where to go for clinicals so I could end up in an expensive state adding more to the debt. I feel horrible letting go of the only chance I have but I know there are better opportunities out there and will keep my options open.

I’m currently taking my last semester of my undergrad at CSUSM and recently I have been going through 2nd thoughts of becoming a physical therapist and instead going for chiropractor. My parents mentioned the rising number of PT’s in the economy due to covid and that they’re better off with job security than chiropractors. I’ve worked as a pt aide and seen the environment and it’s not for me. Thank you for this video, it’s not too late to change careers is it?

No it's not and it's OK if you have a change of heart from PT or chiro or whatever it is. If you have an opportunity to shadow a medical doctor (MD or DO) or Physicians Assistant you should look into those options as well if you are not 100% committed to PT. Nothing wrong with chiro either, but many chiros end up with a ton of debt and earn 60-70k to start unless they start their own clinic. I like MD/DO, PA because there's a huge need for primary care physicians and clinicians. There is a strong need for PTs too, but I'm just thinking through ideas outside of PT :) Proud of you for recognizing your 2nd thoughts and not just pursuing PT school because of your major or another reason. - Tim

Hi, I'm one year late but if you are still facing this I took the GRE in 2013 I think it was. That is a while back but the concept of the GRE doesn't change much. It is very challenging to actually prepare for the GRE because there isn't any way to study what is on it. You can practice understanding the different sections of it but that is it. You are studying for the GRE as you are functioning through your undergrad years. One thing GRE practice tests help with is building the stamina to sit for a lengthy exam. You will also need to be able to do this while in PT school and when you sit for the boards exam after graduating from PT school. That exam is 5 hours long, 250 questions. I only took the GRE exam 1 time. All of the PT's I know took it 2 or 3 times but they have said there was not much difference in their school compared to the first time.

Hi Eval. If I could add a 6th reason not to pursue PT school it would be "because I want to teach at a college level." This is especially if you're not interested in teaching PT. If that's the case, then get a masters in teaching or a PhD or Ed.D online, find a community college, start teaching, and avoid student loans as much as possible.

No, you have to look at the period of time that payment covers. Is it a semester? A year? The length of the program? It’s probably annually, so 40kx3= 120k. Before living expenses.

Would you suggest getting a masters in exercise physiology and then completing the credit points through the cleps exam to be eligible to appear for Npte and get certified as a PT?
