As a person who allowed gunslinger on the table .BE VERY VARY. It's not balanced by a large mile and needs a lot of fixing. There is a reason it's not in the official books. Do it at your own risk.

@@hauz287 Nobody has ever asked me to play a gunslinger fighter, they were playing other classes and subclasses and were interested in firearms to complement other builds.But yes I'm as careful with that kind of stuff as I am with any trusted homebrew or 3rd party content I allow or use at my table: trust but verify, and be open to changing things mid campaign if it isn't working.

Why would a character pursue a weapon type that they are not likely to know the existence of furthermore it makes the players feel like they are metagaming

@@theoldkobold Rumors travel. Merchants, sailors, pilgrims, that sort of thing carry rumors with them. Someone far away but not on the other side of the world invents a new wonderous weapon that produces huge smoke and fire and can kill a man in armor in a single shot all without magic? That's a story that's going to spread. And D&D Characters often interact with wanderers and travelers becaues of their profession. It's entirely reasonable that they would have heard these rumors. Whether they believe any part of them or follow up is up to them and their characterization.

It also helps that between the AC and the CON proficiency, it's easy to cast & maintain Bless.

I pick gunner for proficiency with firearms and you don't get disadvantage for shooting them within 5ft. and i went with the battle master subclass and use the Maneuvers and superiority dice instead of the grit and trick shots. It basically means you don't need to be multi ability score dependant. Gunslinger needs dex con and wis Battlemaster only needs dex and con

Yeah. I do not agree. First of 1d12 is enough damage. There is no point to deal 3x the damage as that is not even accurate for the time D&D takes place in. Sure. Guns are more powerful than bows and crossbows. But guns back when both crossbows and bows where used with guns also didn't have the range their older weapons had. Guns were fairly short range while crossbows and longbows were still effective at longer ranges. Misfire checks is also not a good rule. It is not a good rule for the same reason critical fumble tables are not a good rule. It just punish people for having multiple attacks or using the weapons. Based on the fact a check will eventually fail, you just punish classes that are ment to roll many attacks. Like Fighters or Monks. You also do not have those rules for other weapons, even if those weapons have just as much of a potential to misfire. The string of a longbow can snap back so hard that your wrist gets cut open with a deep wound. You were required to have armguards to protect you from that. A crossbow can break if their strings were wet, and the same goes for the longbow. With longbows you were also required to have correct posturing in order to draw the bow without physical damages to your body. If you drew a bow in the incorrect way, you might just pull a muscle or break a bone. So why do guns have misfire rules and not any other weapon? Reloading should not take an action. Guns were faster than crossbows in reloading even if they were muzzle loaded. In the rules any loading weapon such as Crossbows or Guns can only be used once a turn unless you have a feat that removes that (if feats are allowed). You are not creating workable rules this way. It just try to make guns operate to a realistic framework when nothing else operates in a realistic framework. You can not move 30ft and swing a sword 9 times in 6 seconds as well. But that is well within the rules of the game for fighters. So why are you breaking format just for guns when Guns are not that powerful, they are not that much of a game changing element and they are not even breaking the game setting and lore. If you have to reload 4 pistols maybe I can agree with you, but the whole point about the Loading property is that you can only fire once, and then reload until it is your turn again. If you want to look at weapons in the late medieval era it was known that armor had become so good that swords, spears, crossbows, longbows and even maces did just about nothing to them. This is why Pikemen were used instead. A two-handed spear with the strength of two arms had a much greater chance of actually harming someone in armor, even if it wasn't something that always worked. So even without guns, armor made these kinds of weapon obsolete. If you want something that actually causes issues in your game you have magical weapons and magical armor. Those are the issues with games, and not guns. Guns are a logical progression and something EVERYONE should want in a world such as D&D as you can leave your town and run into boar the sizes of cars, or dragons and trolls.

That depends on where you shoot them. A pistol can very much take out a bear, and a bow and crossbow can very much fail to take them out.
