I think a one-shot where a secondary goal is to find out which player is the doppelganger/changeling might be a lot of fun.

my changeling plays into the fact in 5e lore changelings are related to doppelgangers instead of fey he was discovered to be a changeling as a baby and left in the woods. they were found by a fey who became their adoptive mother and warlock patron. (in 5E game terms he's a bard/warlock multiclass) he acts as an ambassador to the material world for his mother and his excuse for his shapeshifting abilities is that hes a fey. he displays his powers openly as a performer, his bard side being acting and words of power instead of music. his goal adventuring is to find a way to become an actual fey to be able to join the fey court his mother is a part of (which in a meta sense is me wanting to play a shapeshifting fey when I can't with the official lore)

Changeling is my favorite race to play. It tends to be a struggle - when making characters - to choose another race to play as.

Mystique. Changeling one level in draconic blue sorcerer then run with rogue for the rest of the character build. Reason being you can shape-shift and you are covered in blue scales in your natural form. So far as cantrips and spells pick utility options.

I actually made a Changling character based on a 'How to Play Gandalf in D&D' video on KZfaq. Taking levels in Paladin and Bard, the reason why I chose Changling is that he's a sort of secret protector, often taking the form of an ancient, wise wizard or battle hardened war vet and using the Bard & Paladin spells in a sneaky way to aid other adventurers. The other players knew but their characters didn't so it was fun to see Gurgalog the Dwarf Fighter slay a Minotaur with the Bardic inspiration he didn't know Didorak the Dashing gave him

So in D&D changelings can be medium or small, and choose between those when they shapeshift. They CAN individually choose stuff like hair and eyes and sex, and if they shapeshift into like an aarakockra, they would have wings but they wouldn't function like wings. They'd just be set dressing.

Yes, the storytelling potential is why I'm having so much fun playing a changeling! He went a few sessions keeping it a secret from the party, but they gained his trust enough for him to tell them, and their acceptance of him was a really sweet scene for us to roleplay. I believe one quote from another player character was something along the lines of "You don't have to feel like a weirdo around us. We're all weirdos here." (Party consisted of a goblin, half orc, kobold, and a human cursed to look like a skeleton man.) My poor changeling is a bundle of nerves because he's learned the hard way that it causes less trouble to hide his shapeshifting abilities. Mechanically speaking, he's a creation bard with the criminal background. Basically he got picked up by a thief gang as a child, then trained to case houses for robbery by either disguising himself as a servant, or making a persona to befriend the house owner's child/children. But he was able to get out of that life, found out he had a knack for spellcasting through music, then became an adventurer because he wants to help people avoid the hardships he's had to go through growing up.

Not sure about Eberon, but as stated in Monsters of the Multiverse, changelings can be small or medium and shift between both but their clothing/armor/weapons and such that they are wearing or carrying with them don't change with them. That's where something like Glamoured Studded Leather Armor would come into play for quick disguises, as it can make itself look like any clothing or other armor.

I’m playing a mimic assassin rouge that can do all the regular mimic stuff, but can turn into a creature it has consumed, and it has some of its prey’s memories. His best stats are strength, dexterity, and intelligence.

My first charectar was a chanceling, but because my Dm thoung it might be to powerfull, so we nerf it to three body, and it just became a part of my backstory and coal to get my chancing ability back

I've always wanted to try playing as a Changeling, but sadly, I've never been able to find groups to play with, so all I've ever been able to do is just watch other people play D&D, like with Critical Role. But that doesn't mean that I don't have ideas bouncing around my brain for a Changeling. Such as a Chaotic Good Changeling Rogue (Arcane Trickster, so that she can gain access to Disguise Self to further aid her attempts to impersonate people....or perhaps a Wizard/Artificer multi-class to both help improve her disguises by magically producing necessary clothing/equipment [or at least illusions of them] while also making her a formidable opponent in direct combat) who had created a couple different semi-permanent identities for herself, one as a simple townsperson, and another as a traveling mercenary/adventurer. And she could be a sort of "silent protector" who skulks around in the shadows infiltrating malevolent organizations in order to unravel them from within before they can harm innocent people. But at the same time, she fears being discovered as a Changeling because she fears having a "stable" identity and friends to go along with it. She could even have some fun potential if one or more hostile Changelings/Doppelgangers are discovered, where she might try to either infiltrate the hostiles or subtly help the party discover and expose/kill them.

Most people see Rogue, (I do too), but my brain immediately yelled "Shapeshifting Monk!" I mean it has its advantages, such as turning into a much larger beefier form or a smaller form to be harder to hit and maybe a bit faster? Especially if they went to a shadow type monk. Already has ninja/spy type vibes. Step into shadow out of sight, change forms into say... an old lady, point them into the wrong direction and flee. Because of this video I just made a Doppelganger who has been pretending to be a very pale bluish Elf that according to him "drowned and was revived". I can only imagine the reaction to him not being an elf of any kind.

I have a warlock character who's a protector assimir who's sort of Mandalorianing his way through life with his god-child who he knows also isn't fully human but doesn't realize she's 1) a fey changeling, and 2) the source of his warlock powers. Granted She doesn't know she's fey either and just a kind hearted 8 year old, but I love the irony of him protecting her when his powers are from her

Been playing one myself for a while now. Take this race plus the actor feat and always Rp a different persona. Permanent advantage in deception and performance. As long as you picked bard or rouge (i like bard better) you also have expertise so now your the ultimate undercover agent that basically cannot fail at being other people.

Two questions: 1. Do you drink? Because the stuff you say is off the wall now I can't stop thinking about a drunk druid. 2. Think you can do the Mongrelfolk? They're a race of creatures that have different parts from races.

I'm playing a changeling girl who just CAN NOT act at all. It's really fun ^^

You don't have to steal identity as a changeling you do copy but can form a new identity as reference are you a twin ,cousin , or someone unrelated but with identical looks, and theoretically you can customize your second skin like altering skin color etc, and you need to stay relatively the same hieght . Also it would be your first a longest alter self that would gender you. I'm building one born as a twin with a changeling mom so my character identified as an identical twin and only learned their true form from his parents. And was raised to be paranoid of being discovered to avoid slavery.

I have been having fun hiding my ability. I don't loose my shape if I go unconscious but my GM capped my library of shapes to my intelligence score. My character was run out of town and is looking for their parents, which is hard when they're also changelings in hiding. Also my character is a druid because they're no longer comfortable living in town.

I thought of a Changeling Rogue who woke up knowing nothing except for a couple things, the fact he was a changeling, a hooded crusader, and his education, he is the only changeling in the town he lived in and that made him very closed off ( Unless he is impersonating someone ) and not finding anything for a job so he resorted to stealing, it slowly became an addiction to him and now he can’t stop thinking of how to steal something, he wants to get his memory back at any cost, I think there would be a point in the story where he resorted to murder once an interrogation went wrong Can’t think of a name though

Can't you do both, I find after 10+ years of DMing a few things have changed about how I play when I get to play For instance high numbers mean less to me I now see low stats as giving me rp moments and optimized high stats as boring unimportant, a Barbarian with high Str/Con who gets mad and breaks stuff... paint drying, a Bard with low Cha struggling to be better... EXQUISITE!... a Bardbarian with high STR/CON and low Cha with anger issues due to self hate UHH!... sorry I got overly excited And secondly I get bored playing the same character over long times Changeling gives me both an interesting rp but also let's me change when I get bored of playing the same one character when I'm so used to playing every character in the world So my concept for a changeling is more so a character that grew up hated and misunderstood who internalizes that by pretending to be whatever the situation calls for but also a rogue or a feylock who views themselves as an outsider making them lethally efficient at lies and murder with paranoid levels of trust issues

I'd role a Changeling Lore Bard with a perpetual identity crisis. Shifting form like someone changes clothes, this Changeling is never satisfied with whatever "persona" they handcraft themselves. No piece ever fits the puzzle, but they never stop trying.
