01:42 very beautiful analogy and true! 02:50 you are so right... I've found this type of exercice SOOO boring for a long time until I noticed that it could be very soothing like a yoga practise.

Special time, waiting for my slow computer to boot up in the morning. Plenty of time to practice while my computer is spooling/thinking. Meditative too🎉thank you for your encouragement ❤

Thanks for the tip of doing at the end of my practice instead of at the beginning of my practice. Love the idea of doing it at the end of the day, too.

Hi, great vid and advice. I start my day (when I can) with a variation of long tone exercises. First I feed kitty, then I go through all the notes (lower register) using my voice and my voice trainer, then hum the note into the flute (I do this with each lower register note) play the note straight. I vary where and when I incorporate the higher registers (without reference tone from voice trainer-I use the lower reg. notes that I warmed-up on as reference...the voice trainer doesn’t pick up higher notes anyway...) until I’m up at highest D. This really helps me to warm up, my main goal is to develop tone and accurate intonation doing this (flute and voice). Then, I eat breakfast! Truly long tone exercises are essential for tone development.

Totally agree. I feel like beginners are always told to practice long tones but they rarely do!

Okay I have a question I’ve been playing the flute for 4 years now and I’m practising for my grade 7. I would say I’m very good at it and I do have a very nice tone, however some days the tone just goes really bad? It’s not how I’m positioning my mouth because I’m positioning it the same as I always have and I’ve experimented but nothing changed, it’s like the sound cracks for some reason and the flute requires more air to play it nicely. It’s not that the flute is broken, I have had it checked by my teacher and she has also played it and managed to play it fine, so I’m confused as to why randomly the tone alters when I play it. The majority of the time it’s absolutely fine, and I’ll play it for a while, put it down, come back to it and suddenly the tone is bad again. Someone please give me advice!!

Hey there. Okay a few questions it’s: 1. Does your teacher agree that your flute is not great? 2. Does it often happen in lessons? 3. Does it happen at the end or beginning of a practice day or any other consistent time? 4. What do you feel in those moments? Is your embouchure tired or even sore or do you just lose control? 5. How frequently does this occur? 6. How old are you and how long have you been playing?

The Flute Practice 1: my teacher can play it fine, which is a bit of a mystery 2: not extremely often but sometimes yes, the notes break for no reason 3: sometimes happens at the start, sometimes the end. Sometimes I’ll be playing well and put it down, and when I come back the tone is weird 4: no not particularly 5: sometimes after I clean my flute it happens, although I have watched videos and asked my teacher so I know I’m cleaning it correctly. 6: 14 and I have played for 4 years, practising for grade 7. When I’m not having an off day my tone is completely fine and it does sound great, just I don’t know how to prevent that weird thing from happening sometimes

Okay great. How much time do you spend doing careful tone work? To me it sounds like you are probably at times just not finding good support and embouchure flexibility. On some days this is not a problem and you are possibly quite relaxed and doing it freely, but perhaps when you are a bit more stressed, tired or your body is just having a bad day you struggle. To a point this is normal. We ALL have bad tone days...it’s a real thing, but the more you progress the more you are able to use good support and embouchure technique to cover the bad tone days. Does that make sense? Does the sound ever completely disappear or just get a bit airy?

The Flute Practice thank you! No the sound never completely disappears or goes airy, and right now as I’m practising “La Parisienne”, it’s fine. I will definitely keep that in mind and do tonal practices and the end of every session I do. Thanks again :)
