Daniel Greene It was probably the first major fantasy series I read after Harry Potter. I was 13 which was probably a tad young for those books but I LOVED them, and still do. Personally I love Glokta the most because he’s so hilariously funny. Ferro is fantastic too, I love her character development and how she just takes no bs from anyone. One of the best fantasy series out there.

The book doesn't use a ton of overly difficult language, and the narrator has different voices for each character, so dialogue heavy sections sound like actual conversation. The narrator is also clear and concise and doesn't read rapidly. If something like Harry Potter isn't too much, I think you would be able to handle this series too.

This trilogy is AMAZING!! A co worker recommended it to me many times. I just never got around to getting the book, didn't feel like buying it, to start reading it at the time. I had way to many books I had to get to, or so I thought at the time. After about a month or so of him asking me "You read it yet?". Me telling him "No, Jon, but I will get it." He got tired of the dance and took things into his own hands. He was so sure about the books that he came to work one day plopped his personal copy on my desk and said "Read it." I glanced down at the book sitting on my desk then I looked at him, a half smile on my face and said "Ok, Jon. Will do!" nodding absently. He walked away with the look of a man that was confident that he had just given someone the keys to a door that lead to something amazing and I did. I started reading that same day and I was hooked after the first book. Before I was done with book one I bought the other two so that way I would be able to just roll on to the next one. I read all three of them back to back to back and all I could say to Jon was wow!!! We talked about things and he always had this look on his face of a man that knew what was coming but wouldn't tell me because I just and to read it for myself but man was it good. I mean the way Joe is able to seed things that you didn't even know were things that he seeded till they blossomed in the end. His ability to weave threads throughout the story and to tie them together in a satisfying way in the end is just brilliant writing. After I was done I then recommended the trilogy to a buddy who then did what I did and kept saying he will until I gave him my bought copy and then he too fell in love with the books and has since surpassed me in reading the extended work beyond the trilogy. Bottom line. If you like GOT or LOTR or anything like that you will love this series!

I just started First Law to read in between Wheel of Time books and I love this story so far.....there's so much dark humor, and gritty reality to the descriptions and all the people. I like dark fantasy because authors like George R.R Martin and Joe Abercrombie don't hide from filth and hunger and disease and pain but they don't overuse it either. It all has a purpose. Characters suffer for a reason not just for the gore factor, or the "gross out" as Stephen King calls it (which I do enjoy as much as the next person but is something I read horror for, not fantasy)

The characters, the believable plot progression, the tone. Everything. I feel a personal connection to his characters that no other author has managed to create. What I absolutely loved about these books was the way the author used inner dialogue and catch phrases. So hilarious, and really just gave that extra dimension to the character. Possibly my favourite series, though I did find it almost depressing at times and came away feel quite hopeless not going to lie. Still picked up best served cold though, and I can say that whilst no character will likely top glokta, the prose in the later novels is even better than the trilogy, a contrast of poetic beauty at times (yep he's actually surprisingly poetic) and to the point, harsh, vibrant and gritty descriptions. You can really tell Abercrombie has honed his craft, though the plot in the stand alones is quite simple (that doesn't matter to me, he's kinda like the Tarrintino of fanatsy, sort of). I also loved how at times when a certain troupe was being used, it was like you as the reader could tell abercrombie was aware that he was using almost a cliche, and have the character remark on it, no doubt saying something sarcastic and witty, showing us how the author is aware of what device he's using. I've honestly never read something like this, Daniel compares it to ASOIF which I also love, but its really different in my opinion.

Agree, a very great story and plot - I never directly compared it to GoT but looking back I can see how they line up. Im on to Stormlight Archive now based on your 'why you should read' for that one - about 20% into book 3 and really appreciate the recommendation.

I think ASOIAF gets a bad reputation for not having good guys unfairly. There are good guys, the thing is they are not as heroic as good guys usually are in most other series.

I wanna add that there are literally moments where I laugh out loud at these books, despite the gritty tone. Actually, the juxtaposition of gritty tone and lighthearted moments might contribute to the comedy (well not exactly lighthearted, some hilarious moments are during torture sessions…)

Ardee was my favourite character. I wished there was more of her, but in general, Abercrombie did an amazing job of telling us about each character and letting g them develop in a way that made sense.

the thing i love about being a book reader is you are never out of great stories to read and world that will truly hook you and invade your mind. In movies, theres only a handful of epic fantasy that are great, and even fewer in video games. in all other mediums it seems like the list of truly great works that will keep you up at night wondering what will happen next is nothing compared to literature, in fact i often feel overwhelmed with books I want to read and worlds i want to know, and with flm/tv or games, I'm often left wishing there was more to enjoy.

I really like the First Law trilogy. I've read Best Served Cold and... the one about Bayaz and the cannons, and they are good, but I think the trilogy is better. I think it is because there is a little bit more mystery as to what is really going on, and I like magical elements and there is some fun magical payoff in the first three.

Great video. Its refreshing to see the opposite of gatekeeping going on. It helps me as a reader (who is 2/3 through the first book and koving so far) to not have someone reviewing from behind a wall of assumed lore. We need more of this style of booktube, and less of people that think you can't have an opinion on Tress because you havn't memorised the entire coppermind.
