We can’t get rid of anxiety and depression, so we might as well talk about it, says depression truth-teller Adam Whybrew. Sharing his own experience with mental illness, he reveals the surprising benefits of opening up about stress at work - and why being vulnerable creates a safe space for everyone.

What you talk about needs to be determined by the environment you're in
@nothinginteresting1662

Why? Only because people judge. If people were accepting instead of judging you for what you feel, this thought of environment dependence would never have come up in the first place.

People are struggling with anxiety and depression due to work because of the work. Management has never been more toxic in and outside of the workplace. And now, union jobs are being erased, so we're getting less money, fewer benefits, less being treated like people, and more like robots. If we call off a few times, we can get fired. If we screw up or just have an accident, we get punished and humiliated. We are expected to do our jobs perfectly, every time, all the time, for not enough money to live on.

Believe it or not, the stigma on mental health is real. People would sympathize with you if you are physically ill. But mentally- they would run away far from you. And those "dear" to you would do everything in their power to stop you from talking about your experience. Because they don't want to associate themselves with a "fool". It is completely considered not okay to talk about your mental instability, no matter the awareness campaigns. It is not even an illness per se. I would say that majority of these conditions are a reaction to the fast-paced, urgency-driven, performance-based, do-or-die, dog-eat-dog world we have come to accept as reality. Mindfulness definitely helps.

It’s not that they would see you as a “fool”. It’s just that it makes them uncomfortable and they don’t know how to empathise correctly.
@nothinginteresting1662
@nothinginteresting1662 Ай бұрын
@@smathew8810 Why is that experience not allowed to be talked about then? It's not just about being uncomfortable. It is being uncomfortable to such an extent that that they would rather deny the experience and try to bury it as being irrelevant- as if nothing ever happened. They would rather prefer that you are wrong for feeling what you felt, not try to understand why you felt what you felt. You know, 'sweeping under the rug'. But pretending that the house is clean by sweeping all the dirt and garbage under the rug doesn't make it clean. There is something called as Emotional Healing. That is more in line with what needs to be done.

@@nothinginteresting1662 It seems to me that you're both right. Some people dismiss your feelings because they see you as foolish or just a whiny kid. Others do it because they don't know the right way to respond to your experience, mistakenly believing that downplaying things can ease your pain. Sometimes, fully accepting someone's painful experience is as challenging as confessing my own struggles to others. That's why professional help is often necessary. But I fully agree with your view on the social stigma surrounding mental health.

How about job stability, livable wage +20 to 30% for extras, career plans, relocation plans for when you find out that job isn't actually for you, and low tolerance for any kind of harassment? That would solve 95% of all job anxiety in our industrialised world.

When I was stressed at work, I would come home thinking about tasks and problems I needed to solve the next day. Eventually, I started talking about it with my colleagues. Within a month, we were all discussing work problems every day and remained stressed. I quit my job six months ago.

So how do you deal with people that you know or lying to you, subverting you, basically trying to shut you out. Won't let you do your job that you were hired to do regardless of your skill level? How do you deal with punks like that?

You gotta leave. Toxic situations usually don't get better on their own. I made many moves until I found the right place and have been at my current job for 4 years working for/with nice people. I had to go through MANY trash places first. Treat it like dating, it's not a marriage. If it's not the place for you, keep looking.

Something that helped me was this quote: "Anxious people think too much about the future. Depressed people think too much about the past. Balanced people think about TODAY." So as much as you can reduce your thinking to just today. Good luck

If you see an awareness campaign by a corporation that you work for, it is purely virtue signaling. You will be churned right out if they find out you are suffering from a mental illness as it hurts their bottom line. Save the mental health conversations for the therapist, not with HR or colleagues. They aren't there for that and will often betray you. Even if they don't, it's too big of a risk to take.

Ah yes, volunteer your emotional information so that your employers can leverage it against you as they have been doing to you collectively for decades. This time they have AI, but they won't exploit you with it this time, right? Keep them in the dark because they are in asymmetric warfare with you. Never forget that.

God loves you and cares for you so that this message reaches you. God is the one who created this large universe and controls it completely. The greatest loss a person loses in this life is that he lives without knowing God who created him and knowing the Messenger of Muhammad, the last of the messengers, and the Islamic religion, the last of the heavenly religions. Great intelligence, before you believe in something or not, is to read it, study it, and understand it well, and after that you have the choice to believe in it or not to believe in it. I advise you to do this now, before you no longer have time to do so. Life is very short. It is just a test, just a passage to eternal life. Great advice to those who... Understands

Meanwhile, companies will do anything to not give insurance, and give "resources" for therapy that are almost impossible to qualify for. I'm glad your green force field and your imaginary button work for you. Can your regular employees afford professional help?
