G'day, Arkforest here. I will be explaining why I use Ardour as a DAW and why I recommend using it over many other DAWs like FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, and many others.

I will admit Ableton Live would be a nice distro to use, especially for certain kinds of music, but I really don't like how it is designed as "software as a service", which means it's useless if you can't maintain your subscription.

Instrument sources? If you mean virtual instruments, I recommend Vitalium, Odin2, ZynaddsubFX and Surge XT for synths. For samplers, I recommend LSP Multisampler, as part of the LSP suite. For soundfonts, I tend to use General MIDI Synth, but if you don't have access to that, using Sfizz or Calf Fluidsynth to load soundfonts will do.

Hi when starting Ardour, it makes me choose input and out put device. I use a separate mic and a separate headset but Arour only lets me choose ONE and cancels the other. How do I fix this? Thanks in Advance
@ArkforestMusic

That seems strange. I think both can be chosen separately, even if they're plugged into your computer's 3.5mm jacks rather than a separate interface. Unless you use a microphone that doubles as an interface, I think your problem shouldn't be too big.

Ez I use guitarix plugins to do the trick. They have DS1 and MXR pedal emulators, for example, and cab emulators for Marshall heads and the likes of that. Rakarrack is potentially another option but I believe that works better as a live effect rather than with a daw, so i would recommend guitarix. Be prepared to automate mutes, though. I think you can learn about how the different instrument and effect plugins work. I think some good soft synths to learn are Odin2, ZynaddsubFX, Vitalium, Helm, etc. As for EQs and compressors and other things, I recommend LSP Parametric EQ, LSP Compressor, and Dragonfly Hall Reverb. Hey, thanks for the video! One question, if you will. Why do people even bother to choose? Like, I have Ableton and on PC, FL studios on Android phone. And garageband on iMac (favorite for on the go rn). I have koala sampler as well as other synth apps and things. I am aware of open source, but why do we seem to collectively seem to think we have to be monogomas to one daw when different ones have different functions? I think GarageBand works near flawlessly for getting the basic progressions and beats down. Koala makes things weird and loose. Ableton is a powerhouse with my push 2, but honestly, pretty underwhelming on the less live aspects and makes itself less approachable for casual recording. I mostly just use for mastering and want to learn to use it for live performances. All 3 of these synergize well for me personally. But also just curious what's out there. Starting a harem of daws I suppose.

What interface do you use? I currently use a Scarlett 2i2 and it works out of the box for me. In the video, I was using a Presonus Audiobox. I do know that for the distro I was using, to make Jack work, one of the overlooked crucial packages you need to install is libffado along with jack, alsa, pulseaudio, and the respective packages that connect each of those three with each other. For an interface to work with mostly Jack, I used Cadence from the KXStudio repos rather than qjackctl, though you can try qjackctl too. A lot of this would be in the Arch Linux wikis, or the wiki or manual of your respective DAW. This advice worked for Obarun Linux, which I was using at the time.

I don't think Ardour is simple at all, and some of its features are very limited: for instance, it cannot be used to time-stretch individual sections of a waveform (you must edit the entire track or none!). And if a section of a waveform can be quantized, nobody to date has been able to share steps that work. The manual typically focuses on the 'what' and not the 'how', so it is utterly useless. If you are able to quantize a section of a track, with the waveform visible (so that you can identify the start and end points), pleeeeeeaze share the steps...you will be the first.
@ArkforestMusic

i would politely suggest that time stretching the entire waveform as a copy, and then editing the copy or the original is much more useful than being able to stretch and edit individual sections because u are forced to identify the point at which u wish to begin an edit AGAINST a copy or an original. i see this as a plus and not a minus
@TheBinaryWolf
@TheBinaryWolf Жыл бұрын
@@sonquatsch8585 Quantization is simple for computer generated music, but few are able to efficiently tighten a live recording of a musician whose timing is a little too loose. It's also packaged in the standard repos for many distros, and getting a distro tailored package would be better for your distro than a universal flatpak, otherwise if your distro doesn't have one, either use flatpak or an AUR equivalent or git clone the source and compile from scratch.

Coming from Ableton & some other higher end DAW's, Ardour is a huge downgrade. Unfortunately, all the DAW's i use don't run native on Linux. Running them in wine or what have you is fine until you start getting into 20+ tracks, then they start having issues. Then there's hardware & plugin compatibility issues, authentication issues, list goes on. Music is the single activity that I keep a windows loaded drive around for. These free and open source programs just don't hold a candle to the higher end softwares unfortunately.

YOu say it's better than pro logic anc cubase! Have you tried these for any length of time? I agree that it would be better than the comic book that is FL Studio and Ableton. But not Cubase. Cubase's extensive mixer and control room is 2nd to none. Years and years of development is behind cubase whihc can't be said for Ardour. To say a Ardour is better than Cubase or Pro logic is a very inexperienced thing to say and it would seem as though you've really not tried Cubase to any great level or found it a bit above you head.
@ArkforestMusic
@ArkforestMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Realistically all of the DAWs do the same things slightly differently. I wouldn't mind trying Cubase one day, but Steinberg is not likely to open source it. Ardour probably has the same features it advertises with its marketing jargon anyways, like MPE and other stuff. Plus it's free and open source. At the very least, I would say Cubase is better than Logic Pro, since Logic Pro requires certain external hardware to function properly.

Software being written in C++ does not automatically make it faster than other software. By far, the most important factor in software performance is lowering CPI, increasing parallel instructions by carefully designing code to execute instructions in parallel, and making careful decisions memory and data design. None of those have anything to do with C++.

Well, if spending like $ 500 for a DAW you really love is an issue, then you might be in the wrong business. Most pro DAWs will last you at least 5 years with regular free updates for the version you bought. That’s $ 100 per year. That’s 0.28 cents a day. It’s 0.03 cents an hour for 8 hours a day. It’s 1/4 the price of your daily espresso coffee. How about buying a bit cheaper coffee ? That would make your DAW « free » at the end of the day….? And producers and composers aren’t all computer geeks. The vast majority need to actually make music and just need an efficient complete Tool easy to use. Pro DAWs have way enough flexibility and user adjustable features to please hard working musicians. So the « free » argument is not an issue for the pros out there. The personal preference is.

i think you're missing the point, the author clearly likes open source software, otherwise known as "free" software, free as in freedom, not cost. Ardour actually costs money but you can build it for free, plus, you can study the code, edit the code, patch it yourself, extend it yourself, if you're so inclined, etc. just like anyone has tastes for music, food, partners, etc. some people like 'free' software (open source) for various reasons, often for idealistic/philosophical reasons.
