The Mercruiser quick drain system is a great way to drain water from your engine quickly but be sure to verify that all your hoses and fittings are clear of debris or you risk leaving water in the engine.

Just pull them off at the block. Use mechanics wire or something to poke out the block. If your concerned about water in that lower manifold, just use compressed air to blow it out. Run antifreeze as a back up.

My 305 doesn't have a quick drain and agree this can be done easier Question I want to just install 4 tubes to the drain unite them to one point and add a plug for draining all water and have the hose lay under the front of the engine (harmonic balancer) do you know what size fitting would fit in the manifold plugs? I tried a few from my air compressor and pressure cleaner but none fit seems it's a differ thread my 5.0 is a 96-97 efi alpha

Not sure about your model year but the drains are usually 1/4 pipe thread and the blue Mercruiser drain plugs are 1/2 -13

Did you add the quick connects from the block to the main drain line that you show or were they there? If they are already there, I am going to start popping them off. I usually open the drain and then remove the thermostat housing then pour antifreeze down into it making sure it comes out of the drain. Could it be possible that water could be trapped inside one side of the engine doing it this way? I also do the same to the manifolds, pulling the inlet hoses and pouring antifreeze through them one at a time, making sure it comes out of the drain.

The quick connects are part of the quick drain system that was factory installed from Mercruiser.

@@hookedonboating4750 I believe the quick connects were on both ends. I sold the boat a few months ago so I can't verify that. Engine was a 2003 5.0MPI

@@fixinstuff ​ Hmm, I have a 2003 5.0 MPI and I just did winterize it. No quick connects on the plastic manifold where they all connect. I was going to try to pull the hoses off but I was afraid I would crack the plastic manifold. I ended up pulling the hoses off at the bottom of the block (had quick connects there), which were no fun to get to, and only had trickles out of each side. I pull the T stat housing and pour AF from the top. Ended up clearing both side out with a wire and the AF poured out freely. Poured two more gallons it and it drained nicely out of both sides. Glad I saw this video, appreciate you putting it out there

On this drain system is there only the two blue plugs plus the main drain knob?

Mercruiser has several different configurations. This engine has two. One on the thermostat and one at the bottom of the quick drain. Without quick drain should have one on each side of the block and one on each manifold.

I think if you drain it every time you get it out of the water it won't clog.

Your premise that there is still water in the block or manifolds because no water flowed out of that line is faulty logic. To test your theory you must open the single point drain and then immediately remove the plug on the T stat housing as prescribed and let it drain for 5 minutes. Then, start opening other hoses and the 4 drain plugs and show us the water that you found still inside the engine. I bet you wont!

You are correct the plugs on the thermostat and lower drain need to be removed for proper draining. There are only two plugs on this engine and not 4. This video was not a tutorial on how to drain your engine but to inform that clogs in this quick drain system can happen and potentially leave water in your block. The hose in this case was clogged preventing water from the port side of the engine from draining. Even if all the water in the block was drained, water left in the hose would freeze and potentially weaken or burst the line.

@@fixinstuff how many blue plugs and how many quick disconnects are there on this engine with the single point drain system? 1 on thermostat and 1 on the bottom where water comes out for the single port drain. Is there one on the sea water pump?

@@1Maxymillion This is an Alpha One so the pump is in the stern. Only 2 on this engine, one at the thermostat and the other on the lower drain.
