Why You Struggle with the Continental Volley Grip and How to Fix it (Quick and Easy)
Tons of players struggle with the continental grip on the volley. This is particularly true in the forehand volley. It often feels awkward, uncomfortable and even wrong. This is simply because your not doing it right. If you struggle with the continental volley grip then it is almost inevitable that you have the issue I discuss in this video. Also you will surely go back to your old grip without this valuable tip. There is one thing you must do that will literally immediately make this continental grip much more comfortable and easy. The continental grip is key because it the most versatile grip by far. It will allow you to be able to deal with any ball coming your way as well as hit anything from a drop or angle volley to a put away volley winner. Learn to use a grip that will give you the highest ceiling, allowing for power and control. You’ll see slow motion video from multiple angles and a great, simple drill that will force you to do the technique correctly and help you get rid of the bad habit. ENJOY!

Lots of good tips on the forehand volley. Thanks, Jeremy! Being a lefty, I am sensitive to comments that pertain only to righties like "if you don't turn on the volley you will hit the ball to the left." Of course, for lefties this will result in hitting the ball to the right. I fear that there will be a few lefties who don't realize this when you don't mention anywhere that you are talking about right-handed technique. I think just a single comment early on reminding lefties to reverse the direction statements will help avoid confusion to those few who don't realize the issue.

Hi Jeremy, I so agree about the grip. I battled with an instructor about my v "off" continental grip thst I developed naturally to avoid wrist pain. However I struggle with multiple fast back and forth volleys. Any tips? Miss you, please stay healthy

Can you do a video on how and when to step into the ball? I catch myself waiting for the ball often even when I have time to step into it and really hit it with power. Often or return of reserve and during rallies. Have you discussed this in a different video or can you coach on this concept?💪🙏👍

deemahdee what do u mean by step into the ball and especially for which stroke?
@deemahdee

@@FundamentalTennis thanks for the reply. I feel like I put in way more energy into my swing than what I actually get out it in terms of the pace of the ball. I feel like I'm missing a fundamental or something... Maybe it's leg drive or hitting the ball further in front, or maybe it's just stepping into the swing more. I don't know really. But I've noticed if I can time the contact better when I go after the ball as opposed to waiting for the ball to come to me the shot is much cleaner and harder. I'm taking about groundstrokes and return of serve. Hope this makes sense... Trying my best to explain. A player was pointing it out to me the other day that I need to bend my knees more and step into the stroke more but creating enough time to do this regularly is difficult technically and physically.

Hi Jeremy! Let me first say, I am a beginner, at age 70 (as of next week). I began playing in January; subtract two months of Covid-19 shutdown and you'll get the picture. I have looked at online instruction from--literally--dozens of teachers, and I find yours the most insightful and informative, by far. A quick question: in one video, specifically on serve grip, you speak to a progression on how to properly use the continental grip. Later, in a second video on using a "weak continental" grip, you modify the grip, stating that it should also be used for serves. The date difference in the two videos was about four months. Can you speak to this, please. Did something shift for you? A sudden insight? What changed? Thanks for your always interesting, and often amazing, content!

Grip changes for almost each stroke. Continental for serves and backhand, weak continental for volleys and overhead, eastern/semi western for forehand.
@watcher687
@watcher687 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeremy I think there’s another option you didn’t mention. By the way I’m only talking about forehand volleys. You say it’s impossible to use the continental grip if you don’t turn. Have you thought about the role of the wrist extension (bending it back)? That seems to fix that problem. Federer does that if he doesn’t turn his torso much. With the wrist extension the racket face suddenly becomes square to the incoming ball even with minimal or no turning.
@FundamentalTennis
@FundamentalTennis 4 жыл бұрын
Yucel Guldali hi Yucel, if you use a true continental grip with no turn then you can only hit it to about half of the court unless you take your arm way back. Wrist extension will not allow you to hit the ball inside out or even down the line. The point is not turning is why players hate the continental grip when they give it a try.
@watcher687
@watcher687 4 жыл бұрын
Fundamental Tennis I just wanted to mention the wrist extension as a factor that I have observed. Otherwise I agree with your points and the importance of shoulder turn of course. Thanks for the video.

@@yili9725 This is confusing. The video says that there is not enough time, especially at higher levels, to switch grips. So I understood that to mean we are using the modified weak continental grip for forehand AND backhand volleys... But now he is saying to use two grips. Which contradicts the advice that a single grip is optimal.

if you dont turn the strings are facing to the side , ok , but if you use your arm like you do when you turn your shoulders then the strings can face in the right direction, dont they ?? i dont need a bodyturn with a 45degree angle to get the strings pointed in the direction.

Fundamental Tennis , hi Jeremy. I'm new to your channel, and tennis as well. I read in one of your replies that you're in the D.C. area. I grew up in Baltimore, and my daughter and her family still live and work in that area. I have no vested interest in what I am about to share. I retired long ago and now live in Japan. You may find that visiting a good practitioner of acupuncture will give you some needed relief. There is a school in Laurel, MD (my alma mater). It should be easy to find via the Internet, but should you have interest and get stuck, let me know. I would be happy to help--you have sure helped me a bunch. Thanks for all your great work... be well! A delay PS... if you are happier not doing more instructional videos, please allow that happiness to continue guiding you...
