You might think that some people are lucky to have found their passion but I think that some of the most successful people are just good at finding lots of things interesting. You could take that passion away and they would be happy to find a new one.

The idea that everyone has this thing called their 'passion' is a middle class fantasy. Most people might have a few interests, but nothing that they want to throw their whole life into. There's nothing wrong in not having a 'passion', the idea that you should have one is just a value that doesn't mean much in reality. The truth is, most people just want a fairly simple life. Friends, family and a job they don't hate - and if that's all you want don't let anyone tell you that's not good enough. People are brought up with this fantasy that they will make a huge impact in some area of life - in reality the vast majority of human beings don't, and when you realise and accept that you will be happier.

The sad truth is that the simple life and "success" defined as monetary/being the best are often two things mutually exclusive. Passion is the gateway to success in that regard, an if and only if to achieving it. Of course this is not true of every passion, but of many. A passion well-developed brings success. And no passion at all at most brings adequacy. The fact is some of us do have to be those who make huge impacts - and I intend to do my best to make mine the biggest it can be.

Good point. Passion is not a rigid entity that can only be defined for one moment of time- its an integral of the things that you are familiar multiplied by what you're good with over a given amount of ∆t.

Passion as a mindset rather than as something innate in us to discover is a great way to word it. Personally Ive always had many interests, though music being the primary of these, and when I started to explore more of the sciences I stumbled upon your videos. Since then I've realized that even though I may sometimes feel like an outsider to the field, no one can stop me from being passionate about both music and science simultaneously. It was only the dedication to keep learning more and pushing forward that makes it a passion. Thank you for your videos, they push me to keep learning.

Most people think i'm passionate about computer science and science in general but actually i just curious and i like learning new stuff and trying new things. i like too many things to say that i have a single passion really but i'm neither passionate about any of them, i just like doing it. the idea that everyone should or have a passion is kinda hollywoody flawed.

I feel the exact same way. I think if I had to define my "passion" it would be learning about things, but it's not every hour of any given day that I am in the mood to learn. Also we have to work and to work you need to specialize so choose one thing that you tolerate and/or your circumstance makes it easier to pursue and go for it.

Thank you for saying that. So many biographical works tell about how the subject became interested in their field at a young age. For example, his grandfather gave him a telescope when he was 3 years old and he went on to become the Astronomer Royal. That is so different from my own life experience that I wonder whether the tale is nonsense or there is something wrong with me. I'm glad to know someone else has no predetermined passion that guides her life.

Passion stories are not fairy tales, they're just stories of the small subset of people that choice to specialize their interests. My mother and her two sisters each received an instrument early on in their lives. One of my aunts is now finishing her PhD in a music-related field while the other two sisters have not played their instrument in years. It's only natural that having access to a certain subject early on will give you a head start in that field, but what you actually devote your time to, whether that's one activity or many, is entirely your choice. I, for one, enjoy the idea of having general knowledge about as many fields as possible. I will of course specialize for my career, but I will always have an interest in more fields than not.

passion is a venn diagram. it's not just 1 thing. generally they are 2 or 3 very marked interests. and what is at the center of that venn diagram. It would be your vocation or passion. usually related. example: biology, chemistry, = biochemistry economics and psychology = business. people lie to themselves. for the possible future that you can have economically with the career you chose. or that it does not look good in society. (example art) The only people who have their passion well defined almost at a pathological level. They are the Asperger's. less than 0.1% of the population. the geniuses of this world. einstein, newton, tesla.

This is a surprisingly important message. I once distanced myself from what would eventually become my career because I did not feel “passionate” about it. Luckily my road in life brought me back around to it. It has given me a path to follow that truly interests me and challenges me. It has also afforded me the opportunity to pursue other activities about which I am perhaps more passionate. Find something that interests you and that has some value to the world (because you need to make a living) and fail and fail and fail until you are good at it.

I believe this issue is related with depression since you start to lose interest in pretty much everything. On the other hand with a joyful heart everything seems extraordinaire.

Yeah that's what I understand passion as, and I don't have anything like that I'm good, even great, in a lot of things A Jack of all trades if you will The nerds of science ask me for my intuition and understanding, mildly successful in sports etc. I'm interested in a variety of things but it never goes beyond a curiosity and I do think that life would be much better if I had a passion I guess the misconception is that a passion is one defined concrete thing but one could have multiple vague passions, the requirements or traits of each passion being things as simple as mentally stimulating or beauty or whatever

i thought i was passionate about mechanics. then i moved to electricity, later i decided that robotics is where my passion lays. but after giving it some thought, i found out that what i want is to create. so i thought what would give me the most "power of creation" and that led me to software, i am now addicted to it and i enjoyed every day in the university and for 3 years now, every day at work. i did "find my passion" rather than create it. mine was to create

Yes! Sorta similar here. Coding is definitely my passion, but I like doing other things that involves creating too. Cooking, writing, making music, cg art. I'm good at coding, decent at cooking, and terrible at everything else haha

when you say "what would give me the most 'power of creation' and that led me to software" I can understand this. I've tried to learn skills that would be useful in many projects. But it seems what your passion is not just to create, you want to "create powerful things" and software definitely qualifies. If it was just "to create" you could have chosen art or music or writing, which are still powerful, but they require human beings to internalize them first, whereas software is something that exists on it's own once it's been made. But software is a big area. What kind of software? Application software to be used by people? System-level software like operating system utilities? Operating system kernels? Embedded systems? device drivers? Simulators? Scientific computing? Hard real-time software? The power of software comes from it being an algorithmic implementation of some process or computation that people find useful or utilitarian, and instead of hard-coding digital hardware as was done in the past (or adjusting resistors and capacitors with analog hardware before that) to implement the algorithm or computation, you just write up a text file and compile it and through the stored program concept, you have reconfigured the machine to do some other function.

100% agree. This is my exact situation. And I'm fine with it. You truly have to make yourself love things that you're interested in. It won't happen naturally. It's a mindset thing that you have to force yourself into.

This was me for so long. I was interested in so many different sciences and other ideas, still am. But like you have said, you have to realize to just pick something and run with it. If you don't actually like it, then you know it's not your 'passion'. I think all these essays and using the word "passion"make us question who we are. Passion is so misleading and for a long time it got to me because I saw others as passionate about one thing or another. Now I realize I'm lucky that I find many things interesting and instead of looking at it as a pessimist, I am grateful. Thank you for covering this! I've never heard anyone talk about it before.

Love your video. You totally read my mind. Lots of people are fortunate or unfortunate to have a fixed passion for somethings while others comparing themselves with the former find quite hesitant to honestly admit that they dont necessarily have a fixed passion for a certain thing and are yet to find one or choose not to jump to conclusions. It needs lots of guts to admit in public whatever you have shared so frankly and effortlessly.

Thank you for this video. You made me realize something that I hadn't thought of before. I've long said that one of the ways people generate greater value in things is based on how much effort they put into it. But I just realized, one of the most influential forms of that effort is _plowing through the failure._ When you fumble and other people see you fumble, how you respond in that situation will likely determine if that activity will have greater value to you in the future. Anyone can start learning about something their interested in, but not everyone views failure the same way.

I recently just came across your videos and as a first year undergrad who is studying physics as well they’re really helpful and motivating. This one is especially great because I sometimes have doubts on whether I should be studying physics. I sometimes think it’s too difficult and it is just like a hobby to enjoy physics, but hearing you say that physics was, at first, just something to enjoy and now you’re so successful in your studies makes me realize that I can do the same thing. This was just very motivating so thanks!

I struggled with similar question when I was 12 years old, "what is my favorite animal?" Framing the question like that, one assumes that there IS in fact a favorite animal. Or if someone asks "What is your passion?", then you assume that yes, you must objectively have one. But I agree with your comments, Tibees.

I just found your videos and you put a huge smile on my face! Short story about me: I went back in time (memory) to when I was about 2 years old and found that I was intrigued by light. Up until 40, I've been heavy into electronics and technology but just recently found that those were just tools for my true passion, physics! As Terence McKenna once said "for only in memory is the past recaptured and understood", I've gone back to my earliest memories and recaptured that feeling inside me. Maybe it's some natural ability I was unaware of because I've never tried truly perusing it. I sometimes can visualize things happening at any scale but have no educated way of explaining it. I like math but it's always been my weak point because I never took the time to try understanding it. I've realized that math is a language of its own and in order to be taken seriously in physics you need a good math skills. If a fulcrum is the support about which a lever pivots, then physics is the fulcrum to nature and math is their relationship. You aren't an Aries by any chance are you?

I was always interested in physics/ astronomy but my dad told me to go in engineering so I went and got a diploma in civil engineering but couldn’t get a job in it. I then got a job in accounting and started perusing a professional diploma in accounting but now after spending nearly 6-7 years of life studying things that I had no interest in I have decided to pursue a degree in theoretical physics/ mathematics and by the end of it even if I don’t get a job I’ll still be happy cause at least I would have done something I actually enjoy for the first time in my life.

Yeah you are right. Actually you become interested at what you are good at. No one is born to have a destined passion, its matter of choices. I think people who are interested in math or physics or unravelling how things work are lucky to have developed such a passion. Sometimes your passion changes over time, but thats not a bad thing because your interests chooses your passion not the passion chooses your interests.

This is why I think work-life balance is important. Do what you have to do to pay your bills, and pursue your passions in your time off from work. Now when you don't have any time off from work, that's not good. I feel like the world is trying to push us in the direction where we're supposed to LOVE our career so we'll be on the job all the time. I don't like that, and I do what I can to fight against that. If I had no work-life balance I would have NEVER had a chance to study geodesics. Instead I'd just be filing some more receipts somewhere. Boring!

I understand your sentiment... From my personal perspective, I prefered having several 'little' passions instead of a big one. I think there is no shame to scatter to find who we are and what we like. I am passionate about fantasy litterature, video games, theater, but I would never imagine them as another thing that 'passion' (which are very important in my life). Physics and science in general were also a passion, and it was clear from my young age that I would pursue studies in astronomy. So I kept this idea all along and I succeeded a bachelor in thesis, and now I am about to begin my second and last year of master in astrophysics. Yes I always found people better than me in all my passions, yet the most important for me is to share that passion :)

What i have understood about passion is that it encourages your brain to do it more , to give more of your time for it so much that other things become either less attractive, boring or aggress your brain . It is all about your enthusiasm to do something .

Ultimately you are sacrificing a significant portion of your finite existence to a particular field of interest. That isn't a small sacrifice. The choice in that is partly shaped by your value system and upbringing, but I don't think it's out of the question to say that there are inherent parts of ourselves that shape that to a great extent. Even if you could reset your life to some arbitrary point, I think there are fields that you would not be interested in. The key for me has been to find the common denominators between fields of interest and explore the interconnection between them. You'll never be bored. For me, I grapple with the interplay between music and objective fields like mathematics.

Haven't read that one, but Ill put it on "the list" of things to read. I do use a fair bit of the acoustic principles studied by Hemholtz. It's easier than ever to incorporate it into music compositions with the use of DSP and quasi real time computer programming.

Yeah but in life you have to work, thats the sacrifice, I worked some shit jobs in the past and doing maths,science, programming etc well might not be interesting my life before wasn't interesting whilst I was working. I prefer working on things that lead to more interesting areas despite the actual work sometimes being pretty boring but hey thats life we all have to work.

So here's a really big problem: I love this video. I honestly think this was one of the most helpful things to see in my current life. I might even post an Instagram story about this. But your voice is being silenced by the algorithm. If you weren't verified, god I woud have never seen this! On my other account, I usually get videos from channels that are very very obscure and you've kind of plopped off my recommended feed (even though I'm trying to teach the algorithm I'm more interested in education, philosophy, sociology, and beyond). I don't know if anyone else has this problem but I'm considering making a new account to feed it new data just so I get to see more of content like this. Anyways, have a great day and thank you~

@jay I've spent lots of time on KZfaq and watched a lot of content. To me, I know this kind of content is out there. Most of those hours of content actually come from videos in India or elsewhere, videos typically not found on my feed. Maybe if you don't get what I mean, try navigating youtube's current search system.

Awesome discussion, I've often though what my alternate would be like, if I pursued a BS in Physics as undergrad (it might have taken me longer, but I think I'd (-eventually-) pick up the very minimum math skill set to finish such a degree). I struggled with similar question when I was 12 years old, "what is my favorite animal?" Framing the question like that, one assumes that there IS in fact a favorite animal. Or if someone asks "What is your passion?", then you assume that yes, you must objectively have one. But I agree with your comments, Tibees.

passion is a venn diagram. the only ones who have a very well defined passion are Asperger's, it is obviously not the majority of the population.

What an interesting video! It surprised me how much alike we are! I'm very self-driven and independent, I'm always starting little projects for fun and I can find a wide range of subjects and activities interesting. I disagree tough when you say you are not gifted, you clearly have been gifted with an amazing intellect, you are extremely intelligent! And I'm sure the reason you could choose between a wide range of interests and still overachieve is because of it. In some sense that is a sort of a "destiny", you pick and choose the activities that fits you personally, which because of your intelligence happens to be intellectually stimulating activities. And I think you may still find your passion, because I did! After many years "drifting" I think I found something that speaks to me a bit deeper, so you may find it too! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I have a multitude of passions. I've just always found many things fascinating, and I take the time to develop an understanding and a skillset around these subjects. It's exactly the way you put it: Nobody hands it to you, you just stumble upon it and explore until it becomes a part of you.

My favorite among the uploads from this channel. I originally was very passionate about biotechnology research but had to give up on that path due to some circumstances. Now i'm a professional game developer & i feel that i'm doing fine but i wasn't sure why i was feeling that way despite having to give up on my childhood dream of working on life extension research. Now i know. Thanks Toby!

I completely agree that trying, failing and trying again at new things is the road to find your true interests. And if you know your strenghts and use it on those interests, you can become very good at the thing you are interested in. No need to be the best at something to feel successful either!

Hello Tibees.. i graduated this year with a Bs in physics... I love your videos. You are so realistic. There are so many things that we are told are prerequisite so we can be a part of "physics"..like we have to be obsessed or physics should be all our life and not have any other interests. I also have interest in psychology, philosophy and also neuroscience so... I just want to thank you so much :) and I love the way you present your content. You are not "trying too hard to sound a certain way" you are just easy going and you are you, Authentic, and that is beautiful.

You’re so right! I’ve always been torn between biology and mathematics and really it’s just about finding which you enjoy most, not being the best. Because I know people that have phds but they’re still miserable

You are so Spot-on! I don't think your friend understood the meaning of passion. Maybe she was just trying to be supportive of you. Passion isn't only about finding your dream career. It's about being passionate about ANYTHING!!! I'm passionate about eating a Peach, riding my motorcycle, designing something. But - You really do have a good head on your shoulders. Good for you! You're passionate! And - you communicate very well!

I really needed this at this point in time. I recently chose to switch my major to mathematics and while it was originally a practical choice, I’ve been pondering what makes me stick with it now that I’m moving away from statistics. I can’t say I have a passion for it. I don’t have ideas about what to do with it that could have a huge positive impact on the world. It’s just something I find interesting and relatively easy to focus on. I’ve been completely throwing myself into this new field and I don’t know why. I just know there are worse reasons to do something than the fact that I enjoy it.
