After 6 years in the post office 3 years as CCA, 6 months as a PTF, and the rest as a regular I saw it was a dead end job. No career advancement after being a regular no additional or continuing training. Even as a regular I was force to work 6 days a week on a regular basis. Trying to take AL after working so much they treat you like you are committing a crime. Management is absolutely terrible. They are so incompetent most do not have neither the education or temperament to deal with employees. Injuries after injuries with no time to recover and they make every attempt to deny workers compensation even after suffering multiple herniated disks in my back. I could go on and on and in 2023, the money even as a regular is pretty low. It take 13.5 years to get to the maximum pay salary which really is not much for the time in service it takes to get there. I would not recommend the post office for anyone.

Did you apply for any career positions during that time?
@DrJhengsman
@DrJhengsman 8 ай бұрын
It doesn't work like that. Almost all start as a second tier sub and by seniority when the next career position opens up in that specific district the senior sub moves up to the career position. if he is a PSE, for city carriers CCAs are capped at a couple of years now and they move up to "career" PTF if no regular routes are available., Now there are 40 some districts, at my last count, that proved so hard to staff that city carriers start as "career" in the PTF position. And others where the attrition is so high CCAs are maximized to career regulars shortly after finishing probation@@Hawaii77

@@Hawaii77 Yes, many times and I was never selected. In my office they never let carriers go for details or move up only clerks were selected. I tried to transfer to stations nearby in the city but because I was so low on the seniority I was never selected(I was a carrier in Florida). The union told me you needed around 10-15 years as a regular to have a shot for a transfer. I wasn’t going to wait that long. People selected for the internal jobs were never all that qualified. I was the only individual in my office with formal education. I have a BA in public administration and a masters in public administration with a specialization in financial management. I’m a army combat veteran as well. 6 years active 4 years in the guard. Throughout my time especially when covid hit I notice the massive changes which were not for the better. Anyone had over 20 years started retiring in waves. They burned CCAs RCAs ARCs and PSES so fast there was always a shortage. Regulars working 6 days a week and then forcing regulars to work Amazon Sundays when we had only 1 CCA got old fast. It didn’t matter if you were on the overtime list or not. They just used office seniority list when no one was on the overtime list. At one point they were even trying to force regulars to work at different offices because there was a shortage of CCAs (2021-2022). I left USPS September 2023. Around May 2023 throughout the summer of 2023 there was a 180 as far as work. Package volume is high but mail volume dropped so low. They hired so many CCAs that most only worked for 4 hours per day if they were scheduled to work. It was a revolving door people hiring and quitting. Some CCAs got only 6 hours a week of work. Regulars were offered case a go to give CCAs work. Even if a regulars wanted to work you would finished your route early less then 8 hours. If you finished early you had to use AL no LWOP was allowed so people started burning AL quickly. You couldn’t slow down to make your 8hrs since they were tracking us through the scanners and people were being written up for excessive stops, leaving route for lunch, some times even for leaving routes for a bathroom break. Management never got better and the union was a joke. Sure you file grievances and maybe you get paid a little money for the violation of the contract but no one ever was held accountable or punished. Management knows they can break the rules with perpetuity and face no back lash for several weeks or months so they system specifically allows for the abuse to continue. The local IG in the region I was in was at is a joke too. I have seen so many violations of law, rules of employment to last a lifetime. I tell everyone find anything else there are so many other places to work that are not the USPS.

On the flip side. Physically speaking this job can be a life safer. I have a bachelors degree worked a desk job for over 12 years. In those 12 years i gained over 60lbs and was not healthy at all. With covid most of my previous counterparts work from home and gained more weight; not getting enough physical activity. I’ve been with USPS for 5 years; yes it was tough yes it is a physically demanding job but of you change your diet and develop good sleeping habits you will get healthier. I have lost over 70lbs I’m in the process of a complete body transformation going from 250lbs to 169lbs. I started lifting weights. Great video. As a new RCA I'll say this the work load is ridiculous. It is a physically and mentally taxing day of work. The night before I have anxiety about having to deliver the mail, I don't sleep well and the day of by the end of the shift I'm spent. I get no breaks, no lunch, I don't drink water because of the lack of bathrooms and when I get home my day is shot. I'm usually ready to go to bed by 6PM. Also, the mistakes are brutal. A bad scan and you have to drive back out and scan a label by the mail box. I swear I scan those things and they don't take for some reason. My thoughts are for the amount of work you'll do on this job spend that energy finding a much more rewarding and lucrative career with better work life balance.
@Theangrymailman
@Theangrymailman 7 ай бұрын
Here is some advice. You should ALWAYS take your breaks and Lunch. You’re letting them push you around too much and that will make you miserable. As far as a label goes, after you scan it check package look ahead on your scanner to see if it cleared.

UNION protects bad mail carriers and bad management/postmasters. What you say is true about the schedule as well. I worked 6 months and never once was told if I would or wouldn't work the next day, had to wait on the call. Unacceptable to do to a person in their midlife. USPS has turned into a joke. A bunch of incompetent supervisors that act like children. CCAs are worked 7 days a week 12-14 hours a day. They expect you to be a hero for McDonald’s pay. I have seen a Career Carrier come back early from back surgery just for them to follow him on his route and tell him he is going to slow. They would purposely give him heavy packages from other routes as “pieces” and the Union shop steward wouldn’t do anything to help him. He landed up retiring early because of the constant harassment. I wouldn’t recommend anyone become a carrier unless they are single have no kids and are ok with 20 years of harassment.

I quit as a cca after a year and have no regrets. #1, it's a dangerous job! I'm 5'2 female and got chased by big dogs like German shepherds and other big dogs. Also coming across a fully naked man in walking relay! Dangerous delivery in ghetto neighborhoods. Honestly i was very aware of my surroundings and was always scared someone could kill me or rob me.I've tripped multiple times and almost would hurt myself at times. Very dangerous job. Also working 6 days a week 12 hr days, wtf!! Had no time to hang with my fiance. Would be too tired to do chores because I was so physically drained doing these 10-15 mile walking routes. No freedom what so ever.

Another thing no tapped on that i will touch from the rca side of things. RCA's are expected to deliver out of their own car which means you will be putting damage on your car to do the job. I did the math on my end and I was spending 58% of my netpay buying/fixing stuff on my car to just do the job. Its not like its highway miles either, there was roughly 800 boxes per route at my station so your breaking to a stop at least 400-500 times a day minimum. Rural craft chews cars for breakfest. You are expected to find a mechanic/fix it yourself too and in my experience, the money they pay you for miles will not cover the cost for repairs so you lose money. Odds are at least one rural carrier will be out a vehicle half of the time, so half of the time your running that downed route. Combine all this stuff happening to your personal car and you have a recipe for high turnover rate, no call no shows, and rage quits. Another thing is since you are likely doing it out of a right side vehicle, you will have to rip the console out of your car or spent 1-3k on a conversion kit. I choose the rip the console out method which is cheapest but this results in you riding around from speeds 0-80 without a seatbelt, meaning a crash is likely a hospitilization/death sentence. Just crashing from 25-0 is going to result in a bad injury if you aren't strapped in. I ended up getting a strain injury from having to sit in the middle as well. [RANT TIME]The thing that made me throw in the towel was I swerved hard due to a guy attempting a pass on a blind turn. I swerved off the road/back onto avoiding death but I hit a bump and my axel shattered. I had to handle towing/getting the mail to the station by nyself, spent 5 hours waiting on a LLV to finish the route, multiple rca's coming back in the process and getting sent home. Meanwhile I got yelled at by a supervisor for not securing the mail dispite it being in a fenced in facility when the weather was 100 outside and me watching it from the break room window. I got back onto the roads to finish half the route at 4 but was expected to be back at 7 when I had 550 boxes left on my route + a loop from another rural carrier who had also broken down. I had one rca to help me and he blew me off entirely, leaving around 5pm that day but I somehow finshed all my mail and returned at 6:55. Almost dying in a head on colision with no seatbelt, shatrering my axel on my personal car costing 1.2k in repairs, getting no help from management for a tow/help from other carriers, and being expected to run a loop/over half my route in less than 3 hours when I had ups orientation around the corner? That was the straw that broke my back. The worst part about my story is its not even uncommon, ask ANYONE who has worked for usps for more than a year, they will have multiple stories just like it

*if you make it to regular* I used to think that it gets better, but at least where I’ve been working in TX, regulars who are not on the overtime list are still being mandated 60 hours. One of which is within the top 5 of seniority. I know it depends on your office. But I’ve now worked at three offices as a CCA in mid-to-large cities, and I no longer believe that mgmt is doing anything to get the non-overtime regulars back down to 40 hours. This is what makes me think of quitting weekly now after a year and a half as a CCA - I was willing to work 65 hours for two years (or a little more) to reap the benefits of career, but everywhere I turn career employees are working almost as much as CCAs. Sucks.

I live and work as a regular city carrier in Spokane WA, It was like that till Amazon started delivering their own shit. Now the ODL fights for it and I've only been mandatory overtimed once because there were 7 calls outs in one day, which never happens. 2020- April 2023 was absolute hell though with constant forced overtime and delivering 200-300+ packages a day.

In Austin TX where I worked as a CCA last year, Amazon has an enormous distribution center. There would sometimes be an Amazon van, a UPS truck, and myself parked up against one another delivering to the same address! Still did routes with 200+ packages daily. I imagine this is common in large cities where young highly paid white collar workers reside, and highly dependent on where your office is located

It was the gross mismanagement of the pay for rural carriers that also caused me to quit. I had no problem filing grievances.
