In Nepal, over a million young children are working, many in brick factories. 11-year-old Arvind has been working for the past three years making around $1.75 a day.
The law strictly prohibits the employment of children under the age of 14, and is a crime punishable by a year of imprisonment and a fine. Yet around 10 percent of the workers in brick factories are underaged.
VICE World News Sahar Zand speaks with child laborers, their parents, and a factory owner to find out why these children are working.

Such a rough life. When the mother is asked if she went to school she replied, "No. Because we are uneducated, we are nothing." That hits hard. I don't think I've ever cried at a VICE News video, but I came close with this one. Seeing how all the formerly (basically enslaved) children rejoiced at getting an education truly made my heart warm. My heart goes out to Arvind, and all the other Nepali children who have been forced into this disturbing lifestyle by their parents. May they all have access to education.
@Wasserkaktus

Child Labor technically isn't Slavery, but it's close. The main problem is the fact that Varna is clearly still very strongly practiced in Nepal (hence why Dalits are seen as "worthless"), plus the fact that extremely cheap, unskilled labor without any industrial health or safety regulations is more profitable for businesses here compared to more automation and skilled labor.

Banning child labor places focus on the symptom rather than the problem, which is poverty. The children have to work in order to survive, unfortunately. Other measures need to be taken with welfare, social support, etc. like what is being done by this amazing charity. Fantastic work!
@lguevara7865
@lguevara7865 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Also, we’re watching this doc thru the eyes of westerner’s. Working as a child is not uncommon in a lot of places including the US speaking from experience. As a child, you don’t see it as forced. You see it as something normal, that you have to do to support the family. Blaming the parents is not fair. Like you said, the problem is poverty. Getting the children to stop working there doesn’t fix the problem. In some cases, it can make it worse for the children and family.

5:14 seeing the 6y old working on bricks brought be to tears. it's crazy how we take things like food, clean water and education for granted to the point where we forget that people like this exist, people who are at the very bottom of society, alive.. and that's it. I wish I can do more to help than just make a comment.. whenever something bad happens to you in life, no matter how awful or heartbreaking it may be, remember that your feeling are valid and you don't necessarily deserve any of that, but also remember that it could've been worse, much much worse. and appreciate your life, and the privileges you have.

Most do not even think about it because they have and have had a pretty easy life ever since they were kids and think everyone does and should live like that. The reality of it is that for every person that has a relatively easy life, there are a dozen or more people that work very hard to provide things for those that have it easy yet still struggle to put food on their own table. Realisically, we can not all have an easy life, one that many americans and europeans are used to. But that does not mean that so many should struggle.

This just brought me to tears for so long in between the video . The way Vice works making a change is just spectacular . I jus was going through random content scrolling through and came to this not knowing you have uncovered this horror of my own country . I am from the capital watching this and finding myself so incompetent , looser , lazy , jus filled with shi*ty excuse living the pathetic life even at early 20's and here are these children sacrificing their future for such low wages for their brutal contribution . This will be pong if i started writing all what's in my heart so i will jus conclude by saying God bless you the girl , cameraman and whole team of Vice . Jus because of guys coming out of blue I hope some impact and change in course of how things were running has happened . And their life has changed for good . Our country leaders and whole government is jus shameful . The way you eat in Arvinds house seeing that family smiling with hope of positivity or with nothing except for treating guest in greatest regard amid their struggle was just so moving .

I just cant hold back my tears all throughout the video since my childhood was absolutely traumatic and I had somewhat similar experience. I have to work afterschool when I was young cause I grew up without my parents. Fought so hard to finish my education and now I`m still working so hard around 12 hours everyday but it pays off since the salary is more than enough even if I splurge on things that are unnecessary. Thank you Vice for reminding everyone that regardless of what we are going through there are a lot of people that are experiencing things much worse than our current experience which makes us appreciate life even more cause we tend to get agitated even in minor inconveniences. I will be going back to school again soon to further my education and will eventually help these kind of movement to help eradicate these kinds of practices and to really help social mobility.

Some people have it harder than others. We should always appreciate this and meditate on our own luck when we feel like life has done hard by us. Chances are it's nothing when compared to stories like this. My first job was at around 14. Cutting wood in the forest, knee deep in snow with an old Soviet chainsaw called _'Friendship'_ which was almost as big as me. Proper kolhoz (farmer collective) name. Then I came to the west and kids my age were being driven everywhere, bought computer games and toys and seen on hand and foot by their parents. This was when I realised something. Just how correct William Blake was... _'Some are born to sweet delight and some are born to endless night'._ Always be grateful you were born to sweet delight. Because chances are, you will need to remind yourself how lucky you are in order to stay grounded in life.

I think the idea would be to try to make the world a better place overall and make it impossible for these kind of places to exist, not to repress and hide your negative emotions and struggles just because some people have it worse. You seem to have misunderstood my point. I am not talking about repressing any negative emotions or not allowing yourself to recognise that you are having a hard time. The only thing which touches on what I was actually talking about is your initial suggestion that we build a utopia. Which is nice. I believe you should lead the way. Everybody else will be right behind you. But until we do, I am suggesting that those who have it better than others reflect on how lucky they are compared to said others when they feel like life is punishing them. Because there's always somebody who has it much worse and really puts our hardship into a completely different perspective. Suddenly it doesn't seem so hard anymore. It's about creating a perspective which puts us side by side with other human beings.

@@brett4264 maybe you should work with them, see how happy you'll be. seeing them smiling doesn't mean their "happy". if I was born into making bricks, not knowing anything outside of that, and not knowing that life has more joy to it, I might be "happy" but that doesn't mean that I should work there, I'd simply think that that's all there is to life

@ViceMagazine, I’m so pleased to see that you’ve *finally* reported on this heinous, inhumane issue - but also hope and suggest you will, please, report on the *continuous generations* of *ENSLAVED families* of brick makers *in India.* Because the men don’t give a damn and *choose to perpetuate the bloody misery by continuing to impregnate their wives, the cycle never ends* as the children are forced to work at brick making from as early as the age of five to pay off bogus ‘debts’ to the bossman (‘Massa!’) (the same age I was also forced to begin working, in my case it was the construction industry). *Please consider it. They need exposure and assistance!* *Thank you* from a very long-time reader and screener.🌞

Frankly, I hope there comes a time when there are no charities at all... a day when there is no need for charity because the government does it's job free from greedy crime lords posing as democratic public servants just to use the power to horde more money. Charity is so loving to see but it's only a necessity when the structures that do that job don't work. Democratic local government is meant to be "the charity." It's meant to find those in need and distributes its resources.
