Here are some beginner building tips, tricks, and secrets that helped me learn how to properly build, landscape, and roof lots in the Sims 4!
Hopefully, these tips will help you stop your builds from looking amateur or ugly! Again, these aren't tips for people who are already good at building. It's meant to teach you about things like porches, styles, and variation in builds!
And if you're here for the amazing song at the end 'I'd Much Rather Die,' then you've come to the right place. Sorry to Deligracy and Lilsimsie for putting you in my bop.

Alot of times they also keep it very simple and empty so everyone can use it, also the people with the minimum system requirements.

I recently watched a lilsimsie roofing tutorial, and after 9 years of playing the Sims 4, that roofing tutorial taught me, that if you select a roof piece, hold shift, and then drag on one of those little arrow to adjust overhang, it'll adjust only that particular side

Hilarious, yet helpful! Roofs are hard, but I'd rather do it myself than have auto roof. There are so many options to roofing and I feel accomplished when I manage to do it well. Using floorplans can be helpful, but you have to keep in mind that Sims 4 is not to scale, so you have to be ok with knowing you can't match it exactly.

Another tip when you are a beginner with building (like me): if you don't live in the middle of nowhere or in a huge city with only skyscrapers, try looking around your own real neighborhood. I was just looking out of the window one time and realized that one of the houses looks kind of weird but that I really want to build it in The Sims. And then I did another one, that was just begging to be built. And if you can't see at all the parts of the house? Use Google maps and that yellow man and take a look through the eyes of Google. (And use satellite map or whatever it is called, you can see the details of the garden and maybe also the roof)

best advice I can give for exteriors is to look for real life references. Maybe browse through some historically listed houses near where you live and check the wiki pages for different architectural styles and terms. It becomes a lot easier once you can actually put words to the various bits and bobs that make a fancy house for you.
