Dude I know you recently lost your job but with your expertise and knowledge you should consider opening your own repair shop. With your reputation on KZfaq and a promising future of consumer electronics.... I don't think you'll have any problems getting business. Also your video editing, narration and general flow of your videos is top notch. Better than any tech repair I've seen. Keep up the good work. Also I am a miner and replaced some thermal pads on 30 series because memory was 100C+ under load. Better pads brought it to about 80C. But I also MEASURED the pads and used the right size for replacement 😂. Thank goodness people dont research so we have great content from you 😅

The amount of time it takes to do even a simple fix for pads is so much it's hard to justify opening business and not charge repair attempt fees and charge more for repair

@@northwestrepairto tag onto this, I'd open the business and charge the fees. The cost savings for the end user is worth the repair in most cases. Working on other consumer electronics is also a possibility as well to supplement things.

@@northwestrepair Thanks for the reply. I understand it is not easy and requires time in addition to risk. Just my opinion from the outside looking in, you know your shit. Not if but WHEN another GPU shortage hits, either because of a crypto or AI boom, people will pay what the GPU is worth to have it repaired. Not speculation, actually happened with the last mining boom. GPU's are becoming less luxury and more essential with corporations buying them and AI cloud computing right on the horizon. When there is a GPU shortage, there will also be a technician shortage.

XFX is indeed on the cheaper side of the manufacturers. I had the opportunity to play with an older chip (HD 6850) from both XFX and Sapphire. XFX had a joke of a cooler, Sapphire had a good sized fin stack. XFX ran 7C hotter. Not enough to kill the GPU, but enough to warrant the cheaper cooler - at least to XFX.

XFX used to be good, but man oh man they have really gone down hill, and it started a long time ago too. I definitely don't trust them, but I think some of their cards are still good, just depends on the model. It's not good to blindly trust any brand, even the most reputable ones. It's always best to check independent reviews for the exact model of a graphics card before buying it.

all it needs is its dual fan power lines split, with only one going to the gpu as well as rethermal pad and a fan on the thermal pad area of the backplate. i use a molex to 12v for one of the fans and the third fan is on chassis jumpers. it took me 4 years to figure out how to get the gpu not to crash, and even run it stable with 1354mhz overclock (sapphire rx570 8gb). i also made a video about it showing my modifications which are very crude but effective.

I have 2 laptops, one is about 21 years old and the other is 8. Both appear to have the same issue, when switched on they make very loud noise which I assume can only come from the fans somewhere inside. I am not a repair guy and I have no money to send the laptops to someone for repairs. I am guessing I might have to find replacement fans for them and perhaps replace any thermal pads. Any idea where one guy could find them online? The older laptop is a Compaq and the newer one is a XMG.

I just had a fairly new Pc built last year but had NOT actually used ( only powered up to load music production software ) until yesterday [ 20/04/24 ] while I was playing back some music I had created. I paused and went into KZfaq for musical help, found a useful vid then saw another and went to click on it. The second I did this the video froze then screen went entirely green then blackout. My led keyboard and Mouse did the same, so I waited a min or 2 and nothing. So I pressed the reset button hoping it was just a glitch, my led keyboard/mouse lit up but... not my screen. I swapped hdmi cables, tried on different screens, checked if cables were inserted correctly and still nothing. Is this a sign of a dead GPU ( radeon RX6600 ) or should I take to a Repair store BEFORE I decide to smash this Tower up?

From what i heard, the 5700XT XFX cards had some pretty poor coolers, + it may also be a lowend card, but i would love to see a disasample of something like a higher end 6800/6800XT/6950XT card, to see if XFX´s higher end cards are good or bad quality whise.
@syncmonism
@syncmonism Жыл бұрын
That sounds familiar. I think most of the 5700 XT cards had perfectly good coolers though. I definitely remember researching them when helping a friend to build a computer. I remember that the Sapphire Pulse and Powercolor Red Dragon were both definitely good models, offering an excellent balance between price and quality, with the Pulse being probably the best version of the 5700 XT in terms of value per dollar, but with many other cards not far behind it. The cheapest Powercolor model was pretty crappy though. It's sad when the worst models are often only about 10 or 20 bucks cheaper, but significantly worse. However, prices can fluctuate a lot, so never assume that a more expensive card is actually better. Also, it's never good to blindly trust even the most reputable brands, and even the worst brands can sometimes make good versions of a card. Also, a model with a major flaw does sometimes get a revision which fixes the flaw. It's always best to find a good review of the exact model of card, to verify if it's worth what it's priced at, before buying, if at all possible.

navi 10 gpu's just always have high hotspot. Undervolting doesnt help either since amd cards aggressively push clocks up to the maximum power envelope or thermal envelope. Only way to save temperatures is louder fans or lower power limit. The 5600 XT cards also use navi 10 but they also typically have a much lower power enelope so hotspots always seem to be MUCH lower than their 5700[xt] counterparts.

I bought the Gelid Extreme 1.0mm pads for my 580 Nitro+ as I learned that the Extreme is squishy enough not to cause a no contact issue. Just do NOT use the Ultimate 1.0 as it is way too hard and WILL cause a no contact, overheating issue! I actually haven't tried them yet as the card seemed to run fine yet and I temporarily put it in storage anyway for now. Funny how Sapphire recommends using 1.0mm pads if you can't find the .75mm ones...and who can...but they forget to mention to make sure that they are squishy enough to compress correctly!

@@OcDmn The hard ones (sounds "dirty" ...LOL!) will prevent the core from making proper contact with the heatsink. You need the squishy ones to be able to compress enough so that the two make proper contact. I guess it is best to test it first by adding some thermal paste to the GPU, screwing it down properly, and then taking it all apart again to see if the paste got properly compressed. It does waste paste but it is WAY cheaper than needing to buy a new graphics card and you could always try it with a cheaper paste first, if you have it on hand, and THEN use the good stuff when you know it compresses properly.👍👍

the gpu ran at 61,the hotspot is 90.the fan curve is set depending to the gpu temp not the hotspot,still 90 with new thermal paste is worrying

I have a Zotac RTX 2070 Super Twin fan which has the same issues, gpu temps are decent but the memory and hotspot temps can get too hot too fast even after changing the thermal pads. This is so very frustrating.

Undervolt it with MSI Afterburner curve adjuster. Ez to do and effective.

thermal design isn't that great if thats the case. but then again, zotac is one of those brands that offer cheap cards so i don't think they'll do a good job at designing their cards anyway.

Zotac has terrible design choices in general, probably a terrible heatsink

I bought a cheap msi 6700xt that had consistent crash at red dead redemption 2 benckmark, in swamp area, while the old 5700xt showed super stable for years. No instability in other games, glad it showed at all, ive returned it. Now running a rock solid 6800 but living in third world countries while trying to build and keep a decent gaming pc is a hazardous endeavour.

next time, use a water sand paper, on the cooler where it makes contact with the core. Cooper oxidizes preety quickly. I had an old msi, that went from ~90º to 60 from that same scenario after making cooper "shiny" /clean again.

I have vega56 that doesnt work. When bootin up the pc, the card powers up aggressively spinning fans for a while then it just lights up but doesnt show up or give any video. Any ideas what might be wrong? Is it possible to ship oversees for you to look at?

After viewing quite a few of your vids, I never get tired of watching real pros (like you, KrisFix.Germany, etc.) doing real pro work. Besides the electrical knowledge, the dexterity is astounding. Flipping a couple old jokes, in your case it actually is rocket science AND brain surgery! Expertly done good sir, expertly done!

What GPU would you recommend because I'm in dead end. A 4070 ti or 7900 xt and what brand to choose. Your opinion will matter the most

I have two 970's and both gets blackscreen in windows sometimes at 10 Seconds sometimes 10 minutes . Thermalpads and paste changed. The one gets after 15 seconds in furmark 720p a orange screen and pc reboots and the other gets a grey screen in furmark. Updated the bios and the drivers but didnt help PSU is good, and pcb looks good also. What can be the problem? (No artifacts) When i get blackscreen in windows the PC doesnt restart

The 5700XT Thicc II was replaced with the Thicc III. I own the Thicc III and the thermal issue was solved. I still do not think the Memory controller was up to par. The XFX 7900XTX is a really good card. They learned a big lesson on that Thicc II card.

I have exactly this gpu and i payed 100 bucks less then the rest of the 5700xt at launch so the build quality should be excused as it still runs fine

If I open a card up for repasting I just try to save the original thermal pads so this isn’t an issue.

Some dude at even said it wouldn't matter what size pad you put in a gpu because it'd just squish itself into place but he also told me the right size for the 1070 ti I was calling about i didn't listed to the first part of his advice i mentioned above because in my mind exactly what happened when he opened it the first time came to mind

Inbetween repairs you could make some tutorials on how to properly re-apply thermal paste to GPUs, add some pads and clean the GPU safely.
