This described my iron shots to a tee. I started playing again after a 15 year hiatus and have been incredibly frustrated by my lost/inconsistent distance e.g. 10+ yards off my 7-iron and this is with newer clubs and balls. I went out to play after watching this and on the 1st hole I had 196 to the pin and was expecting a "lay-up" with my 4-iron...I tried your suggestion and knocked it 10 feet from the pin. I kept at it and had the best round since my prime (a 75 which would have been 72 except for 2 iron shots where I fell back on my old swing). I even started doing it with my driver and 3-wood and got back to my long hitting days. Thank you.

Excellent video, Chris. I must definitely try this on the range ASAP as I am struggling badly enough from this strike defect. Just saying, Mark Crossfield also has a good older instruction video with another drill, but basically the same message of needing to reduce dynamic loft presented at impact.

great video as a noticed with trackman a few of my clubs i was experiencing this issue. I hit a few shanks as well so the open club face could be the issue. i'm going to check my grip pressure, ball position and club face next time to get a good consistent angle of attack for optimum ball flight. ill record as well to see differences between clubs im flighting well and the ones im not.

I've only really come back to dedicated golf in the past couple of months -- was a reasonable golfer as a kid but had over 25 years playing maybe once or twice in total. I've noticed excessive height in recent weeks -- straight flight, and only really "bruise" the grass blades on full shots, and losing quite a bit of expected distance as the ball balloons somewhat (while my swing thought is about exploding my lead shoulder through the shot). Doesn't happen as much with my driver, but certainly my irons. Looking forward to putting this into play at the range later today.

Great lesson using new technology to prove/show very old common problem. I like the teaching aid to exaggerate the closed face, on the down swing. I have been practicing with my lie angle at set up…slightly closed, but after watching this video, I realize that my approach is working on short 1/2 swings, as I am compensated, but it is not helping when I need it. 180 yard carry with a 25 yard ravine in front of the green. 😀. I also feel that my downforce strike is not vertical to my target line it….It more of a push out…which might, be perception…..as I am trying to prevent the dreaded low left screamer…. One other question about hitting off a mat, is there a trick to know you are getting a good divot, without the use of technology? My carry distance on a mat always seems 10% longer than it is on the course. The good news is that it is always a great confidence builder going to the first tee.😀😀. Have fun play golf!

I got something going on, short irons I’ll carry great here lately I have to open my body way up line up behind the ball then preset some weight on the lead side. I been hitting pw 130-135, I’d normally hit 120 with a 20 yard push before. Now I have about a slight 5 yard pull. I put the ball on the right hand side of the tee box and I’m dead on. I begin to believe the lessons and videos work but some people need different body positions to get there. I’ve went from about a 30 handicap to just dropped to 13 yesterday. Because I’m not doubling and tripling par 3s. Par 3s we’re my bugaboo

HI Chris.. I have always hit a high ball but I thought it was because the ball was forward in my stance and my swing thought was low to high. However lately I have been concentrating on the Hogan flat wrist "supinate" delivery and the height is way down. Having my watch face pointing to the ground or forward at impact.

This is me for sure. 4 - 230, 5 - 210, 6, - 190, 7 - 175, 8 - 160, 9 - 145, P - 130 and I routinely hear “I’ve never seen loft like that” which looks/feels good, but I rarely take a divot in front of the ball. Un-good 😬 I want to try your “face down at parallel” technique, but not gonna lie … I’m a bit concerned about massively over-thinking an adjustment that’s quite literally in the middle of my swing. I’ll give ‘er a shot mate … 🤞

How do you fix this with hybrid irons and fairway woods? I hit ALL of my balls extremely high, straight and far. I can hit my 3W about 280 yds but average about 265 yds all while hitting over very tall cottonwood trees. I can leave a ball mark that utterly destroys the green with any and all clubs in my bag. My PW goes about 95-120 yds, my 9i 115-140 yds, 8i 135-160 yds, 7i 155-180 yds, 6i 175-200 yds, 5i 195-215 yds, 4i 210-220 yds, 3i 215-235 yds, 5w 240-260 yds, 3w 255-280 yds. I never attempt full swings with my GW, SW or LW as they are used situationally around the green only about 60 yards and in. My handicap is 11.2.

I have a high ball flight, and i do lose distance because of it, but i dont see it as an issue. My irons are accurate and consistent. So i take a 7i from 155yards instead of a 9iron, ive still got a club to hit full power from 220y down to 70yards, biggest distance gap being 3w to 3i hybrid, (230-200) and i also have good control of the shape left/right - so is this something i should be looking to change, just to gain distance?
@georgefettersjr.2238
@georgefettersjr.2238 Жыл бұрын
I don't think you'd want to lessen consistency with this move, and if you can't flight the ball lower without degrading consistency, this technique might not be for you. Advantages to lower and longer flight include: less effect by wind, less spin (if you're maintaining adequate spin to hold greens), and a shorter club to achieve the same yardage. All else remaining equal, you should be more accurate with a shorter iron vs a longer one. Me, I have way too much dynamic loft delivered to the ball, which causes my flight to balloon and get affected more by wind, my spin to be too high, and my distance to suffer. So I'm interested in trying this technique.

Hi Chris, I have some questions regarding hand pressure on the club. How tightly should the club be held and which parts of the hand have the most tightness? Should the trail or leading hand have more tightness? Should the thumb and forefinger of the trail hand be the main culprit for clubhead speed through wrist rotation? Your videos are amazingly helpful! Cheers, Jeremy

I hit the ball high with a slight draw for example a 7 iron goes 165, should I be looking to lower my ball flight? will this add more penetrating distance? i was lead to believe that height is a good thing
@ChrisRyanGolf

Everyone has their optimum launch angle, spin and height for each shot, so really just depends on how close you are to that, 165 with a 7 is pretty good so I’d guess that your flight is ok 👍

What is too high for your average weekend golfer? According to Trackman tour stats, the tour average for almost every club shows a peak height of close to 30 yards (roughly a 9 story building), which for me is a towering height. I have a much slower club head speed, which should mean the ball doesn't reach those same heights. As an example, a pitching wedge peaking at around 20 yards at a driving range using range balls is only 2/3 height of the tour average, but seems too high to me.
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 6 жыл бұрын
Hi John, yes this will depend on club speed. If your club speed is lower than the average tour player then those stats won’t really mean too much. Your peak height will be lower as you say 👍👍
