I agree! I have been a powered pilot since 1988. I have been a hang glider pilot since 1993, paragliders pilot since 2000. A tandem pilot and an instructor. I have a piper cherokee but rarely fly it. Paragliding has taken me all over the world. I always bring my wing. It is my life's greatest joy!

I almost took you off my channel subscriptions. I thought you were done posting videos, favourite was the md80 on. Loved your new video, I wonder if anyone has ever tried to give the Christ the Redeemer statue a high five when soaring by it? Lol

Hey Kent, what happened to your aviation and cockpit videos? It's been a while since I've seen a video from your channel, but I remember your old videos fondly (used to help me take study breaks in between college exams). Also, why don't you write for gadling anymore?
@fly4fun
@fly4fun 8 жыл бұрын
insanomonkey Thanks Insanomonkey. I've been pretty immersed in paragliding lately. Other than those videos (that I usually put over on Vimeo), I haven't done any cockpit videos. I will probably do a 757/767 quirky tour like I did for the MD-80 soon though. Gadling has changed hands which worked out as a perfect time for me to go play more.

insanomonkey Same here. It would be great to get a Flight Crew perspective during the recording. On a side note, when does American plan to sunset the last of the MD-80's? I see a number of them ending up in Africa and India. With so many aircraft available for parts, I wouldn't be surprised if they flew another 20 to 30 years.

What happens when letting the handles go? And is there an emergency chute in the backpack?
@fly4fun
@fly4fun 8 жыл бұрын
+Bigalinjapan It's 'positively stable' so when you let go, the glider flies straight. There is also a reserve parachute.

why isn't paragliding popular in the US? it seems to be relatively more popular in Europe and South America. anyone know why?
@fly4fun
@fly4fun 6 жыл бұрын
tubewerk Good question. In Switzerland and France for example they have large population areas that are close to some amazing paragliding friendly mountains. That has led to more schools and more pilots. That might be part of it.

Aerodynamically a pod harness like the one at 5:53 makes no sense. The front covering the legs does very little to reduce the drag and similarly the too tiny cone in the back does nothing. Every aerodynamics textbook covers that - why do harness manufacturers even _bother_ making those duds? Great video otherwise! Interlaken and the surrounding areas is one of my addictions :-)

Windstop/thermal isolator for comfort, perhaps? Where I'm from most of the season will be 10*C or below. I fly gliders, and we usually end up with two or three layers of wool on us inside the cockpit early and late season, as that's winter time with temps far below freezing.
@upupandawaayyyyyyyy
@upupandawaayyyyyyyy 6 жыл бұрын
You are way off base with that assumption. Even the most minor of differences in these type of "pod" harnesses (from generation to generation and style changes in the shape of both the front pod and the rear fairing) show themselves in races. They are CAD designed and tested in wind tunnels. Real world results in paragliding races verify, and top pilots always know which harnesses are the most efficient/fastest. Again, your assumption couldn't be more wrong. Further, Eseem is correct as well, they add warmth and protection from wind.
